What happens if you change wheels and dont activate te TPMS?

I did search many threads, can not find a solid answer on this. I'm switching from the OEM z71 wheels to the trail boss wheels, I don't have the tpms acitivate tool yet but it's on order, ( 5 more days) I have the new wheels in the garage and want to put on. If I don't wait and don't activate the new sensors for a few days does anything bad happen like does the stabilatrac and ABS get deactivated? Is it ok to drive, should I wait?
I bought the recommended EL -50448 reset tool, just confirming that it should be able to learn the new wheel sensors or do I need to install the ones from the original z71 wheels to be safe?
thanks

yes, using the original z71's is a fall back option, so you don't think the new trail boss tpms will work once the tool arrives?

On that note I'm planning on ordering a set of falken at3w from discount tire direct. They have an optional TMPS kit for $30. Would it be best to include it in the purchase or should the shop be able to use the current ones during the swap?

yes, you can definitely use the originals, just pull them out and place n your new wheels, will need a refesh kit, runs like $7 per sensor for the stems, etc. it's programming new ones that are questionable. On one of the tpms threads, a member has 2 sets of wheels, summer/ winter and seems to be ok switching back and forth each season, just need to reprogram them each time as far as I know.

If you reuse the old sensors you wont get the TPMS light as all the sensors will be registered and communicating to the ECM but unless you pay exact attention to which one came from which corner the DIC will display the wrong pressures for the tire locations.

If you use new sensors they will obvious not be registered at all with the ECM and you will get the TPMS light until you use the tool to register them.

So in either case you will need the tool and continue to need the tool each time you rotate your tires.

Got it, thx for the clarification, tool should be here Thurs, I just needed some reassurance I don't mess anything else up.

That is my set current up.. 2 sets of rims, 2 sets of TPMS, + a stop off at my dealer to use the tool, so far they never charged me. (I might run a week or 2 with the light on before I have a chance to drop by the dealer)
I had the same set up on my 2010, but at least I didn't need the tool to reprogram my tire swap.
On my jeep, I have only 1 set of TPMS, so the idiot light flashes during the winter.

Thx for the info, I feel better now.. I'm putting the Trail Boss wheels on tomorrow, tool arrives Thurs hopefully but I'll try a stop at the dealer Monday to see if they would me out. Seems like a 5-10 minute project to program with the tool.

I'm 99.9% sure you need the relearn tool when you rotate tires.

So this is my first vehicle that displays tire pressure on the dash. It would seem completely ridiculous if the monitors didn't follow the tires upon rotation. East to test, but I'm sure someone can confirm before I drain a tire of air and move it around :p. If you have to reprogram the truck upon each rotation it would be so horrible. This can't be how it works.
The draining tire & airing it up does not work on the 2nd Gens, I've never heard of any monitors following the tires automatically upon rotation.

IMO your best bet is to buy a inexpensive tool if you change tires for the summer/winter, it's the price you have to pay to have all the "Cool features".

@Z71CYBER Did you purchase the Trailboss wheels off Craigslist? I saw it one day and it was no longer listed the next day lol. Nice set of wheels. Let's see them pics after you install them

Sadly, no one wants the 18's anymore, when i bought those early this year, it was in demand, now, not even 1 inquiry.

For the record - I was surprised by that information earlier but you guys are absolutely correct. You need the tool. It still seems like it would be easy enough to create a system that knew where each sensor was but I'll get over it I suppose!

I'm not going to edit my prior posts as it will chop up this whole thread and make it more confusing.

Carry on :wink2:

I just got new rims, tires and had new tpms installed so I wouldn't have to break the old ones out of the OEM rims. I have a oil change scheduled for Saturday and they should rotate and re-sync them when they are done. For now I get the little amber colored flat tire looking symbol all the time, and every time I start it up I have a warning in the DIC about TPMS needing service.

When I got the new rims installed, I had the old tires and rims still mounted but in the bed of the truck. I though my TPMS was working. It was reading them from the bed of the truck, it wasn't until I took them out that I realized I had been reading the wrong tires.
