My brothers Ford F150 would die overnight. Charge or jump it and it started right up and charged to 100% I had him drop it off at my house. Left the hood open overnight and went out at 5am and checked the engine. I laser temp. the alternator at 190degF after the truck being shut off all night. At some point during the night the diode in his alternator was going out and letting the battery drain into the alternator coils. Any chance any of you have looked at something like this? That voltage is going somewhere. If everything is off, something in that truck will be smoking hot.

I dropped off my 2023 Colorado Z71 at my dealer this morning. It was finally time for an oil change. I had my service guy check my VIN for these two Service Updates. (January 2024 Battery Drain OTA Issue - Service Update N232425820, or the 2023 Battery Drain OTA Issue - Service Update N232411313). Their system did not show they were applicable to my Colorado, but I convinced him to apply them anyway as the symptoms they address are present and have been since the truck was six weeks old. I’m hopeful that both can be applied successfully and that my VIN not showing up in their system doesn’t prevent them being applied. I went for several months in late 2023 with no dead battery, but my adaptive cruise shows unavailable about 25% of the time and my Auto On/Off never turns the truck off. I’ve had two dead batteries in 2024, one on January 23 and another on April 15. Both times I had to drive around to clear the check engine light after the jump start, and it took 3 or 4 off and on cycles to clear the check engine light. My Chevy app shows no updates being applied since April 2023 when my truck was still sitting at the factory in Wentzville. Has any one else had any success getting the dead battery issue permanently fixed?

My battery has not gone dead, but it has been flagged for " maintenance " in every one of my one star reports since day one. (I only have had my truck since Feb 2nd). No long drives, so I don't know about cruise control, but my auto stop has never worked.
Bringing it in this coming Thursday for the first time for the cowel, battery and a drl recall fix (no other recalls listed)
If my auto stop starts working, I'll know it was indeed the battery, so then I might ask for the other updates.

Knock on wood, I have not had any new battery issues since the '23 update for the SDGM. In fact no issues at all since then, except I still don't have the trailer guideline. I rolled 12K miles just this morning.

After the visit to the dealer last week, I have not had a dead battery issue YET! But it has only been 3 days. However, my Auto On/Off still never turns off, and I've tested it with no AC on, so clearly that is still a problem. Out of three trips out of my garage, the Adaptive Cruise worked on 2 of the 3 trips. Road and weather conditions were good so there is still a bug in that module. I'm taking it back in in a coule of weeks after I'm done with some travels, and having them focus specifically on those two issues. During this past visit, all they did was apply the (January 2024 Battery Drain OTA Issue - Service Update N232425820, and the 2023 Battery Drain OTA Issue - Service Update N232411313). I just came across this other bulletin (#PIT6042B) in the blog today, so I'll point it out to my service guy.

Interesting, I thought maybe it was a combination of "battery maintenance" listed in my report + heat being on that made mine non functional. Just asked our other guy with his Trail Boss and his works, even with the heat on. I'll know more when the swap batteries this Thursday.

Having just purchased my ZR2 this concerns me because I recently got rid of a 21' Jeep Rubicon because of their abysmal charging system. Everyday a new sensor was going off. I generally look for vehicles that have as little technology as possible but decided to try my luck with the ZR2. So far it has been great but I have only had it a week.
One thing I cannot tolerate are electrical issues, because they are impossible to identify and dealers dont want to spend a lot of time troubleshooting them.
My Jeep had 2 batteries. One was an auxiliary battery for the stupid start/stop and the other was the main. I haven't researched but does anyone know if the Colorados are the same way. Please tell me no.

I just don't think batteries can handle the chronic systems checks these things do seemingly even when they are shut off.

Well you are going to have to go back to around 2010 for models with little technology
Smart Charging has been around around that long

Only one battery in the Colorado and Canyon.

But more tech and software based gadgets than the Jeep.

Well they said they did some update to it a while back. Truck died again about 3 1/2 weeks later. Jumped it then started fine the rest of the week. Had to go out of town and came back to a dead truck again. Battery completely dead as tried to jump with a family members vehicle but wouldn’t start. Stuff turned on but soon as I tried to start it, nothing. Also, once we disconnected the battery from the other vehicle the voltage went straight down to 0 and everything turned off.

had the dealer say the same thing to me that the battery was good even after it died and there was no problems. only to have it happen again 2 weeks later and they finally replaced the battery. they dont know what is drawing power from the battery once the car is shut off.
Has the new battery been fine? Did it happen again with the new one?

Since my service visit in late April, I have not had a dead battery issue yet. I am taking the truck back in this coming Thursday and having them focus solely on the adaptive cruise control which still doesn’t work about 25% of the time with perfect road conditions and perfect weather, and on the auto on/off which hasn’t worked in months.

Is your Truck sitting for extended periods of time?
Is your truck getting at least a 20 minute run time (driving preferred) after most starts?
How many times has the Battery basicly been completely Dead?

gherbert - my 2023 Z71 has had the dead battery issue 6 times from June 2023 to April 2024. It has died overnight after driving the previous day, and other times went for days, weeks or months. The first time it ocuurred it had been in the garage for 5 or 6 days without being started. From Sept. 22, 2023 through November 12, 2023 I traveled every week for 3 to 4 days so it sat without being driven and during that time it never died. This issue has nothing to do with the battery or charging system, but is the result of an OTA (over the air update) Chevy pushes out and the update hangs up and levaes the process active and thus it drains the battery. In my case, there is nowhere that I can verify that an update ocurred immediately before the battery is found dead. When I check the update history in the Chevy App it only lists two updates both of which ocurred before the truck left the factory in May 2023. Hopefully the two service updates I had them perform have in fact fixed the problem. Only time will tell.

Has your Battery been replaced yet?
If you have had 6 Daed Episodes on that Battery
It is going to be harder and harder for it to actually take a full charge

like the other user mentioned it happens randomly. Would be driven the day before then just dead the next day. Then good for a week then sat for 2-3 days then dead. Had to buy a new battery today to get back to my home state. Have the old battery to take to the dealer to have them refund me for what I bought.

1) How many times has your Battery been daed?
(if a battery dies too many times... it will stop taking a full charge)
2) Is your truck getting at least a 20 minute run time (driving preferred) after most starts?

Yes. there has been the OTA Update Issue, ehich have caused Dead Batteries
But, a battery must also be regularly chagered.
If that is not happening
A Battery Maintainer is an item that is needed
Modern Vehicles use more power and have more power drain

Figured I would just update.
No real battery issue for starting, it has shown up as a maintenance issue on my onstar report, only symptom is auto start/stop not working.
Brought it to dealer, mentioned above, battery tested fine, but did some update for a parasitic draw. After a good drive, auto stop is now functional.
I do drive a lot less, maybe one or two times a week lately (over 20 minutes), so still thinking of hardwiring a battery tender.
