Dexos2 has less sulfur in it than Dexos1 and was developed to help prevent soot getting into the DPF through the lubrication system and turbo burning it and making soot.
dexos2 also has controlled levels of sulfated ash which is detrimental to the DPF and phosporus which is deadly to catalysts.

got my truck back. also bought 2 quarts Dexos2 to have on hand at house. I think all is good and it was not all the way full when I got it. So we will know it is still full in about 2 weeks when I take it back for oil change which will be about 1500 more miles. Glad I got it back. I am really used to the truck now and like driving it much more than my 04 gx470 .

Thought I would share what I found on the oil front today when I picked up my Colorado. I had warned parts that I would want 7 quarts of oil and a filter to take home with me for the shelf.

The oil that GM parts sent was Mobil Super 3000 XE 5W-30. Mobil supplies all of GM's oil, but this wasn't even re-labeled. It is Dexos2 rated and is a FULL synthetic. The Mobil website lists it as not available in the US. The Chevrolet Performance Parts number is 88864041. With the UPC in hand I did a web search and Jeg's performance has it listed with a note "Manufacturer's Availability Date Unknown."

I paid less at the dealer, but do have a discount with the parts department there.

The bad news is that the PF69 has been superceded in all of the GM and ACDelco parts systems. All he could get is the whole filter assembly (PF2262G) with the cap. He even tried doing a special order of a PF69 but they sent him the 2262G. Hopefully they will become available again.

Key to this motor oil is it having a 600 ppm level of sulfated ash. It is, in essence, identical to any Porsche C30, Audi or VW TDI common rail diesel motor oil with a VW 507.00 specification or MB 229.51. Total will make oil like this, so will Pentosin, as will Castrol, and Pennzoil. You must read the label very carefully and look at and know the ACEA specifications for the oil.

ACEA Engine Oil Specifications - oilspecifications.org

ACEA A3/B4 is generally what is needed to be run in light truck common rail diesels with non clean out capable DPF filters... one of the specs is a very important 600 ppm sulfated ash load rating of the oil.
ACEA C3 is the new standard GMC has decided to go with here.

Mobil 1 5w-30 Formula ESP ( Extended Service Performance ) is one of these oils, for VW.

Total Quartz INEO MC3 5w-30 meets the GM Dexos 2 standard... it can be ordered online via Amazon.

DO NOT just go down to WALMart and expect to find oil for your very expensive common rail diesel being available. You have a Euro spec motor and DPF exhaust system, very similar to MB Adblue design, with no clean outs available on your DPF... which makes your oil choice selections very, very limited.

Play with this app if you want to learn a WHOLE lot more about oil specifications and compatible oils that will work.

Mobile 1 ESP in the recommended 5W-30 or 0W-40 is not avail. in the US :(

And it's ACEA C3 that GM recommends if you can't find a Dexos2 certified oil

The point of my post was that GM is sending out the Mobile XE 3000 to dealerships. It does have Dexos2 approval, as well as the ACEA C3. The other thing I found interesting was that at least one retailer appears to likely be getting some soon so perhaps it will soon be coming to the US with more wide spread availability giving all of us another option.

Even though it is a full synthetic, it is a lower class of synthetic than Mobil 1. With a bit of luck perhaps Mobil 1 ESP in 5w-30 will be available around the same time as the 3000 XE from retailers.

While the Total is likely a good product (I have always found them VERY good), it is not readily available in my area. The one parts house that can get Total products near me said they couldn't order it.

dexos1 and dexos2 certifications can both be met with semi-synthetic.

The GM branded dexos1 and dexos2 are both semi-synthetic.

Of course, a full synthetic is better. But even within synthetics there are different qualities.

The GM Dexos2 part number for our trucks is full synthetic.

The item number is 88865157. I've seen 1 ACDELCO bottle state full synthetic. Another bottle state synthetic blend with the same item number. I have no idea what they're doing except causing doubt and confusion. Years from now therer will probably be a ACDELCO lawsuit concerning mislabeled inferior products. Maybe it's the surplus of oil they took off the shelves from Dollar General relabeled when they got sued.

I would look on the bottle, and see if the synthetic oil is made in Germany or not.

Germany requires any bottle of oil labeled "synthetic" to be pure group 4 PAO based oil, or Group 5 Alkylyd based synthetic., not cheaper base stock synthesized Group III Castrol based "synthetic" that is done with hydrocracking petroleum based oil in a refinery, from crude oil stock, to form a synthetic oil.

Good thought Niner!

I went out to the garage and checked but there is no country of origin on the bottle. The bottle is 1 liter though and there are no ounce markings on the side like you normally see on the mobil bottles. The rear label has three different language sections on the back, and a box at the bottom with the approvals.

I picked up the oil and filter because I always keep filters and fluids on hand for all of my vehicles. It is a 'just in case' thing for me. Often when I am looking over the vehicles or doing maintenance, it is saturday or sunday afternoon and the parts stores are all closed. I don't live in the city.

I just know that this "Mobil 3000 XE" is Dexos2 and 5W-30 and that meets GM's requirements. It will also be the oil that my dealer puts in when the truck goes in for the first oil change, since that is what GM parts sent to the dealer.

Just in general, if your oil in in a metric labeled container, you are getting the good stuff, made from good base stock. That may not be the case with Castrol brands, anyone that knows Castrol knows about "German Castrol" 0w-30 motor oil, or "Green Castrol" 0w-30 motor oil, for diesel TDI engines. Notoriously good motor oil, full synthetic to get the 0W rating, and one of the most engine quieting motor oils around, made in germany, and the lab results between oil changes were every bit as good as Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-40 Delvac 1... Do a search on BITOG for German Castrol. Outstanding motor oil.

Does the truck actually let you know when an oil change is due? Im at 25% in 5800 miles. When should I take it in?
Pretty sure the Duramax manual mentions what to do and when to do it :wink2:

Enough miles and the change oil soon message will appear.
