Installing Bed Rail Caps... Anyone Had Any Problems?

Hello all,
Just got my spray in bedliner (Christmas presant) sprayed this morning. Both me and my brother in law had them done this morning at the same place. He went over the rail on his white 05 Duramax 2500, and I went under the rail with my black 05 Canyon. I must say, the over the rail job on his truck looks awesome! Almost makes me wish I had went ahead and got mine done as well...

Anyways, I didn't want an over the rail because I had always planned on getting the ABS "diamond plate" bed rail caps and tailgate protector (to match the ABS on my side steps).

I did a little looking around, and found that they cost $131 for the caps and $81 for the tailgate protector at the dealership, although I did find some cheaper online. Anyways, my question is, has anyone on here installed the caps/protector themself? I know the caps only involve a couple strips of 3M tape, and the tailgate protector has a couple screws ( :x ) to hold it down. Not looking forward to having crooked/non-flush bed caps, and I'm definitley not thrilled about drilling holes in my tailgate, but it seems like it would be an easy way to save $75 on install fees... Any input/advice?

Thanks in advance! :D

Merry Christmas to me :p

Merry Christmas to my bro in law (nice job IMO, that is an ABS tailgate protector)

I did the same thing and it is easy to install. When doing the spoiler, have a good center punch and always measure twice. Use good drill bits, I broke one trying to drill my holes, just lucky I didn't scratch the tailgate.

Thanks for the info FL, I just orded them online. I figured if I dwelled on it for too long, I would never get them, so I bit the bullet and did it. Wish me luck with that drill *shudder*... Anyone else have any info/horror stories about puttin these things on themselves?

bed rail caps are a snap. really easy and almost immposible to mess up. Be sure to clean the rail with some sort of sovent based cleaner to insure the tape sticks well. you can find a pic in my gallery.

I used 3M acrylic double sided tape (gray foam with red liner) to install my tailgate protector, it's not going anywhere.
So did you use "extra" tape as in, no screws/drilling at all, only being held in place by the tape, or was the tape an addition to the screws?

Oh and thanks to all for your input :p

Installed both myself with no problems so far. Bought them off eBay for a heck of a price (which I can't remember at the moment). Take your time when installing and it should turn out fine.

Extreme cap is not the same, ours are to have 3 - 1/2'' holes drilled.
I removed the Xtreme cap to have clearance for my tonneau. I installed an ABS plastic cap to protect the paint of the tailgate... no holes drilled! :p

If you are installing an aluminum protector then you might get away with installing additional tape lengthwise under the cap.

installed both on mine two years ago, holding up well but the tailgate cap has a bolt cover that keeps popping open, I can't get it to stay closed. Thinking about just gluing the damn thing closed. They were both a snap to install but you do have to drill into the tailgate. Now if I want to put something on less bulky I have three holes to cover.

Oh - if you are doing this in the cold it's a good idea to hook your garden hose up to a laundry sink or whatever has hot water supply and run lots of hot water over everything after they're installed, pressing down after they heat up. Just to insure adhesion. Heat guns are nice but they will put a "shine" to the plastic if you aren't careful.

Mine are GMC rail caps and installed from the factory but now they are raising on both sides near the cab. Where do you go to get that 3M tape? I need to re-adhere mine once the weather warms or get it in the garage to do it.
I picked up some at pep boys. It was about 9 bucks for a 5 ft long x 1 inch roll of it. It looks the same as the double sided tape that came prestuck to the rails (gray foam with red plastic). There were a few other sizes/prices, but I figured what I got would be perfect for its appliaction

I accidently drank about 18 beers while watching the Panthers WHIP NEW YORK GIANT ASS!, and decided to go ahead and put em on tonight... Not too bad, but ya cant really tell much from under the garage light. Looks like the caps might be a lighter "gray" than the black ABS that I have on my side steps and bumper
