Radio/Infotainment Rebooting Constantly in 2021 Canyon - TSB PIT5790A

Just got back from the dealership for an issue that started 2 weeks after purchasing my CCLB Canyon Denali. The radio/infotainment unit randomly reboots, sometimes dropping audio, sometimes not, and sometimes changing the volume. It would also loose HVAC control, ability to change radio stations, GPS, outside temp, and would even play AM/FM behind the streaming audio I was listening to (Spotify, SiriusXM) so I could hear both as the same time.

It became more and more frequent until it would do it every time I drove the truck no matter what I did, however it did appear that changing the volume with either the knob or the steering wheel buttons would immediately trigger it.

In any case I went to the dealer after 2 weeks of it starting (4 weeks of ownership) and they reproduced the issue, went through diagnostics, and could not fix it. Then they found GM'S TSB PIT5790A which states if the cause is only with a change in volume then essentially do no perform any more diagnostics, they are aware and are working on the fix but nothing is available, see attached pic for full TSB)

My question is has anyone else had this issue? The TSB is for Canyons and Colorados 2019-2021 (as well as a number of other GM vehicles) and the dealer said to call GM to inform them and they can follow up with me when they have a fix which I did.

I have this issue but only have had it happen when my iPhone is hooked up and using Google Maps. The infotainment system seems to get overloaded and reboots. I was at the dealer yesterday and was told the same thing. It drives me crazy when the voice volume gets really high and the radio volume gets too low to hear.

I hope they find the cure, at least we are on “the list” now.

I was wondering whether it was being overwhelmed by the number of things I had running, I tried disabling Android Auto (since I don't have any android devices anyway) and considered removing OnStar services and Hotspot. Then I started considering maybe it was my GMC profile that was loading, in any case I tried it all and it still does the same rebooting and has progressivly gotten worse, it now reboots every time I touch the volume no matter if my phone is connected or not.

Notice the countries of origin top of gig notice. My base radio has had simular but being on lockdown continuously have not really spent time in my 7 month old 21 AT4 yet. If I knew my state would have stayed locked down this long I’d of saved a ton of $$$.
That is interesting, I only glanced at the Countries and assumed the US was included since it was provided at a US dealer. I will mention this to them the next time I go in since I will be taking it in again, I can't even use my radio or any functions anymore which is pretty frustrating for a 4 week old truck.

I sued GM for the same problem in my 19 Canyon. They settled by giving me cash and telling me to live with it or sell the truck.

The truck spent over 30 days at the dealer with no fix.

It’s gotten worse over the past month. I had the system reboot on me 3 times in 20 minutes while using Apple CarPlay and talking on the phone. But it does it not just during calls but mostly when CarPlay is running.

I think I'm having a related issue with 2021 Colorado WT. But it doesn't happen while I'm looking--it seems to occur while the truck is parked and off, and the only way I know is these symptoms after I return to the truck and start it:
  • Volume is lowered all the way down (to zero)
  • Tone settings are completely lost (everything is zeroed out)
  • Auto-Volume control is reset to none
Oddly enough, the FM presets are not lost (I haven't had to reprogram them). I've re-adjusted the Tone settings over 10 times in the month I've been driving this truck, and they are constantly reset to zero. But not every time. It seems to be more likely the longer I let the truck sit.

I've never seen this happen while using the infotainment system (much less turning the volume knob). I have driven for miles before realizing my podcast app has been playing the whole time with zero volume (auto-play even when that feature is turned off in the infotainment system and Android Auto is another problem but I doubt it's related).

This is the exact issue I am having with my 2 week old '21 Colorado. I have the 7" Infotainment system and almost every time I start the vehicle the radio settings have been lost, but not any saved channels. Anyone else know a fix or what causes this at least? Also the rearview camera stays on for a while after shifting out of reverse, around 5-10 seconds I think but I haven't timed it yet. I would think this would be a faster response in changing.

I'm having to have Onstar/GM reset and send updates to my 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation now 2x in 2 months. The system works but no access to data for the apps (Nav, Spotifiy, etc.). The wireless access didn;t work duing the first outage and reset but worked the second time.

I drove from the Ford dealership after a Ranger test ride and bough the GMC. I hope I did the right thing.

Just drove my boat home from the storage place - was a nice change from the Subaru Forester pulling it :)

This TSB says it applies to RPO codes I0S, I0U, I0T.

My 2019 literature says:
a I0R is a Infotainment 3 unit with a 7" screen
a IOS is a Infotainment 3 Plus unit with a 8" screen
a IOT is a Infotainment 3 Premium with Navigation and a 8" screen

There is no IOU. Does the IOU exist and what is it?

Thanks

'21 Colorado here: Does anyone know about just getting an aftermarket deck? I've experienced such a mess and lack of customer service from GM and dealership that I'm wanting to take out the factory deck and install something that will work. I work in construction sales and design - If I'm not navigating, I'm on the phone and I can't even begin to try to use the frustrating OnStar or Chevy Navigation, so my thought was, "Just get a better interface". What are your thoughts? (Crutchfield says "not recommended" to any deck replacement I look up on their site for 2021.

My trucks Nav works great, and why in the would are you using On-Star for.

So you are parked and you put in the location you want to go to and what?
It will not find the location?
It does not tell you how to get there?
Says ERROR?

I’m getting along with my stereo fine. Its just pissy wanting some sort of password for apps I am confused By. I thought since so few cars/trucks are for sell at the lot I’d take a drive over to wake someone up too see if they could help me solve my fantom pass code. The problem with computer error messages they lack detailed info a guy can understand right away what the computer wants.

Update: replaced deck with Kenwood DNX997XR. Everything is fine now. Had to get an additional back up camera installed as they couldn’t retain the factory one (it’s basically not hardwired, Bluetooth) Issues are gone and no more random reboots, crazy volume control issues, etc. just a deck that works… and wireless CarPlay (nice addition). Had to loose some things, but overall, my quality of drive life is better now.

My 21 Canyon is at the dealership now for the radio issue. They thought it was a pinched wire only to get more codes after they thought it was fixed. Now the think it's a faulty harness but not 100% sure. The entire dash is now out of my brand new truck with 3000 miles on it and the technician still isn't sure what's wrong. In not sure if I should trade it in or keep it once fixed. Sounds like people keep having the same problem over and over again.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I’ve had my 2021 Colorado for a year and had these issues week 1 and my dealership hasn’t fixed it. They replaced my radio last week and it didn't get any better.
  • My screen will go black out of no where, but especially during calls. This happens when I’m connected through Apple CarPlay a lot
  • I will lose all control of my radio and my speakers will go loud and I can’t turn anything off
  • My speakers will echo and then everything shuts off
  • I can’t hear my blinkers sometimes
  • My rear view camera will be blurry, will glitch and turn off, and will turn on when I’m not in reverse

Any suggestions would be great!!

I just started having this issue with my infotainment system very recently on my 2021 Colorado LT. It seems to turn off and then back on randomly If I'm on a call or GPS. I don't have to touch volume for this to happen. Made an appointment with my dealer which of course is two weeks away. Not looking to promising from reading these reports.

I’m having a lot of these same issues on my ‘21 AT4. Brought it to the dealer for the first service and they said it was because I had a music stick and my iPhone plugged in at the same time. Disconnected the stick and it still happens.
It sucks because I lose my Google or WAZE gps, the phone drops calls randomly, and the system goes into reboot. Worse, the volume control seems possessed either coming on full volume with no way too adjust it as the controls do nothing, or off completely.
Pretty strange radio to be honest, I’m hoping they can figure it out but after reading this I’ve got my doubts. Right now I’ve reverted to using my 10 year old Garmin Zumo as a backup, which isn’t what I expected to have to do - AT ALL!

‘21 Colorado CCLB Z71 with Bose infotainment system.

My issue is exactly as the OP described. I can induce a reboot pretty much any time I touch the volume knob or steering wheel control. It will also do it without any interaction sometimes. Some days are worse than others where it will go into constant boot loop. This is getting pretty old. The dealership line starts with “diagnostic fee…” in spite of my extended warranty I purchased new with the vehicle. Very frustrating for a 3 year old vehicle with 50k miles.

Does not appear there is a factory fix for this? Appreciate that installing an aftermarket unit fixed it, but tbh I’ll sell the truck before I go that route.

Ok so I think I found a resolution so I figured I’d post back here in case anyone (like me) is searching for this topic.

This is stupid simple, but I reset the infotainment system back to factory. From the Home Screen > Settings > System > Return to Factory Settings

Then I selected all 3 options:
1. Reset Vehicle Settings
2. Erase Settings and Personal Data
3. Clear Default Applications

Not sure which of the the 3 were the fix, I just did it all and the issue seems to be resolved. This was bad enough where the infotainment system was in a constant boot-loop.

mine started to mess up
I hear a beep like when I change a staion using the screen, after about 3 of them the screen goes into scrolling all the am stations around, or FM if I am on an FM station and the digital sppedomer goes to the station I am listining to.
I have to arrow over on the right said of steering wheel and go to info from radio, and push the radio button on the dash, it will keep doing this over and over,
when it does this I have to press real hard on the screen to change stations, but whe it is working if I verily touch the screen it will change stations, like there is pressure on the screen.

wifes Jeep did this and it was due to delmanition of the screen...
