I had the dealer's oil change service done at 17,543 miles about 2 weeks ago. The oil life indicator is now showing 96% remaining, with only 126 miles since the change. At that rate I will be down to zero by 3,150 miles. The manual does not give a mileage figure for intervals other than if the Oil Life System has been accidentally reset (oil must be changed in 3,000 miles, if so). The dealer service department says 5,000 miles between oil changes. I had a 2001 Tacoma with full synthetic and the interval was calculated by time or distance (7,500 miles with synthetic). The oil change service department of the dealership said they had no issue if I wanted the oil sticker on the windshield changed to a 7,000 mile interval. The service department, though, balked at the idea of 7,000 mile intervals. Oil changes are a lifetime freebie at this dealership (with vehicle purchase) so It is no $$ out of my pocket to have it changed more frequently. But it seems an odd policy.
I worked for awhile at an independent repair shop that put a 5,000 mile range on synthetic oil changes. The oil reps scoffed at that. The real reason the shop changed oil at 5,000 miles was to sell more oil. So, if 7,500 miles was the norm for synthetic oil in 2001, why does a 2018 V-6 require 5,000 mile (synthetic) oil changes? And why is my Oil Life System ticking off 4% in 120 miles?
And add to that when I pulled in my driveway today and turned off the key the radio station went fuzzy, like it had changed stations (it could also be due to the bad weather). Nonetheless, as the radio, etc. works for 10 minutes after the key is turned off, I tapped the station button. Still fuzzy. I changed the station. The same fuzzy song conued to play across several station changes. Restarting the truck cleared the problem. The infotainment screen was just replaced a few months ago (September ?) because the radio screen was frozen. Is this incident the forbearer of new issues?
