If you have a receiver hitch, use some 2" sq. tubing & fabricate a t-bracket to support the tailgate. Put the horizontal member at the furthest extension of the tailgate, with the receiver 2" sq. stock piece directly beneath it, vertically.

Wrap the horizontal member with a piece of discarded fire hose, plumbing pipe insulation (Armaflex is one brand) or whatever you can scrounge. Just be careful where you position the support so you don't dent the sheetmetal when you put a load on the tailgate. With the tailgate rated at 200 lbs and the hitch load rated at 500 lbs. that gives you 700 lbs. (for my '09 Canyon w/tow pkg.). Yours may differ in ratings.
