Denali "Noise & Vibration Package" (Not included on AT4)

I reached out to two dealerships to inquire about the differences in cabin noise between the AT4 and the Denali. They both told me the only difference was the tires. I then reached out to GM Canada Customer Care directly, and they gave me a very different answer:

"The GMC Canyon AT4 and Denali trims share the same program architecture, but will have slightly different suspension tuning. The Denali trim has an additional noise and vibration package above the AT4 noise, vibration and harshness standard content that includes acoustic side glass and windshield.

We do suggest that you discuss tire choices with your preferred GMC dealership personnel as tire construction can influence the noise, ride and handling of a vehicle. It is also recommended that above all, you test drive both trim levels to determine which best suits your needs."

This is the first I've heard of the noise and vibration package which includes acoustic side glass and windshield. This is not listed anywhere in the specs on GMs website (that I've noticed). I haven’t heard this mentioned on the forum or any YouTube videos. Why wouldn't GM advertise this if it was a feature included on the Denali package? This would make me lean more towards the Denali trim. Now I'm confused and don't know who to believe.

Has anyone heard of this before?

I test drove an AT4, a Toyota Tacoma Limited and a Denali. I thought the Denali was the quietest of the bunch, so that was one reason I went with it, though the others weren’t terrible. After 2500+ miles, I haven’t noticed one bit of rattle, and wind and tire noise are very minimal. We also have a Volvo XC90, which is a really nice vehicle, but I honestly think this truck is quieter than the Volvo.

It’s subjective though. 😊

I remember hearing back in the day that the GMCs had additional sound deadening compared to the Chevys (think dynamat), but I've never heard of the Denalis having additional deadening, but I could see it, or maybe a thicker mat.

I have the same question, yellarcat. Custom Glass Solutions says “Acoustic glass is made by laminating two pieces of glass together with a sound-blocking PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) membrane. The membrane absorbs high-frequency sound waves so they are not transmitted through the glass into the vehicle cab. If you want a quieter ride, then you’ll reap the benefits of acoustic glass.” Who woulda’ thunk?

My next question is do I have acoustic glass in my 2022? I looked in my owner’s manual but I couldn’t find anything. I want some of that very cool quiet glass too! 😂 It’s a lot like some guns I own. One day I don’t know it exists, the next day I can’t live without it!

Acoustic glas has been used for a good while in a number of GM vehicles.

It started at Cadillac turn Buick and other Denali models. It is not always marketed. Same on noise canceling. Many models may have while others don’t.
GM may add it to a 4 cylinder model but not a V6. Also our Terrain did not gave mouse csn long due to the V6 but they replaced it with a sub woofer.

Okay, okay, all of that stuff is all well and good but does my 2022 Denali have the very cool quiet glass or not? 😁

I don't believe it came till the new body style. It is not that big of a deal.

Most of this went into CUV and SUV models with 4 cylinders. They tried to tame the noise in the cars to be like the V6 and V8 models.

They also used more insulation on some fire walls with noise cancellation.

But then Cadillac pumps in fake engine noise in the audio system because they isolated the engine so much and it is not a V8. No one is happy..

Maybe I misread their email. I'll paste it here again:

"The Denali trim has an additional noise and vibration package above the AT4 noise, vibration and harshness standard content that includes acoustic side glass and windshield."

Maybe she is saying that the standard content on the AT4 includes the acoustic side glass and windshield, but the Denali has an additional noise and vibration package above the standard content. I'd like to know exactly what is included in this additional package...

Lol, marketing speak. Says that the Denali has acoustic windshield and side glass, but they are careful NOT to say that the AT4 doesn't have it.
Eh, who knows.

Most OEM glass for N/A manufacturers will have acoustic properties.
There's a reason an OEM spec windshield is more expensive even with the same installer and it isn't due to safety or durability.
Usually quickly noticeable if you replace your factory glass with a knockoff.
Highly doubtful different trim levels have different glass. Additional insulation is most likely IMO

For most human hearing... the threshold for a noticeable change in sound is around 2 dB. So it would be "noticeable" technically.

just think about all those people that had wind noise coming from their windshield and had the dealer "fix" it by having another company install a new windshield, my guess is all 3 parties didn't know about this "acoustic glass" so a regular "loud" glass was installed so now its louder in their truck.

Well, then they won't hear the wind noise, so problem solved. 😆

For warranty purposes, the dealer is required to get the proper windshield from GM. When we have replaced windshields under warranty, our parts department orders the glass from GM using the VIN, the glass is actually ships to the dealer directly from the glass manufacturer, and we sublet a local installer to do the replacement.
So, if the dealer is following the proper procedures, you should have the correct glass installed.

Some things to check: For the side glass, it may be laminated to help with noise. Roll down the window part way and look at the edge. You'll see the three layers with the plastic in the center; For all glass, you may see a notation within the information contained on the label.
Another acoustic technique for side glass is to simply make it thicker, although automakers tend to avoid this as glass is heavy enough already.

Wahoo! Praise GMC! Using hyperv6’s guidance and link it seems that I do indeed have the coveted acoustic glass windshield and side glass. Thank you, GMC gods for blessing me with silence. Now, the funny part is…. I’m seventy-one years old, been shooting since I was six (under my Dad’s supervision, of course), had many motorcycles, outboard boats, convertibles too, rock concerts, was a jet engine mechanic, operator at a liquid natural gas receiving terminal, operator at a nuclear power plant. Basically I check all off all of the boxes when filling out the paperwork for my hearing test. If I need to shave off a few decibels from my interior cab environment all I really need to do is turn off my hearing aids! 🤣

There is only one part for the front driver/passenger glass and windshield, they are all the same. I checked this after posting.

Waiting to hear back from GM Customer Care to enlighten me on what is actually included in this additional "noise and vibration" package, which is apparently only on the Denali.

I spoke with three dealerships and they all told me the same thing: they've never heard of this before.
