What DON'T you like about Canyon/Colorado

Not to knock these trucks, but I wanted to list some of the things that I disliked about my '19 Canyon Denali, and had me looking to trade up to something else. I usually don't keep any vehicle very long, 2 to 3 years. I probably have had 40 different cars since my teens, at least a dozen brand new. "Variety is the spice of life", as they say. A truck with a bed is handy at times, but not really necessary for me. I have a utility trailer...here are my dislikes:

Transmission woes...I had it flushed at 150 miles, and still don't like how it shifts. For $40K its piss poor.
Crappy gas mileage.
B pillar noises, had tsb's done, tightened hinge bolts, tried other remedies, but still hear it, even in winter.
No keyless, what an annoyance having to mess with a dam key, pulling it and fob out of pocket all the time.
Running boards, best thing they do is keep the slush off the sides of the truck some. Stick out WAY too far.
Nearly no tech. Blind Spot warning at least would have been nice. It must suck if you have a cap on the box.
No left foot dead pedal. Instead a crooked floor there. At least it could be flat, or somehow built into a floormat.
No garage door opener.
Stupid oil filter and location of it, hard for most to do your own oil changes.
Crappy dim headlights.

And this was the supposed "upscale' Denali. The most thing Denali about it was the fancy chrome grille, and nice 20" wheels. This generation of these twins desperately needs a huge refresh, I guess it is coming, but if its only a 4 banger..

only a couple things come to mind with my 2018 denali diesel

-lack of any sort of dead pedal. coming from a "sporty-ish" car where you sit low and have a proper dead pedal, well for the longest time i didnt know what to do with my left foot.

-the running boards. im quite tall, dont use them to get in, and they are too far out and make exiting awkward. easy fix to get rid of them though.

-throttle response, or lack thereof. again, im used to more performance oriented cars with quick throttle response, so the diesel really feels like a slug. im getting used to it, but i know after driving my porsche once the weather gets nice im gonna be feeling how sluggish the truck is again. might be time for a pedal commander or something.

-dim headlights. was an easy fix though, and i actually really like the projectors and housings, just needed some decent bulbs

most things are a fairly simple fix, just dont know what to do about the awkward lack place for my left foot.

I too had the issue with my left foot and added a dead pedal and it made a huge difference. I made a post about it here: Dead pedal / footrest mod -$8 Tacoma part

Trans since a flush has been fine.
Gas millage depends on how I drive, around town it sucks but I have gotten 28+ on the highway.
B pillar has never said a thing to me.
Don't want nor need keyless.
Running boards, see keyless.
I have a neck and able to use it as God intended.
Never an issue for me.
My garage is full of motorcycles, the Harley got a custom opener I made up, I can stick the truck nose in but that's it.
Love the oil filter location, comes out clean, much better than the I5 that was always a mess.
I did upgrade the headlights to LEDs
I do hate the door pockets.

You know I am happy with what I have and if I get any new things to consider in the new model that is fine if not I like what I have.

May want to caution though use care on what you dream for as often there is a price or a price increase that comes with added content.

Quality issues expectations are legit but often the other complaints we see here are often just personal wish lists that if we had fine but they are not the end of the world.

I have seen many a vehicle they add more content to and the price wither goes up or the quality goes down. In some cases both.

I would love to see HUD, 360 Vision Camera and a Sun Roof but if I had to go out and buy today I would choose just what I have. The lack of these are not deal breakers in any way,.

I already have most of the features listed above on my SUV and they are ok but I really could care less if they were on my truck or not.

As for the Oil Filter I would not trade this one for the anything else. It is nice to be able to change it and not have oil running down my arm or burning my arm on a hot exhaust pipe.

I like automatic shifter on the steering column not on the center console where it takes up room.
Drivers cup holder is on the passenger side of the transmission shifter. Another reason why I don't like the shifter there,
The door pockets

Other than the above items I love my truck. (y)

Same with me, I test drove some diesels, wanted to like it, but not big enough for me.

The seats in base model suckkkkkkkkkk.
Had a rental for awhile, me or wife could not stand driving in town, and my weekly long drives sucked, power seats with lumbar and heat, they are much better, wish they where a hair softer.

Stock running boards can be very slick if even alittle moisture on them.

With projections, just change the bulbs away from halogen, and re adjust, they are factory adjusted as a truck, so are pointed lower, so if there is weight in bed, they are not to high, I carry a screwdriver in door, for quick adjustments.
Auto adjust headlights is what truck need, to auto adjust bed weight or trailer, keep headlights correct for safety, without constant adjust.

As much room is behind the plastic behind rear seat, they should have mailed a mold that gits closer, and could have had alot more storage.

I don't like the lack of electric locking tailgate on my 18 Z71, but I am taking care of fixing that with the 2020 parts as we speak. I would like a little more power and a little better shifting. I am thinking about getting a Trifecta tune. I wish they had a bench seat with a shifter on the column like my work Silverado. I wish we could get some of the features on the Holden HSV Sportscat, that looks awesome. I am glad it does not have all of the safety nannies. I don't care for keyless start or a sunroof and don't like adaptive cruise. The running boards are essential for my short wife.

Me, I prefer a sliding rear window, but no power???
Oil filter, be nice if the mold let it come up alitlle higher l, but definitely better than underneath l, course I crawl under anyway to drain, lifted, so do not need to jack up or drive on ramps.

Door pockets could be better.

Fenders alittle wider, for tire clearances.

Largely love the truck. However, useless door pockets, would prefer a column shifter or dial to free up space on center console especially relevant for a midsize truck, Z71 and up should be default LED bulbs and DRLs, no power sliding rear window. When you live with something for a while, you see were GM chose to cut corners. None are deal breakers, all would be nice for 3rd gen if Chevy is browsing :)

Lack of a manual transmission and 4:10 gears as options for the zr2. Would prefer less tech like an onstar delete option for example and to not have to read the nav screen to accept the terms and conditions while I'm driving. Little more padding in the front seats would be appreciated. Otherwise, it's a pretty good well rounded truck.

After more than 100,000 miles, about the only thing I don't like is the seats. Much too hard.

The other things you mentioned (except for the oil filter) I agree with. It would be nice to have those simple tech items, like push button start and door opener. But just nice to have.

Functionally, the truck is perfect for me.

Overall I like my Colorado, but in no particular order:
  • Pre DPF EGR means exhaust soot back into he motor and future decarbonization will be required (I have the diesel)
  • I wish all windows had express-up like Toyota has, instead of only the drivers window
  • I miss the no-touch unlock/entry like Toyota has, but I don't mind they key to turn it on
  • The A/C SMELLS for the first few minutes
  • No single button to COMPLETELY disable ALL the electronics for off-road driving. Traction control and stability features just make it easier to get stuck in soft sand
  • Door pockets don't hold much
  • Lack of storage space under/behind the back seats
  • No option for power rear center window
  • I prefer a manual transfer case, but I guess they're all automatic these days..
  • The rear defroster should not have broken so fast
  • Pedal lag that feels like turbo lag but isn't (I have the diesel)
  • Lack of protection under the truck. My old Tacoma TRD had rock guards covering everything under the truck; entire engine, TX case, even the fuel tank. My Chevy Z71 is basically fully exposed underneath
  • The fact that a bad emissions sensor can put the truck into limp mode essentially leaving you stranded

My list having only owned the truck for a month.
  1. Seats are a little hard
  2. Would have preferred a solid rear window (or a power option)
  3. Performance AT4 not available in Canada
  4. LED bulbs should be standard (inside and out)
  5. Lack of safety tech....I really miss the cross traffic alerts from my SUV
  6. There should be a tray in the center console from the factory
  7. Front air dam should be optional, especially for AT4 models
  8. No push button start
  9. Keyless entry
  10. Lack of colour options for models...esp the AT4.

  • Suspension a tad too stiff
  • No dead pedal
  • Oddly shaped door pockets that won’t hold anything of use
  • Not enough thigh bolstering
  • Needs more underseat storage
  • Dead spot in the throttle when accelerating from a stop
  • Not being able to use 7th and 8th gear in manual mode
  • The engine cover being integrated into the intake tube
  • Glitchy emergency braking and lane departure warning features

Though this looks like a lot, I actually REALLY like this truck. I’m just a detailed oriented person who is car/truck crazy and I obsess over the small stuff. I realized the other day that all of the vehicles I wish I still had were mid-size trucks, so it’s no wonder this one has been one of my favorites so far.

no bottle opener

If anyone can make that happen, you can!

  1. Location of the ignition key, my key chain hits my knee. Push button start would resolve but isn't needed. I'm experimenting with key chain solutions.
  2. Size/width of the shift lever (although easily fixed, which many have done with good instructions).
  3. Some weird radio bugs (radio audio turns on by itself without showing that it's on via the screen and I shut it all the way off prior).
  4. Cargo light doesn't turn on when opening tailgate or when interior lights go on and there's no button on the outside of the truck to enable it.
Overall I really like this truck! :)

The OP makes some good points. I have a 2018 Denali, and quite frankly, it is a poor excuse for a Denali, but I still love my truck. The reason I selected the Denali package was that I wanted the heated steering wheel, and the Denali package was the only way to get it prior to 2019.
  1. Headlights are pretty bad. I understand the Colorados are even worse than the Canyons - I added an HID kit, so that issue has been fixed
  2. 4 way seats 2015 to 2018. 6 way seats 2019 and up - I changed my seats to 6 way seat. Much more comfortable
  3. Electric tailgate lock not available until recently from factory - I just fixed this by changing out my unreliable Pop-n-Lock over the the OEM style lock this past weekend, thanks to member @fondupot's insight and YouTube video.
  4. Trans shifts kind of weird - I had the flush, and it helped some, but....

Headlights, yes thank you I completely forgot about headlights! The headlights are just bad (2017 z71 diesel). Sometimes I'll actually take my wife's Prius at night instead of my truck if I'm going to a very dark place. The Prius lights are a thousand times better than the stock Colorado lights. Chevy should be embarrassed about the headlights, the person who designed them should be flogged and fired.
