I'm sure that someone has pulled this piece off before. Any tips? Looking to possibly add some plugs and switches and things.

Yep, very simple to remove. Took longer to get the cables unclipped than pulling it. Thanks again.

Interestingly I see 2 Mini-B ports to seemingly the single USB-C on the front with a cable only attached to one of them. The USB-A is fed by the other connector. I wonder if I can feed an alternative connector to that USB-C and dual purpose it? That would save me from adding an aftermarket port.

What I'm looking to do is add a connection for my phone to plug into to feed a usb-c to optical signal converter into my DSP. And volume control for the DSP. There is room on the panel for those easily.

However, from an ergonomics viewpoint ideally I would get my volume knob here and may pursue this option that will make me happier in the long run.

Looks like there is probably room behind there for the circuit board just from feeling around with my little finger and looking with a flashlight. But now need to figure out how to get into the console. I may wait on that until after I have the dealer look at the gremlin in my L shifter. Then again maybe I'll find something with the connections and fix it myself if I get eyes under there first.

So, what I gather from service data; the USB module is a USB hub. So the mini-b connectors are connecitons for that. The other connector is, from left to right; battery positive, LED backlight dimming control, ground

To get the console out, you need to remove the gear shift by pulling up on it, remove the side panels by unclipping them, then pry the console up by unclipping it.

It's kinda dissapointing about the hub because it only puts out 5V. I'd love if it was USB PD capable so I can charge more significant things.

Thank you. That is very informative. I figured the gear shift removal would have been more complex than just pulling up. I'll try getting in there sometime soon.

From my testing, only the center Mini-B seemed to do anything. Tried connecting my phone to laptop, and phone to Douk U2 usb to optical adapter through the usb-c port, with and without power connected and on. I also found on another gm truck forum that the 2nd port was to extend the USB connections to another module at a remote location. So maybe a hub that only connects to another correct module?

The dimmer wire you mentioned is great to know about as that could be a good place to tie in for something.

Ive removed my usb panel after i blew the usb c port when i hooked up a usb c multiport that was powered .. there is no usb hub that will work if you're curious.. i did noticed the extra usb port inside the panel and i thought it was for the wireless charging but if that extra port can carry data, cameras or gateways ( non onstar) can be added on.. im just thinking out loud!!

I got into the console and added my DSP remote volume control tonight. Ended up putting it in with the parking brake recess which was my best ergonomic option after further investigation. I didn't pull the shifter knob since I was reading that can be a pain. Just worked around it and did all the fitting in place.

But the spline shaft ended up being too short with the trim piece so will need to figure out an extension for the knob. So for now I just improvised. :ROFLMAO:
