Definitely not. I had my tie down straps in there and we got some good rain last night. Opened it up this morning to see if it was dry and the straps were soaked and there was water inside.
That might possibly be a defect because I think Chevy made it to be water tight? I’d check with your dealer….it has the rubber gasket right?

My plan for the tailgate storage is to toss the factory jack and lug wrench in there, wrapped in dense foam. I need to free up some space under the rear seats.

I couldn't fit the jack in there because the "feet" were too tall. Just FYI.

Are there any hooks inside to put cargo net hooks on? I want to put foam inside and lay my tools on them, then use a bungee net to hold them in.

Tools include very large pipe wrench, pliers, adjustable wrench, latex gloves, full sets of drivers and hex wrench set. Is there enough room for a good amount of tools?

Also, does it lock?

Curious, once you toss 50 pounds or more of tools in the tailgate, how well does the tailgate EZ Lift work?

Pretty sure you won't have to wait for it to come down...the poor little dampener will scream WTF!! LOL

Here's the organizer kit for the tailgate compartment:

Seems a bit expensive for what it is, and I'll probably end up buying it anyway :(

Bill
i wonder if it'll fit the Gen2 tailgate, can anyone measure their tail gate so i can compare? i would love this organizer for my hitch and straps

It's not the storage compartment, it's an organizer parts to secure things in trucks with the compartment.

i read that after but my question still stands, would the storage still fit, its a plastic tailgate cover so the steel may be able to be cut out and installed on a gen2 tailgate. its an upgrade i might consider doing to mine if its possible to do.

i love the concept for storing tie downs and my trailer hitch and free up the space under my rear seat for other items like snow brushes and scrapers, tire pumps and patch kits

Not a chance, the outer tailgate metal on the Gen3’s is formed to accept the inner storage unit, the Gen2’s are flat.

Better option would be to see if a complete Gen3 tailgate would attach to your Gen2, not sure if it would fit or how it would look but ya never know.

That might be a great afternoon swap out for an owner of a 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen to explore.

Today we had 1.2" of rain in a 20 minute period. First good bit of rain since back in early May. Anyway, just checked and, its definitely not water tight. I don't have a tonneau installed yet, so my gut is the water will be cut down pretty significantly once thats in. But, completely water tight? Doesnt look like it. The seal is in tact, but even that has holes in it, which looks like its by design.

Glad I tested this before throwing any electronics or anything in there.

This seems to be another issue people are facing. Some are waterproof, some aren’t. The hole in it is so that the rubber can dry easier and not rot. When I take my order I’m going to spray the hose with some hydrophobic silicon spray and see if that helps….I bet it’s just not putting enough pressure on the gasket to make a full seal
