Stupid question but have you checked your power steering fluid level? I haven't noticed anything like that on mine, I also have a Z71 4x4.

I've got a 2007 Canyon Z71 4X4 reg. cab and I can turn it real easy. Your right there must be a problem with the steering.

 

I have an 05 colly 4x4 Z71 and My steering sucks at a dead stop or turning tight corners at low speeds. Its like I have no power steering at a dead stop. I have to crank on the wheel with both hands, and even thats tough. WTF, this sucks.

Yeah mine too, but you aren't supposed to turn at a dead stop, its bad for your steering and front end.

Umm... just though of this. Are you in 4wd? That will happen when you are.

 

My 06 canyon cc z71 4wd turns very easy, I back up a boat trailer every weekend and have had no complaints.

 

Not that Im aware of, The light shows that Im in 2wd and I can still peel out without the front tires spinning, so I must still be in 2wd. I thought that I was to at first, but it doesnt seem like I am.

 

In addition to that, My steering is ok when I first start up and get going. When everything starts to warm up is when I start loosing my steering at slower speeds when turning. Whats up with that?

 

Maybe take it to a dealership sounds like it could be a one off problem with your power steering.

 

I have a very busy schedule, I was hoping it wouldn't be something like a new pump or anything. getting to a dealership is touchy for me. I guess its time, this has been going on for about a two months now.

Anyone ever come up with a resolve for this? My 05 is like this. I took it to the dealer and they said thats normal. I asked why the 07 I had just driven for a loaner was so easy to turn. They said its a different type of steering. Gottaa be a way to make it easier. I have an 05 as well Z71 4X4.

 

Has to be the pump going bad or the fluid is old and breaking down after getting hot.

Unless something is binding up It's got to be in the rack-n-pinion / pump. The steering system is really not complex. Good luck.

 

Ive been feeling this on my '06 too. Kept thinking I was stuck in 4WD even though the light is on 2WD. hmmm.

I bought the truck as an '06 leftover last May, it was just sitting on the lot forever. Could this cause the fluid to crap out earlier?

 

I bought my 05 with 80 mi on it in Nov of 06. It sat for a while, no problems with mine.

 

Does anyone know about how much power steering fluid our Colorado/Canyon trucks take?
