Pros/Cons of tool box vs cap

So in 2009 I bought my Colorado 4x4 and the first thing I did was put a tonneau cover on it. Then I put 31x10.5's on it for a badder look. Now as time progresses I'm trying to decide if I want to buy a decent cap so i can plan some camping/surf trips to places I normally wouldn't be able to go (stay) for free, or if I should just buy a nice toolbox to keep the things i want kept nice and dry in there. Keep in mind I drive a regular cab with no room behind my two front seats. My tonneau cover was basically destroyed this winter so i'm hoping to use my tax return money on my truck. Ugh i'm so undecided on this topic. Please any input?!:-D

PS: just looking for anyone opinions on this, you don't need to own either... but if you have an opinion on either it would be great. so far my friends say cap because of the space and fact that you can take it off easily. girls say no cap because it reminds them of fifty year old men! need help :(

I am a fan of both personally. The tonneau cover because you can protect everything in your bed, and the box because you can still utilize the bed of your truck without locking it shut or taking off the cover. I myself am going to buy a low profile box mainly because i dont want to have to take the cover off to haul stuff.

i'm not sure if you missed the point? i'm trying to decide to get a truck tool box that goes across behind the back window or a truck cap that would almost make it look like a SUV...ya know what i mean? like a leer cap...

Dont like the caps, too restrictive for me, I have a folding cover and a heavy duty storage tote bungeed to the fender well for my tools, rope, straps etc. best of two worlds..

Love my cap and bedrug, hated my bedcover, and they don't all look like they are for 50 yr old men. Only advise i can give is get one with the full side windows, allows much better visibilty for changing lanes and backing up.

Both have their advantages. I have both. Currently, the toolbox is stored under the deck of my house.

I previously had an aluminum cap and thought it great. It was light enough that I could put it on and take it off by myself. I now have a 'glass cap and its too heavy to handle easily by myself. To me that limits its ability to put on and take off. Also, either one is likely going to have sealant foam or something to seal between bed and cap. This can only be reused effectively so many times. I guess I would really say to not plan on taking it on and off every week.

The toolbox and the cap give you the capability to lock stuff up. How big is the stuff you want to lock up?

If you will only occasionally use the cap for camping/surfing, it might be worthwhile to get the bed tent instead.

The toolbox gives you more usable room for "truck" things but lacks security for big stuff (although you can lock stuff to it or mount it on outside of the box).

Another thought on cap. If you're getting one and have the option, certainly consider "windoors" where the side window opens like a lift gate. This avoids the issue of stuff is at the front of the bed and having to crawl in to get at it.

How big is your board? Could you lock it inside a cap? A cap also can be had with Thule racks built in for an easier mounting.

Really boils down to how you'll use it.
