what ever you replace them with they have to have the same impednece as the Bose speakers

The doors are dedicated midwoofers with a subwoofer identity crisis. They sound unimpressive because technically you shouldn’t hear anything come out of them at those frequencies.

I reccomend not changing them to coaxial, but it’s your truck so do as you please.

 

Christmas came early today. Focal speakers showed up unexpectedly.
Anyone have any pointers for the DIY speaker swap in all 4 doors?
Already have pnp harnesses and speaker adapters.
Hope to get them swapped out this weekend.

Got the focal 6.5" flax speakers installed into the doors. The sound is unbelievably better than the stock Bose speakers, they are MUCH clearer. The sound should only get better as they break in. Will probably add a subwoofer in the future.

 

I'm very interested in hearing about this install. My understanding is that the factory Bose system has oddball Ohm ratings which makes it difficult to use aftermarket speakers. The 2nd gen specs are readily available on this forum, but not the 3rd gen. Were you able to find/figure out what the factory Bose specs are? Size, wattage, impedance?

What speakers did you install?

Any need for adaptors or are the factory speakers standard sizing?

What about adaptors for the wiring? Is the factory wiring standard or is there some sort of funky connector?

 

Wire and speaker adapters are needed. Check crutchfield for reference for adapter part numbers, then source from your favorite vendor.
Factory Bose speakers are 6x9 (made in mexico) for front doors and 6.5 (made in china) for rear doors. The 3 dash speakers appear to be 2.75". I have not replaced those yet.
EDIT: the Bose ceneter speaker is NOT 2.75", it is larger. I did not measure it.

Ordered powerbass direct fit tweeters for the dash and will report back after install. The Bose dash speakers are disproportionately loud compared to the 4 ohm focal door speakers. Hopeing the 4 ohms of the powerbass balance it back out.

 

You are under-powered for those Focal Flax Speakers so it makes sense that your dash speakers are loud. You're in swap hell to be blunt. The Bose system is designed as a whole, any speaker changes are not going to make it sound any better, just different. Different good or bad is in the ear of the beholder.

To exasperate the issue the after market speakers may have an impedance mismatch so to "hear them" you turn the volume up which increases the volume to the dash speakers also.

The rear speakers are to fill in the over all sound, also not to be heard. But some people will install sub and woofers with big amps for the rear

 

The Powerbass dash speakers made a huge improvement, sound is much more balanced and rich. They are plug and play for the dash corner locations. The plug is larger on the speakers but the oem truck plug still plugs in.
The dash bose speakers are made in Mexico.

Yes, work with Bose. I have an extra set, $35 shipped. I also have a set of 6.5" focals which will also be for sale.
I bought the extra set of Focals just in case the Flax set did not fit as Crutchfield said they would not (they did fit).

 

I have also updated my Bose system too. I just replaced the door speaker with some aftermarket ones. That can am defender accessories made a big difference. Then I went with another Brand speaker, they fit well and sound great. According to my own experience, I think Keep the rest stock if you don't want to full replacement. Best wishes.

 

Seems like the door speakers were overwhelmed with trying to produce highs and lows. So I ended up adding a subwoofer under the rear seat taking most of the lows away from the doors...made a huge difference!

 

Where did you tap into the speakers to run your sub?
