Wow! HVAC behavior on remote start...

Hi folks! I bought a 2018 Canyon SLT. Did a remote start this evening. The outside temperature was around 50 degrees. When I got in the truck about 60 seconds after the start, the HVAC fan was blowing hard and I could not turn it off. I discovered that I had to put the key in the ignition and turn the switch it to the run position to stop the fan from blowing cold air. Has anyone else experienced this behavior?

If it’s in Auto with the heat selected when you last shut it off it will run the fan on high when you start it back up when it’s cold outside. Ditto for A/C and it’s hot. My truck does the same thing whenever I start it...remote or key.

Just got a JD Powers survey. Overall, the truck is great. But the auto climate control is going to get blasted due to lack of operator control. Personally, I’d rather have the manual system if GM can’t get the programming right.

Any auto system goes full blast at first in efforts to normalize the cabin temperature to the pre-selected temperature. My 5 series did the same thing. You can alleviate this by leaving "AUTO" off when shutting the truck off.

One interesting thing to note is that placing a phone call will slow the fan speed to not drown out the microphone input or speaker output.

I always have the ac set on auto, and when I use the remote start the truck knows if hot outside it will crank up the ac and if its cold outside it will put the heater on and warm up the drivers' seat. The thermostat inside the truck takes a temperature reading and figures out if you need the ac or heater depending on what you have you're desired temperature set at.

That's normal, especially in cool/cold weather. It's blasting the defrost fan to ensure the windshield is clear/defrosted before you get in but with only 60 seconds of runtime before you got in the remote start was pretty pointless. If you're going to use remote start then it's best to do it 5-10 minutes before you're going to get in so that it has time to cool/heat the cab.

Of course I know that. That is a given. A good engineering practice would be not to run the fan until the engine is warm. Not much thought put into control algorithm of the AC controls in my opinion.
Your expectations are a bit too high. :grin2:

If a child or pet is locked inside a hot vehicle, in some jurisdictions, it is legal to break the windows to save them.
Perhaps a call to OnStar with the VIN will get a remote start turning on the AC until the owner is located,
and reprimanded.

I don't think this is true. I have my auto fan setting at low, but it still blasts high on startup, remote or otherwise. I get that it is trying to get the truck to temperature ASAP, but it generally sucks.
I think the auto climate control is horrible. It tries to adjust the temperature too quickly. If it's cold outside and the sun starts warming the cab a degree above the auto temperature, it starts blasting cold air into the cab. I'd prefer an auto system that wasn't so aggressive.
Someone else mentioned that the heated seats come on with remote start, but that is a setting to, and one I like.

I'm really not sure what you guys are talking about with auto? I have had my Z71 for three years now and never use auto. I just set the temp and remote start and either the AC turns on when it's hot or the heat and heated seats turn on when it is cold. You don't have to have your truck set to "Auto" for this to work.
