The Journey of my '23 Z71

Hope this okay to put here, but I just wanted a place to document my Z71 and the mods I do to it. It won't be much in the grand scheme of things, just a few things to make it easier to live with and protect it a bit, but nevertheless, I wanted to be able to track what I do to it, the maintenance of it, and how it holds up.

To start, it's a CPO '23 Z71 in Harvest Bronze Metallic w/ the Jet Black / Adrenline Red interior. I purchased it 8/4/25 w/ 17k miles. 310hp/390tq. Factory options as follows:
  1. Z71 CONVENIENCE PACKAGE II
  2. WHEELS, 20", DARK ANDROID ALUMINUM
  3. ADVANCED TRAILERING PACKAGE
  4. SAFETY PACKAGE
It's my daily driver. I traded in my car and sold my '94 Ranger, so this is now my only vehicle (not counting my '90 Miata) that I will drive every day. I usually average 25-30k miles a year (my daily commute for work is 85 miles round trip) so I'm hoping for a long life out of this truck.

I've only done a couple of minor things to it so far, a 2.5" antenna and a WeatherTech Hood Protector and No Drill Mud Flaps (still in route). It came with a tonneau cover (made by Truxedo, I think). I do plan on towing w/ it a bit, as I have an old Ford 8N tractor that I take to local county fairs and shows, as well as lugging home 4000 pounds of Enviro Bricks each fall to help keep warm the following winter.

--EDIT--

There are a couple of things I'm gonna have the stealer look at when I take it back in next week - the speed limit sign indicator on the dash stopped showing the speed, just shows '--' now, and the auto high beams don't work. So those will both be looked at when I take it in. I also purchased new cowl pieces from Chevy ($18 for both) and I'll get those replaced in the next few days.

--EDIT 2--

Corrected torque figure and spelling! D'oh!

The speed sign is an easy one. If your not using Onstar data you need to hook it to home wifi or cell phone hotspot and download the offline version of Google Maps. Then make sure the speed limit sign is turned on in settings.

Also the auto high beams will not work if you turn the fog lights on

#3 ·
I have 30 days of OnStar free, and the speed limit indicator was working, but stopped 2 days ago. Not that big of a deal as I'll just turn it off if it doesn't work properly, I just figured since it had it, I'd use it.

As far as the auto high beams, they seriously don't work w/ the fogs on?!? Whose idiotic choice was that? Every other make of car that had that feature worked regardless of the fog lights. I'll have to try running without them tomorrow AM and see what happens.

How to turn IntelliBeam on

1. Your vehicle’s engine must be running and headlamps must be on for IntelliBeam to work.
2. Set the headlamp control knob to AUTO or turn the low beam headlamps on.
3. Place the turn signal lever in the neutral position.
4. Depending on your vehicle, you can activate IntelliBeam by pressing a button on your turn signal lever or pushing the turn signal lever forward and back to the neutral position.
a. On newer vehicles, you may have to turn IntelliBeam on using the infotainment.* On these vehicles, select the Virtual Controls app, then tap Lights and turn Auto High Beams on to engage IntelliBeam.
5. When IntelliBeam is active and your low beam headlamps are on, you’ll see a green “A” icon or a white AUTO icon appear in the instrument cluster.
6. IntelliBeam detects lighting conditions and other vehicles and turns the high beams on and off as needed, depending on vehicle speed. (Note: IntelliBeam will only turn the high beams on at speeds above 25 mph.)
7. When IntelliBeam activates the high beams, a blue icon will appear in the instrument panel.
Site Maintenance

By having the Fog Lights on the Headlamp System is NOT in Auto... So it will not work... It is Step 2

My ZR2 is the same outside color, but i wish I had that black with red stitching interior. 👍

Got some WeatherTech accessories installed over the weekend. ALong with the hood protector, I got the no-drill mud flaps installed. My helper Stu (WAY in the background in front of the front tire) was there to make sure I did everything correctly. ;)

Typically, if you're in fog, you don't want high-beam lights; you want light that casts low to the ground. That's likely why the auto high-beam is turned off. Now, if you want them just for looks, that's a different problem.

#23 ·
When you're in fog, you wouldn't be using your high beams anyhow, so it shouldn't be an issue. I've owned 3 other vehicles that all had auto-high beam headlights, and they all still worked even w/ the fog lights on. This Colorado is the first one I've encountered that turning on the fogs turns off the auto-high beam headlights

#26 ·
So when you hit fogs, do your headlamps and tail lights turn on as well?
The only advantage I see would be when shutting down, you don't have to turn your lights off, since they are in suto.
Lights in manual would remain on after shutdown.

Well, a few more things I've done over the last week or so...

Black stainless steel exhaust tip from Amazon:

Hood struts and start/stop eliminator (which doesn't seem to be working at the moment - I'll have to get ahold of them and troubleshoot it):

--EDIT--

The stop/start DOES work, I was confused because the light on the dash does NOT stay off after a restart, but the start/stop eliminator is still active, even though the light comes back on.

Smoked CHMSL and cargo light from Amazon:

Also got the new cowl end pieces installed. Just waiting on some external LEDs.

Like @Xcanuk stated: watch out for the Center High Mount Light to possibly leak
That gasket does not like to be messed with

Like the cargo light, but I hope you took extra care with the install / gasket etc. The light is the same as the Gen2 and caused leaks when people played with them.
My dealer changed a bulb on my gen2, 2 three weeks later, my headliners was soaken wet after a rain, took me a bit to figure out what was what.

I got the Morimoto turn, brake, and license plate LED lights installed today, along with the LED reverse lights. Much brighter than the incandescent bulbs, and makes the truck look “right”, if that makes sense. You REALLY have to push them into the sockets though, so if you get them, just be aware of that. Well worth it in my estimation. Just waiting on the amber ones for the front, and then that project is complete.

—Edit—

The amber LasFit LEDs just showed up. Got them installed and they are all playing nicely together. Very happy with the results.

There is a YouTuber not far from where I live that has a channel called Repair Geek. He does a lot with lanolin undercoatings. He has a few videos comparing 2 different G2 Colorados - one undercoated and one not. Quite a difference between the 2, rust-wise.

I took my Z71 to him recently and had him spray it w/ Blaster lanolin undercoating. Living here in the rust belt, anything that can help extend the life of your vehicle is well worth it, at least IMHO. Very happy with what he did, and since he owns a G2 ZR2 he knows the vehicles pretty well.

I bought my truck used, and only got one key. I had a second key cut andf programmed to the truck, and when the dealer did that work, I mentioned when they were checking me out that I was getting the tin can sound out of the roof, the fact the phone charger doesn't, and that I had a hard time opening the fuel door.

They scheduled another appointment for yesterday, so I brought it in and they inspected those issues and ordered all the necessary parts. Once they come in, they will give me a call to set an appointment to get the issues addressed. I didn't have to fight with them or anything - just "ok, we'll fix those problems". And this is not the dealer I bought the truck from, so I'm happy with that.

#40 ·
Well all the parts came in for the needed repairs, so the truck will be dropped off at the dealership in 2 days to get fixed. They'll put me in a loaner for a couple of days that it's expected to take to fix.

I wanted to get my Noco Genius Gen5 battery charger hooked up to the truck in a more permanent fashion, so this is what I came up with. The Gen5 charger physically isn't that big, but it took me a bit to figure out where I wanted to mount it. I figured right on top of the battery hold down strap was as good a place as any. So I removed it, marked where I wanted the holes, and chucked it up in my drill press to drill it.

Image

Next I attached the positive and negative leads to the truck.

Image

I didn't want to cut anything, so the excess wires will be bundled together later. Next I mounted the charger to the strap w/ a couple of 12-24 x 3/4" SS screws, washers, and nuts.

Image

Zip-tied all the wiring up, stuffed the excess wiring down in the cavities around the fuse box, and viola! My on-board 5amp charger is mounted.

Nice, you are the 2nd one I've seen that mounted it on top of the battery. Did you ground it to the battery or the body ?
I rather hide mine a bit.
I plan to mount mine to the bracket just beside the battery, on the Noco 2D, the power plug and battery wires come out from each end.
2 zip ties and it will done. (when I get the energy)
I also made up a short extension, so I can sneak the extension plug out by my push bar. I don't want to open the hood.
