I gave my cyber grey Canyon a black lip...thoughts?

I'm not a huge fan of chrome on vehicles, and frankly I feel like GM's truck department would rather have their entire truck line offered in only one color; "EMBODIMENT OF CHROME!!" (I've confirmed this through inside sources). So after some inspiration from various forum member's adventures in Plasti-dipp'n, I went to work on the big chrome piece on the lower part of my A/T's grille.

Once I figure out where that frick'n roll of painters tape went that I KNOW I bought when I painted my living room, I'm going to take care of the chrome trim on the doors as well.

The chrome bars on the grille piece around the GMC logo though....still on the fence as I'm not sold on the full murdered out look just yet. Thoughts?

I like what you have done, not sure I would take blacken the grille itself.

Like it.
I was working to vinyl wrap it with a brushed stainless.
After a test, I pulled it off. Until I am able to change the grille, I didn't like the dual tone portion.

Are you planning on changing the grill color too?

At this point no. I'm starting to agree with Jaw that the chrome bars leave enough contrast against the dark paint and flow with the shiny lights enough that getting rid of them might be too much. However, the beauty of plasti-dip is I can always just try it and if I don't like it, peel it off!

The trim pieces on the doors though have to go black....looks really out of place from the side to me.

I think the chrome skid plate on these trucks is kind of silly. I thought about doing the same thing to mine that you've done. Looks good.

Yeah I really like the new all terrain Sierras. That Denali looks terrible with all that chrome.

I think it is part of the whole front grille piece but I could be wrong...and if you did nothing else but take it off, it would leave a huge weirdo gap. If it is a separate piece though...I bet you'll see guys installing giant bull bars with winches in them before too long and I bet you could grab it from them on the cheap!

I first want to say I love what you have done. I think it looks great! I agree that leaving the chrome grill the way it is the right thing to do.
I know nothing about plasti-dip and would like to learn a little more. I like that if you get tired of it you can peel it off. I'm wondering how does plasti-dip hold up against road debris like rocks? What prep work did you have to do the piece you painted besides masking off the area you didn't want plasti-dip to get on?
Plasti-dip is amazing:

1. https://www.dipyourcar.com/ has a ton of videos and tutorials on how to plasti-dip various parts of your car. You can also buy really rare colors and types of plasti-dip from them but it's kind of pricey. Otherwise Home Depot/Lowes/etc. carries black and maybe some other basic colors for around 7-8$ a can.

2. It will hold up pretty well if you apply it correctly. I sprayed parts of my grille on my Saab 9-2x Aero and it lasted two winters without a chip. People dip their wheels a lot too and for the most part they hold up really well. Again, I think you just have to apply it right and don't get too rowdy when you clean it. And if it does chip...I think you can throw another coat over top or just start over. Hard to mess it up....

3. Prep is easy....just clean it really really well. Using little alcohol pads before you apply it is the recommended method, but I can never find those things so I just wash and dry it really well. But you DON'T need to scratch up the surface or sand it at all...that would defeat the purpose of the product. The biggest thing is how you apply it. You want to do multiple LIGHT coats. For my grill I did four coats...first two super light...third and fourth just a bit heavier. I wait like 15-20min in between coats. It will be a lot more durable and look a lot better if you build it up slowly instead of just blasting one or two coats on. Just remember...if you screw up...start over! In terms of masking off areas, I really only mask off big areas around it and peal off any over spray. Masking just makes it easier. In the videos on dipyourcar.com, you'll see that for things like badges or lettering, you just spray the whole area and use a toothpick or whatever to get out the parts around it. I also did it that way on my Saab.

Go get a few cans and try it out...you won't regret it!

I thought the All Terrains had body color door handles? One of the reasons I was looking at the SLE with the A/T Package, because I didn't want the chrome on the SLT trim. I really like what you did with the transfer case. I'm in the market right now and thinking about the Cyber Grey myself, with future plans to add black wheels and trim pieces.

The A/T does have body colored door handles. The only chrome pieces are on the grille and then there are little thin strips of it under the windows. You can see both in these pictures of my truck:

AtomicTree, Thank you for the info about plasti-dip. One of my next questions was going to be where do I buy it, but you answered my question when you mentioned picking up cans of it at Home Depot / Lowe's. It's funny I noticed that on the front of your Canyon you don't have a license plate bracket. Your state must not require two license plates on your vehicles.

I also have a cyber grey A/T and have thought about plasti dipping the bottom section on each of the 3 bars on my grill to try and give it the all terrain grill look. So the it would alternate chrome and black leaving three thin chrome bars showing. Can anyone photoshop what I'm describing to see what it looks like? Thamks
