In my 20+ years of driving I have NEVER had a pump fail to shut off when the tank filled. Since I've had my diesel (maybe 1 1/2 months) it's happened twice. Most recently, I knew the tank was super low. I filled it quickly till it took 19 gallons then stopped pumping to allow the foam to settle. I then slowly continued to fill. It took 23.13 gallons when the diesel frothed out the fill pipe.

Does auto shut off frequently fail on diesel pumps?

I'm starting to think so, too. It seems the pumps are far less maintained than gasoline.

20 years driving, only two gasoline pumps have failed to autostop.
3000 miles driving the truck, and it's happened twice to me, also.

Yup, 2x for me also. Only have filled the tank 5x since we got it. 2 out of 5 is bad IMHO. Also have had the issue with ONLY the big-rig nozzle avail that does NOT fit into my tank fill hole, at fill up time, so I had to pump it uber slow while trying to maintain a good seal by holding the metal nozzle end against the tank fill hole. Aggravating & messy to say the least.

The auto shut-off doesn't work if the flow is too low to trigger it, this isn't a problem with the pump, your tank, or the fill nozzle. It's you filling the tank so slowly in order to fill the tank and filler neck completely full that is causing this to happen. Did you used to use this same method to fill gasoline vehicles? I hope not. This will damage the vapor recovery system on many gasoline vehicles.

This is also a reason gas stations say not to "top off."

Fill it "properly" and you won't make a mess or else learn the sound of a filling/full filler neck so you know when to stop filling before it becomes overfilled.

I'm not entirely sure I'm on board with that. The first overfill I had the handle on with the fill lock down on full fill speed

The only time in nearly 30k miles that I’ve spilled fuel was when I was topping off too slowly and wasn’t paying attention so I know it happens from experience. [emoji51]

Filling up at the big rig pumps you have to be very careful as well due to the flow rate and building too much pressure which can lead to fuel burping back out.
