For all your people in the rust belt out there... any typical 2nd gen Colorado/Canyon rust spots? OEM Fender flares, rocker panels, wheel wells, frame, etc? Just want to be sure I get ahead of the game before winter sets in on my new to me 2021 Canyon.

Check this, easy to get to

back of front wheels wells, take the piece of plastic off and move the fender well cover back, might have to remove a couple screws, a known place for leaves and debris to collect, the fall down from the corner of the windshield,
some people have been creative and making a mesh piece upp to to stop the leaves from falling down there. I did this, and the wifie was doing something and pulled them out, brought them into the house and asked "What are these"? Wimmen

Yep, all those little nooks/crannies around doors, fender wells & tailgate. I keep quite a few of those free Harbor Freight micro-fiber cloths under rear seat storage & use after every wash. You'd be surprised how much crap gets lodged in these areas from wash-to-wash.

I might try the Woolwax treatment - there's a place here in Omaha that applies. They're treating streets w/ so much salt/brine/sand it's hard to fend off rust. >.<

Thanks guys! My plan before the winter is to remove the access plugs in the bed and rocker panels and also remove the door panels. I'll also remove the wheel well liners. Here is my general rust-preventative process that has worked great for me on other cars:

  1. I'll wash it all out with POR-15's Cleaner/Degreaser. This stuff works great and is water based. Then rinse it out with water. Really gets rid of grime and dirt.
  2. Spray the cavities liberally with POR-15's Metal Prep. It is a zinc-phosphate wash and if there is bare metal or rust it etches it and neutralizes it. Perfectly safe for paint. Hose it out and blow some compressed air in there to get rid of any excess water. Let it dry overnight.
  3. Spray the cavities with Noxudol 700 Cavity Wax. It is a lightweight creeping wax that wicks into cavities and creases. Unlike wool/lanolin based products it has rust preventative and rust conversion properties.
  4. Spray underneath the truck with Noxudol 300. This is more of a heavy weight rust preventative wax. Similar in weight to Woolwax or Cosmoline but again has chemicals that treat and prevent rust...not just displace water.
