I am one of those anal people who record every fill-up in a log book. Just for grins I thought I would check the average MPG based on every fill up since I took delivery of my truck on 9-24-06. Some baseline conditions to consider...
stock tune
no load in bed
primarily driven as a solo occupant and only driver
sea level altitude
mostly dry and arid Nor Cal climate
primarily driven short distances, stop and go driving
occasionally pull a small utility trailer
gentle throttle application habit
tires 32 psi
oil change every 3000
Valero brand, oxyginated California blend, regular gas
total miles 7649
29 fill-ups, (one not recorded)
lowest MPG 14.8
highest MPG 19.8
average MPG since new, 17.1
and the bad news..
lowest price per gallon, $2.29.9 on 10-28-06
highest price per gallon $3.66.9 on 4-12-08

Your results may vary.

04 zq8 3.5 I-5 5-speed 3.42's
K&N FIPK
Flowmaster
Spirited driver
usually not loaded heavily but i have found it doesn't make that much of a difference. I use ultra high performance summer tires during the summer in a 245/45R17 size.

Worst Fuel Economy Ever: 17.8mpg (Two autocrosses and 100% city driving), worst MPG BY FAR
Best Fuel Economy: 27.2 mpg (Last Fall, all freeway, 65-70mph)

In mixed driving/commuting i get around 20-21mpg during the winter and 22-23 summer.
Typically freeway trips are 23-24 winter and 24-27 summer, depending on speed.

I typically average about 18 1/2...

best ever was on a road trip with a tailwind, 21 mpg
worst ever was 16ish - don't remember anything specific that made it that, could be my bad math... I haven't seen it below 17 mpg in at least 6 months.

I have 31's with 2 in shackles and level in the front (21 mpg was before this was installed with just a TB crank to level out the stock ride)
tonneau cover over bed

My daily commute is right at 80 miles total. 60 miles highway and 20 miles city driving.
If I drive the speed limit (or at least close to it) my gas milage is right at 22 mpg.
Drops off in the winter, and goes up if I drive long highway stretches.

3.5 L, auto, extended cab ZQ8, 36# in the tires. No load in the bed, and almost always commute alone.

how are you guys calculating the MPG. are you guys dividing the miles you get by the number of gallons you pump till the light turns on or by the fuel tank size which is over 19 gallons. Just curious. remember that we still have close to a gallon left when the light comes on.
First fill up your tank, all the way. Then reset your trip od, when you get to lets say 1/8 tank of gas, fill it to the top again, same as before. Then see how many miles you went before you reset the trip. Divide that by the gallons you put in the second time = MPG. Example (250 miles driven / 16 gallons of gas = 15.63 MPG). No you will not get all 19.5 gallons in unless you run it out of gas, I would not recommend that.

2006 I4 CC.
60/40 Highway/City driving
34,906 miles

Fairly aggressive driving and often carrying computer equipment.

I've tracked every drop of gas I've added. 23.11 mpg with a best of 24.5 and a low of 20.4 when I had 20 inch wheels on.

So far very, very pleased!

PGHZ71, that's how I calculate mine. I rarely ever put in less than a full tank when I fill up, unless I'm just really really pushin' it (or just straight up forget, I do that sometimes :p:p). I haven't had the balls to push the truck over 350 miles to the tank... but then again, up until a few posts ago on this thread, I didn't know how big our gas tanks were :p :p

p.s. I didn't know there was another way to calculate our mpg (by hand, that is) - how can you accurately calculate mpg without doing the full tank method?

With my stock '06 Colorado I4/auto/3.73 I've achieved a best of a little over 31 mpg on flat freeway at 70 mph between Detroit and Cleveland a couple of summers ago. This truck regularly gets 23 - 24 in a 50/50 city/highway mix on summer fuel. With winter fuel it drops by 1 or 2 mpg.

With my stock '07 Canyon I4/5 spd/3.73 I've achieved a best of a little over 27 mpg and regularly get 23 - 24 in a 50/50 city/highway mix on summer fuel. This one also drops 1 or 2 mpg on winter fuel.

The absolute worst I have ever gotten on either of these trucks is 19 something. That's on winter fuel over days of slow snow winter driving between home and work in the Detroit area. And that's only happened a couple of times.

I'm very pleased with the gas mileage I get with these trucks. But I'm also 50 something and don't typically drive has hard as you young 'uns!

Like upflying, I record my mileage for every tank of gas, too. I'll go through my logbook and get the average and post it here.

As promised, here are the MPG stats from my logbook:

The vehicle is a 2WD 2007 GMC Canyon regular cab with the I-4, 5 speed manual and 3.73 rear axle.

My first recorded fill-up was on 4/28/2007 when the truck was new and I've filled up a total of forty times through 4/20/2008 for one year's worth of data.

My driving is typically a 50/50 city/freeway mix on generally flat roads around the greater Detroit area.

The average across all forty tanks is 22.875.

The best tank was 26.64 - Nov 2007

The worst tank was 19.8 - Jan 2008 where we had cold and snow for an extended period. This is the only tank in the teens.

Tanks of < 19 MPG = 0

Tanks of 19.x MPG = 1

Tanks of 20.x = 0

Tanks of 21.x = 5

Tanks of 22.x = 9

Tanks of 23.x = 13

Tanks of 24.x = 6

Tanks of 25.x = 4

Tanks of 26.x = 2

Tanks of >= 27 = 0

If I get real ambitious I may through the numbers into Excel and plot some graphs.

To get these kinds of numbers I drive the truck in a reasonable fashion. And I do a lot of coasting up to red traffic signals or stop signs. Coasting three or four blocks up to a signal is not unusual for me. I also shift from 1 - 2 and 2 - 3 at under 3,000 RPM and try to keep my tire pressure at 33 - 35 psi on the P225/75x15 BF Goodrich Radial Long Trails.

I have a brand spanking new truck to add MPG figures from so we can see how the mileage changes after break-in. My truck is a 2008 Colorado Crew Cab 3.7L auto 2WD. The only item on it not from the factory is a Truxedo soft tonneau I put on last night.

The dealer only gets a $37 allowance from GM to fill the truck, so the tank was only 3/4 full at delivery. I filled it up near home at 46 total miles.

Took the truck for a 90% highway ride today to show my dad the new wheels. As the truck is in the break-in phase, I did vary spped every 10-15 miles on the highway stretch from 50 to 55 to 60. In one stretch I had to run 65 to not get run off the road by the big trucks. Filled it up when I got home at 236 total miles for a trip of 190.5 miles per the trip computer and 7.77 gallons used for my first fillup MPG of 24.52 MPG. I doubt I'll be this much of a nanny on trips post break-in, but it's nice to know that you can get good mileage with a little restraint on the highway.

To celebrate I took the trash and recyclables to the transfer station :)

I've had my truck since February; 2 wd crew cab with the 5 cylinder and automatic. I drive 5 over the speed limit most of the time but don't acclerate like I'm racing. In country road/interstate driving, 55/75 mph, I'm getting 24 to 26 mph empty and 22 to 24 with 1,000 to 1,400 lbs in the bed. This is about a 5 mpg increase over the Dodge Dakota I used to have. Needless to say I am well pleased. 8)

Yeah my dealer fill up MPG was 24mpg too. After that, the next one was like 15mpg and then it's slowly been climbing back up. I think I'm at 22 or 23 now. Hope it keeps going up.
