Will the MyGMC app allow me to remotely start my new Canyon without OnStar? If I do have to maintain the service, will maintaining the hot spot (wifi) alone work? Thanks!

I ment up until they implement the new mandatory subscription.Nope. This has already been covered in this thread, GMC is forcing basically the full OnStar experience on new 2022+ GMC vehicles, 3 years for $1,500. No way to opt out and save $1,500. Since the OP has a GMC, and a 2022 at that, it was worth having them check if they bought before or after that mandatory option was tacked on. GM is doing the same to new Buick vehicles as well.
All manufacturers are trying something to this effect... BMW in some markets was trying to charge a monthly fee for heated seats to be enabled... In this world of everyone looking for "recurring revenue" we're going to see more and more of this. Its almost like an extension of dealers pushing leases and then making their money on selling 2 year old used cars when the lease ends.Nope. Dang that’s crazy. I built my 2021 instead of dealer lot pick. I hate Onstar so I never ever add them to my builds. Onstar literally isn’t present on my truck and they had no problem doing that but now on next years model they’re force it on you for $1500. WtfDepends on when it was bought, 2022s are now coming with a "required option" of 3 years of full OnStar + hotspot for $1500. The OP needs to look at their window sticker, that will tell them exactly what it came with.

Well since you asked I’ll give a simple example why. My machine shop is huge. If you work in the lathe department like myself I’m a 4 min walk away till I would get into range then another 4 min walk back. I don’t have Onstar even installed on my truck so I can’t activate if I wanted but I was just giving you simple example of why from when I had a lease with Onstar. The app was absolutely amazing for me.Purely curiosity but why do you need to start it from so far away? The fob reaches pretty far, at least 30 seconds of walking which is more than enough (IMO) to get it nice and toasty in the winter.
When traveling, I would use the remote app while waiting for my luggage at the airport or for the shuttle bus to the parking lot. It is nice not having to scrape your windshield and having a warm truck waiting for you on a cold winter day.Purely curiosity but why do you need to start it from so far away? Then your AT4 will probably only have 3 months of free service. Afterwards you would have to get a package just for the remote data/starting. At least that is how it went for my 2022 AT4 2.8L."2022s are now coming with a "required option" of 3 years of full OnStar + hotspot for $1500."
DieselDrax, I had read about this. Luckily I missed it by about two weeks.
I do that every year on my safety and security package. Only difference is after haggling with who ever answers my call I tell them I want to talk to a supervisor. I always get it for a year way cheaper than advertised price. If you call to cancel, they’ll transfer you to a retention department and offer you a better deal on the same services
No it doesn't. That's why they lost me as a Onstar customer. How can they charge me to use an app on a phone that I own that connects to a car that I own and doesn't require any interaction with them? Will the MyGMC app allow me to remotely start my new Canyon without OnStar? If I do have to maintain the service, will maintaining the hot spot (wifi) alone work? Thanks!

Seems you're forgetting that in order to use that app on your phone to do things remotely to your truck that the data flows through THEIR services. That is what you pay for. Your phone does not communicate directly with your truck so your analogy is invalid. No it doesn't. That's why they lost me as a Onstar customer. Are you going to start having subscription services so you can open your refrigerator door?
Same strategy works for XM Radio... I get all three cars for the price of less than one at list price - just have to call and threaten to cancel. The strategy is they hope we forget... some incremental revenue is always better than none with services of this nature.I do that every year on my safety and security package. Yes when I had XM did that also saved a ton of money on it to. But you need to be sure to tell them both if you use a credit card you do not want it kept on file and you will check your account online to be sure they dont. That you want paper billing or the next year you will get a surprise full cost charge on your credit card from either of these. So XM would try the trick of sending me paper billing ok. But it was for the full charge. So I'd have to do the same thing all over again, call them up and say nope, cancel it or let me talk to a supervisor.Same strategy works for XM Radio...
