Hello fellas,

I’m looking into changing the Silver Colorado emblems for the Black ones. Has anyone done this? How hard is changing out the emblems?

Do you mean the Colorado lettering? Have you looked at plastidip? About $5 a can and very easy to do.

If you do want to remove emblems, it's pretty easy. Heat them up (I use a heat gun, but be careful. A hair dryer will work, but slower) to loosen the adhesive. The use a piece of fishing line to slide behind the emblem and release it. You can use it like a saw to separate the adhesive foam tape and the emblem. Once removed, you can clean the adhesive residue with goo gone or similar product.

Placing new emblems is a peel and stick process.

You could go with a overlay decal set.

PlastDip is a cheaper, easy and flexible way to turn the chrome black. That can be done while the emblems are still on the vehicle. If however you’re looking to purchase black ones, it’ll be more expensive but replacing them is fairly straightforward as mentioned. The one of the grill can be removed by removing the screws along the top of the grill. It will bend out far enough to get your hand and forearm in there to push the tabs out. It just pops back in.

Mechanic at the Chevy dealer did mine by taking a plastic prybar and popping the front Bowtie out. Took less than 1 second and took nothing apart. Of course he knew precisely where to pry. There are Youtubes on how to do all the badges and emblems on the truck but I did not see one with the plastic pry bar. The back emblem was on crooked from the factory. They were fixing it and I asked if I could pay the difference and get the black emblems. They gave them to me ... free with every $42,000 purchase.

How do you go about plastidiping the Colorado lettering while it’s still on the truck?

I taped off a rectangle around the area. Painted the entire area then took a toothpick and removed the excess. It peels off easily. DipYourCar sells a removal tool that probably would have made it easier.

Plasti dip emblems
Here’s an example of how to do the emblems. I used a toothpick to get the small pieces off. I’ve had this on mine for 3 months and still hasn’t come off.

Here's how I did it on another car. Just mask off the area with painter's tape and some newspaper.
Sprayed 4 thin coats of Plasti-Dip . . waited 20 minutes between coats.
Then took a pointed Exacto blade and scored the inner groove around the center bow tie. Easily peeled the excess Plasti_Dip off.
I did the same on my 2017 Colorado.

How long does the plastidip usually stay on there?

It's pretty darn durable. I did my emblems almost 2 years ago. There is no visible deterioration. For high wear areas like wheels, I might expect to redo it at some point. For emblems, I view it as a one time job. It costs $5 to try it.

these are cool--I've used them and they are different vs. the all black look.

Really easy to do. Use the 3m wheel with your drill to get the gummy residue off. Use the braided line to saw through the old chrome emblems. I wrapped the line around two old batteries to save my fingers. The wheel is much easier and faster than the goo gone. There are YouTube videos on this. Each Colorado emblem is in foam and you can use painters tape to mark it off before you remove the old emblems. Just make sure truck is completely clean and dry before applying black emblems. I used rubbing alcohol to clean area and let it dry. No problems. Looks great. Maybe I’ll post pics later.

(Edit: I guess I'm not sure if you meant the bow tie or the letters, anyway, this is about the bow tie)

I did mine, they are anodized aluminum (Amazon Link), so they have more of a shiny finish than the plastidip will. The original factory front emblem is attached by some clips, though they are huge pain to get to and undo. The back emblem is a little bit more nerve wracking. You have to drill through the emblem to release the clips holding it on (see image below). The package came with a template so you know where to drill.

The new emblems are held on by 3M double sided sticky tape (at least the rear one is, I can't remember for sure on the front). It's only been about 8 months since I installed, so I can't speak to the longevity of the tape (so far so good).

Overall, I'm super happy with how they look.

Thank you for this post.
This is the way I went to overlay my chrome 'Colorado' lettering with a matte black decal overlay. I love them and so do the people I've asked about the look. The customer service at TVDvinyldecals is fantastic. I have an ongoing email string with at salesman there as I want them to make a ZR2 decal overlay for my grill emblem. To me ... the emblem blends in the with the grill and I wanted some contrasting color options. If you're a ZR2 owner and want some emblem overlay options please write to them at
Fantastic folks with a really great product and inexpensive enough to experiment with. They get enough requests and they will add it to their product line. Bet the Z71 folks can make a request too.
Extremely easy to apply. The tailgate emblem comes with both the V6 and LT overlay.

I'll let you know. I live in Central Florida and we all know how hot it is here not to mention the saw grass and sand that I'll be spraying on them. I can say this ... they give you a practice letter. It was extremely tough to remove. The website says a 7 year durability rating. Time will tell.
