What happens if you change wheels and dont activate te TPMS?

If you reuse the old sensors you wont get the TPMS light as all the sensors will be registered and communicating to the ECM but unless you pay exact attention to which one came from which corner the DIC will display the wrong pressures for the tire locations.

If you use new sensors they will obvious not be registered at all with the ECM and you will get the TPMS light until you use the tool to register them.

So in either case you will need the tool and continue to need the tool each time you rotate your tires.

For the record people, you won't need the tool when you rotate tires. The BCM sees when they're rotated.
So this is my first vehicle that displays tire pressure on the dash. It would seem completely ridiculous if the monitors didn't follow the tires upon rotation. East to test, but I'm sure someone can confirm before I drain a tire of air and move it around :p. If you have to reprogram the truck upon each rotation it would be so horrible. This can't be how it works.

"TPMS Sensor Matching Process
Each TPMS sensor has a unique identification code. The identification code needs to be matched to a new tire/wheel position after rotating the vehicle’s tires or replacing one or more of the TPMS sensors. Also, the TPMS sensor matching process should be performed after replacing a spare tire with a road tire containing the TPMS sensor. The malfunction light and the DIC message should go off at the next
ignition cycle. The sensors are matched to the tire/wheel positions, using a TPMS relearn tool, in the following order: driver side front tire, passenger side front tire, passenger side rear tire, and driver side rear. See your dealer for service or to purchase a relearn tool. A TPMS relearn tool can also be purchased. As much as I like the added tech I'm starting to dislike it more and more.
 
For the record - I was surprised by that information earlier but you guys are absolutely correct. You need the tool. It still seems like it would be easy enough to create a system that knew where each sensor was but I'll get over it I suppose! :laugh:
