Chevy calls for 5W20 for V6 oil. I have newer vehicle using 0W20. I'd like to use 0W20 on V6.

Any comment?

if you use 5w20 or 0w20 your gonna wreck the engine! the 3.6 v6 uses 5w30, if you must use a wierd oil, that motor can take 0w30 in cold regions.

Thanks all. My old memory and seldom oil changes failed me. The filler cap says 5w30. I use full synthetic and has been dealer oil and filter then DIY with Mobil 1. Thinking Kirkland or Wal-Mart may be good low cost alternstive to Mobil 1, yes 5W30.

Truck is very low mileage. So last oil change was further back in time than recommended.

Getting hard to find someone to recycle used oil.

By law, any retailer that sells oil must have have a recycled oil container and cannot charge for providing the service.

Viscosity Grade Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine oil for the 3.6L V6 engine. Use SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade engine oil for the 2.5L L4 engine. Cold Temperature Operation: In an area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls below −29°C (−20°F), an SAE 0W-30 oil may be used for the 3.6L V6 engine and SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade engine oil may be used for the 2.5L L4 engine.

what he said.

As long as its says DEXOS approved 5w30 your good. these trucks only take synthetic 5w30 oils too, dont put in conventional or semi-synthetic oils.

With the VVT engines, you really need to use tge correct viscosity that is called out usually marked on the oil fill cap.

It is very important that the correct viscosity is used for correct operation of the VVT components to work correctly.

While there are companies that sell motor oil and also accept used oil for recycling, there is no federal requirement that motor oil vendors must also accept used oil for recycling. Your state might have more stringent regulations than federal EPA so be sure to reach out to them to find out.

Yeah I think that's kind of become a wives tale that anywhere selling accepts used oil. Most of the chain auto parts stores around here will take used oil. However you can find oil at gas stations and even supermarkets around here, and I guarantee your local ShopRite isn't going to accept used motor oil.

Per the NYS DEC:
New York State law requires numerous service and retail locations to accept used oil from household DIYs (who is otherwise exempt from regulation) for recycling. Under Article 23, Title 23 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL) (link leaves DEC's website), any service establishment that sells at least 500 gallons per year of new oil and performs vehicle servicing must accept from the public, at no charge, up to 5 gallons of used oil per person per day. Retailers who don't service vehicles but sell at least 1,000 gallons per year of new oil must either accept used oil from the public, as service establishments do, or contract to have another service or retail establishment accept it on their behalf. Some municipalities in New York State also collect DIY used oil as part of their Household Hazardous Waste Program.
So you need to check your state laws for what places are required, if any, to accept oil.

If you're in northern states, I always advise one to check some of the local repair shops, most have waste oil burners to keep the joint warm and are happy to take free fuel.

So for what it is worth, my wife's Mazda CX-5 calls for 0W-20 in USA, but outside USA 5W-30 with the identical engine. Poking around the Mazda forum it seems that it is solely to slightly improve USA EPA mileage ratings. I would stick with 5W-30 unless you are operating only in very low temperatures.

Just getting back to conversation. I was at Costco today and purchased Kirkland full synthetic and found an "oil charge $1.40" so I stopped at help desk and asked about Costco handling recycle given I get an oil charge added to my purchase. Person on drdk had no answer. Interested on Costco experiences. Is hard to ask corporate Costco since they shut off their email interface to customers.

Intetesting. I checked again with my township county repair facility and was yold they would again accept oil. Didn't say when as they were updating tank and moving on property.. County will take limited amounts on hazardous was days couple times a year.

Wonder why I don't get email notice of activity on posts even when I create them.

This thread has been dead for over a year, please check last post dates. Also, Toyota calls for 0w20. GM calls for 5w30 in the 3.6, not 0w20. Apples and oranges.
