TPMS question?

Does anyone have a pic of the factory tpms on the factory rim for a Colorado or Canyon?

Is it possible to remove/replace the sensor by breaking the bead and pressing down on the tire or does the tire have to be completely removed?

As a mechanic, is it possible to do it on the rim with prybars and such, sure. Do you want to bust your ass that badly to do it is another story. Most tire places around here will either charge you $5 per wheel if you are carrying it in, if they charge you at all.

As for what they look like, sadly I dont have my old ones lying around but, Ive seen 2 different styles both just as generic looking at the next.

I work at a tire shop and that’s all we do when we replace them is break the top bead unscrew the sensor pull the old stem out and then pull the new one through with the sensor attached.

@Toughsox or @greco2003 - if I might interject a related question here. I recently bought a set of 4 tires on rims w/o sensors. I noticed the wheels have balancing weights attached to the rims (not along where the bead line is) on the under belly of the rims. Should the weights on these wheels be taken off and rebalanced if a new set of tires are put on? Or has the technology advances to the point where once balanced you never need to do it again?

Also, do you know if you should remove the weights prior to powder coating?

Gusto!

If you add tire sensors to your tires, then you will need rebalancing

If you get the rims powder coated, they will remove the weights and you will need rebalancing

It looks like it’s just held on by a single screw

I have 3 weeks off from work and absolutely nothing to do, if it’s possible to change out with simple tools then I’ll just do it my self. But if it requires the wheel to be fully removed from the rim then I would rather just sit on my ass and pay someone

As for the powder coating, yes, they completely disassemble to tire, weights, sensors and reinstall them (and rebalance them) when they put it together. Word of caution......when you go pick the tires up, let them install them at that time if possible. I had my spare tires and rims done, picked them up, rolled them into the garage to put on the following day only to come out and find one tipped over, naturally hitting a ratchet I had laying near it and putting a deep groove into the new rim. Thankfully I went back and the guy re-did that one rim on the house but, lesson learned.

No TPMS sensor on Full Size Spare Tires?

Just rotated tires for the first time. First time putting the full size ZR2 spare on the ground. Got an error on the TMS immediately - need to re-learn the new location of each tire for the monitoring system.

When having #1 son reset the TMS computer at his shop - was not able to read the ZR2 spare now on the right rear.

Does Chevy leave a TPMS sensor off of full size spare tires??

Chevy will sell me one for ~$90 uninstalled. Amazon have them per prior post for <$20. Discount Tires want $65 to install and reset system.

Chevy - My Bow Tie is a little sideways IF you purposely leave the TPMS sensor off Full Size Spares? Pls tell me it just isn’t so and I have a bad sensor....

Thanks / RcJHoustonZR2

Have to be honest with you....the TPSM monitor system sucks if you have any sort of OCD. Seeing 1 tire off by a pound drove me nuts. Now, I just refuse to check that part of the DIC.

On a side note, you can add a sensor to the 5th wheel but I believe you can only monitor any 4 at a time.

My personal feeling is, the car manufacturers added this system to generate money. The sensors only last about 5 years or so, then you have the people that rotate their tires and go back to have the system relearned....... While many people seem to freak out if their tire monitor light comes on, common sense tells you to just look at the 4 wheels....you'll usually know right away which one is lighting up the dashboard.

The problem is there is an annoying warning every time you start the engine and the dash light stays on if you don’t have working TPMS.

I picked up a reset tool for $13. Used it for first time. Works like a charm. I recommend anybody that is swapping wheels or tires around to pick one up. Saves a trip to the dealer.

Hmmmm, my truck doesnt seem to have this feature. But then again, my truck has an upgraded stereo system that comes on as soon as I start my truck which they can hear 2 towns over. Cant for the life of me say Ive ever heard any such warnings. >:)

just as a side note, well, direct answer really, you can replace it by just breaking the bead on the valve stem side but good luck breaking it without a tire machine. Then it will be off balance by whatever the sensor weighs. So, might as well go to a tire shop and have it done anyway.

Just thought I would add that On star will send you a email if your tire is running low based on the tpms reading, neat little unneeded feature but can come in handy. Had my truck in the dealer the last few days getting the shudder reprogram, this morning at 8am Onstar sent me an email saying my driver front was low, pls check immediately. Went to pick up the truck later and waited to see if they adviser would fess up and she did, said the tech was out on a road test, picked up a big screw and got a flat in my less than 1000 mile Fortitude's. They repaired it properly from the inside and they waived the $35 charge, I wouldn't have paid anyway. But good news is they extended the buy 3 tires get 1 free, so I ordered a set of BFG KO2's at a good price.
