DEF crystal build up?

Hey all,

I was wondering if any of you are seeing this same weird behavior that I am. I've only had to fill the engine with fuel 3 times now. (Only 1250 miles on the truck so far).

The first time there was excessive urea crystal buildup around the DEF Cap. I washed the area with water and wiped the area clean. The second time no crystal build up. Just tonight, went to fill the fuel tank and opened the fuel door and there is some crystal buildup.

I cannot fathom how this is happening. The tube that the DEF would flow down doesn't appear to have excess DEF there. The cap is tight. I took it off to double check and then turned it until it clicked.

I just want to be sure that there's nothing else wrong. I haven't noticed any wet spots where I normally park in the garage and at work, no white crystal build up on the ground.

Thoughts?

I responded in the other thread but yeah. We'll see how it goes on the next fill up though.

I know if it's as bad as it was the first time, I'm gonna have to see if there is a better way to seal that cap.

You've done the most obvious thing which is to check the tightness of the cap, but the cap can also be not fully seated. There is a white Teflon type material in the back of the cap acting as a seal, that could be your problem for some minor leakage. If this is the case, have the dealer replace it.

Had the same problem with my truck, was going to take it to the dealer but decide to take a closer look myself. Even though the cap 'clicked' I was having leaking from around the cap, upon a close examination I found that the rubber membrane around the caps didn't look quite right. The rubber was pushed up around the Def cap so it would click, but not actually seal proper... pushed the rubber back in place with my bare hands and have never had a problem since. It was driving me crazy till I figured it out.

I will check that out! If you can, can you post a picture of what it looks like "fixed"

To supermod, yea I read the first link it just kinda stopped discussion with no real discussion as to the cause and solution. I believe that first guys was literally just too much in the tank.

Just another perspective on it is all, from this thread and the previous.

I don't know enough about it to know if all experiences are the same and just trying to direct everybody to other discussions for their own knowledge, etc. Including my own.

I didn't see any rubber piece inside the cap. And since DEF is predominantly water, the buildup of dried fluid hasn't been a big deal to me.

So I checked out my stuff and I don't see anything different that you pictured

and nothing pictured above is rubber or rubbery

inside the cap

you can see the flimsy little white cap liner that appears to be the "seal"...like I said before it's an even crappier version of a soda bottle cap seal. the indentation ring is apparently where it sealed before or is supposed to seal but there was a lot of moisture on the lid today when I took these and I just filled it last Friday.

If y'all have a rubber seal please post pics because I see nothing.

Also when I tightened the cap this time tightened by the handle and then thought to tighten from the base too and sure enough I was able to tighten about 1/8th turn more after the handle started clicking. I'm wondering if the "clicks" are too soft and not allowing the cap to fully tighten, thus the seal not making good contact with the end of the fill tube???

If the moisture/crystals continue I may cut a circle out of viton and fit into the cap to take up space and make a tighter seal on the end of the tube.

Just the rubber membrane covering the whole inside of the fillup area around the 2 spouts... note: fixing this membrane did nothing to prevent the build up of dried def in the treads of the Def cap; my situation was much more drastic than this as the whole side of the truck was covered in def fluid before fixing the membrane. The cap Iqdchkn pictured is identical to mine and agree that the cap seal is junk. Hope this clears up my previous posts for ya's :)

Ahhhh ok gotcha, I thought you had something that solved the issue.

Try turning the cap at the base (the area behind the tether ring) and see if it gets any tighter than the handle clicks let it get.

Nice. Will pick up a neoprene washer at my local HD.

Installed the rubber washer today. In lieu of trimming it, I took the cap apart and put the washer under the rubber o ring and snapped the black plastic threaded piece back into the outer cap.

Since installing the rubber washer I have experienced zero leakage. With all due respect to our SoCal members whom know best.

Just don't trim it too small. I think I might have gotten mine a little short and the last time I took the cap off it stuck to the filler and I was worried it might fall in :(

I may need to do like ssgjurista and take the thing apart and reorder it. Do you happen to remember how you did that? Any pics by chance?

So I went to fill with DEF and the top of the cap just spun off in my hand, like a childproof pill bottle. Got to break out the channel locks to get the base threaded part off. Anybody else have this happen? not an expensive fix but pretty lame at 39k miles. Never really get any buildup that makes me think leakage, no real crust on the outside, just when i remove the cap i see some on the threads. I live where its pretty cold in the winter, but didnt think this little guy would fail.

How is the washer fix holding up for everyone?

Stuck DEF tank cap

Have a stuck DEF tank cap. Anyone have this issue? Backstory, had my 2016 Crewcab LT Diesel in for check engine light a few months back, after much testing turns out it was bad gas. Suspect when they were doing diagnostics at dealer they cranked the cap down because I have not added any DEF since before that time. Thanks for any suggestion. Figure I probably will take to dealer...
