Hey guys,

So I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado, z85 ls, 3.5L 5cyl. It has 219,700 miles, of which I have put 160,000 on. I know pretty much every nook and cranny of this truck. Here is my dilemma, I have a passlock/ignition issue. Here is what it does:
1. Get in the truck
2. Stick the key in
3. Without even turning the key, the truck tries to crank, sometimes 2-3 times
4. Take key out
5. Passlock light comes on
6. Wait 10 minutes and then crank

Those steps happen about once a week. These steps happen every other day

1. GEt in the truck
2. Put the key in and turn over to crank
3. Starter engages, but engine will not fire
4. Passlock comes on
5. Wait 10 minutes and then crank

I took it to the Chevy dealership and they ran all the codes and said "nothing is wrong with it!"
I call Chevrolet, they escalate the problem to some vice president of technical issues. They call me back and say "take it to a dealer."

So I have decided to fix it myself. My thought is to replace the ignition lock cylinder, with new keys, and the ignition switch. Im thinking that is where my problem lies.

Also, I have tried cutting the blue/white wire. It did not work. It made my truck not be able to even start, let alone crank, so I had to reconnect it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am unsure of where to purchase the right ignition lock cylinder, and I also have heard that you have to take the steering wheel off to be able to get to the ignition switch.

Thanks for the help!

From the description it seems to be a problem in the ignition switch. The ignition switch can be replaced separately and is just a matter of removing two screws and the connector. You don't have to mess with the steering wheel or the lock cylinder. The problem is that the switch can not be purchased separate from the housing assembly.

These links should provide some information. The first one doesn't address the problem that you are having, but it will show the switch and has replacement info.

If you decide to replace the switch, follow the Relearn steps exactly.

It worked! Thank you for your help with this, cart. I would say that this is the correct fix for many of the passlock issues. Here is what I did:
1. Unhooked battery for 30 mins
2. Took of the steering cover
3. Removed the ignition switch
4. Installed new ignition switch
5. Reconnected battery
6. Installed the key and ran through the relearn security cycles (it took 4 cycles before it cranked)

The passlock light used to always stay on even after it cranked, but now it doesn't. Thanks guys! I have 1 more issue with the truck that I need to fix, that I will post later tonight.

I tried this having a similar issue. The truck would crank over but would not fire unless I held the key in the start position. I replaced the sensor you are talking about, without disconnecting the battery, and once the new switch was in the truck now ceases to even crank at all. When you were going through the security cycles was the engine at least cranking over while you were going through the steps, or did it only crank on your 4th try?

This is what I did with my passlock, when it happened out of town, there’s 2 dark blue wires on that plugs into the bcm one coming from the ignition into the bcm and one leaving the bcm and going to the fuse block, place a jumper wire in between and Yahweh truck will fire up like normal and you won’t have the light, but that’s me, my bcm is toast from a leaky windshield

Just wanted to add my experience since some others may buy used trucks as me. I bought a used 2007 Colorodo Crew Cab 5Cyl. I have experienced this issue so I decided to replace the PassLock Sensor. You need to buy this part below. You don't need to replace the whole cylinder part, just remove the black plastic part(Passlock Sensor) out and install it on your car. To remove the failed passlock sensor, put the key in and move to acc level(the second one) then remove the screws from the plastic black part and it will slide out. On the new part, you will need a flat screw driver to function as the key. Inside the gray metal cylinder, you will see an small slot. Insert the screw driver and turn in as you would do when turning a key to the access level. Be gentile. Then remove the screws and the new passlock sensor will come out. Install it on your car and follow the Relearn steps exactly. Mine worked fine for about 2 months and then did the issue again... but hours later my battery died so it was a bad battery. Replaced it, and it has not happened again for more than a month.

I am going through a similar issue with my 2008 canyon 5 cylinder 4x4. A few months ago it just wouldn’t start. It wasn’t turning over at all. Just making clicking noises. I got it towed to a shop and had the wire harness replaced and the PCM. Mechanic said it was fixed and I went a bout a mile away from the shop stopped for gas and then the same thing happens. I got it towed home because this mechanic had my truck for 3 months and tried to fix the problem 3 times. My friend came over today to help me and I went to let him hear the clicking sounds then it fired up. I went for a test drive when I got home I shut it off and went to restart it. It went click then started. **** it down again and restarted and it went click click then started. **** it down then tried to start again and it just clicked away and wouldn’t start. About an hour later I went out to start it and it fired up just fine. The problem keeps happening and I can’t just keep dropping money on a mechanic that shows no results. I see what everyone is saying on here but I just need some direction. Where should I start? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

GMC Passlock Issue (Fix) I spent several months dealing with constant starting issues due to the Passlock security causing the 10-minute lockout on my 2012 GMC Canyon. I used the 9 to 5 technique to bypass the lockout. I never had issue starting using the 9 to 5, but it didn't fix the problem just postponed the repair. When my wife and daughter borrowed, they always found a way to trigger the lockout again. (9 to 5 technique - Once you get in truck, leave door open, insert key and turn 1 click and wait for 9 fast beeps, then turn 1 more click and wait for 5 slow beeps. Once the 5 slow beeps are done start engine.) I sprayed a can of CRC QD Electronic Cleaner into the key slot, then sprayed compressed air and noticed a black and grey coloration when i wiped dry. I repeated the steps a few more times till the spray was clear. I sprayed the key down and wiped dry as well. I have not had a single Passlock issue over the last 4 months. I tried duplicating everything that seemed to trigger the Passlock issue. I have not had any issues with starting for over 200 engine starts now. CRC QD Electronic Cleaner Can of compressed air. I hope this helps others.
