Will the MyGMC app allow me to remotely start my new Canyon without OnStar? If I do have to maintain the service, will maintaining the hot spot (wifi) alone work? Thanks!

When I bought my 2018 Colorado it came with 5 years free remote access app. I also opted for Onstar's Safety & Security package which at the time was $24.99/mo. But when I traded the truck in for a 2021 model I got a 3 month trial for all services and when the trial period was over I went back to the same package I paid for before. EXCEPT they started charging me $9.99/mo additonal for the remote access app. I called them and said I was supposed to get 5 years free and they said that when I bought the new vehicle the terms changed. I told them if they wouldn't honor the old plan then they can just cancel everything. It has now been a year and a half and they haven't offered any similar deals to get me back. I admit I got spoiled by being able to remote start when out of range with the key fob. I now have to walk 2 minutes to get in key fob range, but I figure for saving $35/mo it's okay.

No it doesn't. That's why they lost me as a Onstar customer. How can they charge me to use an app on a phone that I own that connects to a car that I own and doesn't require any interaction with them?
Are you going to start having subscription services so you can open your refrigerator door?
Seems you're forgetting that in order to use that app on your phone to do things remotely to your truck that the data flows through THEIR services. That is what you pay for. Your phone does not communicate directly with your truck so your analogy is invalid.

Remote access is available for 5 years for free on all new GM products from the date of purchase. After that you can get remote access only for $10-$15 a month depending on when you call. This is as long as it's 4G technology. 2014 and older doesn't work because they use 3G technology that is discontinued as of 1/1/2023. Everyone also gets 3 months of OnStar and 1 month of 3gb of internet free on all used vehicles.

Yep. I just did this today. I called in to make sure I wasn’t going to be charged because my all in trials are set to end in a few days. The app remote start is handy though… somewhere I thought I saw you could retain it for around $7 a month but I couldn’t find that information back. The lowest I could find for app remote start was around $14 a month. After onstar transferred me to a different promotional person… I was told they could do the remote start for around 9. I said I thought I saw it for around 7. They asked if it was just the remote start I was interested in I said yea I use it to start and to lock the truck sometimes.. they then said they could do around $6.50, $5.50 for the first year and then $6.50 after that. It should be free, but 5-6 bucks a month is low enough that it’s out of sight & out of mind for me.

I looked at these standard "connected" services, which I suspect they use to collect more meta data and stats than anyone realizes, on the my Chevrolet account website.
The OnStar free trial had long expired. What was left for connected-ness was set to expire in 2023, five years since new.
Im wondering what I'm about to loose, or what it will cost to keep? My GM phone app connectivity?
I like the vehicle location feature.

Just to clarify a few things:

Connected Access is separate and distinct from OnStar Services. Every GM vehicle includes the following three things for 10 years from the purchase date (You must accept the terms and conditions to keep your vehicle "connected"):

Vehicle Diagnostics
A report on key vehicle systems you can receive monthly
Dealer Maintenance Notification
Your vehicle will notify your preferred dealer when it’s time for a service appointment
Chevrolet Smart Driver
Provides information to help improve your driving behavior and reduce wear and tear. Check for discounts with participating insurance carriers to get private, risk free options for driving smart

All other connected services and OnStar services are provided through a limited trail and/or a paid subscription.

So will it be the same way here in Canada and perhaps cost even more? It saddens me that I won't be buying a GMC ever again.😥

GM Authority recently learned that the automaker will equip all new 2022 model-year and 2023 model-year Buick and GMC vehicles with a three-year OnStar and Connected Services Plan (RPO code R9M). The plans will cost between $905 and $1,675

For just remote access via the app it's $150/yr.

Nope. This has already been covered in this thread, GMC is forcing basically the full OnStar experience on new 2022+ GMC vehicles, 3 years for $1,500. No way to opt out and save $1,500. Since the OP has a GMC, and a 2022 at that, it was worth having them check if they bought before or after that mandatory option was tacked on. GM is doing the same to new Buick vehicles as well.

Well if your vehicle is within remote distance... Use the Key Fob

Depends on when it was bought, 2022s are now coming with a "required option" of 3 years of full OnStar + hotspot for $1500. The OP needs to look at their window sticker, that will tell them exactly what it came with.
