After debating for months, I bought a 2017 colorado z71 duramax. Right off the bat, I heard a rattle coming from seat belt area that drove me crazy (especially left ear). About a week later, another loud rattle from the passenger side glove box area is present. That same day, I crawled underneath just to observe and found grease slung everywhere. The driver side cv boot was busted. The next day I discovered several bubbles in the clear coat on passenger side of the bed.

Anyone have any of the issues? Currently have 323 miles on it and pretty disapponted. Its currently at dealer to adress rattles and cv boot. Im not sure what they will do about the clear coat issues.

When I read reviews like this I feel like I am reading about another truck. This is one of the tightest vehicles I've driven. Maybe all the cheap plastic in the WT is secured better, LOL.

Belts are an issue in many cars. Most times they replace them or even pack them with silicone to dampen the rattle.

I have not had any issues other than the paint. While mine is not bad enough to worry about it should be better. But it was there when I bought it and it was not enough to stop me from buying.

Overall I have had a very good new owner experience.

One possible source of rattles on the diesel is the ECM. It is mounted to the firewall on the passenger side and is held in place with two plastic clips. It is a pretty hefty piece of aluminum and the low vibe of the diesel can make it put out a low rattle that sounds like it is coming from the glovebox. The issue is easily fixed - the ECM can be removed from it's clips with no tools, put some self sticking closed cell weatherstripping foam on the back and reinstall. This keeps it from rattling. No issues to date, other than the rattly ECM - knocking on wood.

Really liking the diesel powerband. Ya, it is not fast in a drag race, but what I really like is the diesel feels like a real truck engine, with lots of effortless low down grunt that just begs to pull a load. Hills and Colorado's elevation do not phase it. It just dials up more boost, makes more torque, holds onto 6th gear where everything else I have driven needs two downshifts and 4,000 rpm, all the while making cool diesel noises and feeling solid and unstoppable on the open road at only 1,800 RPM. This is a driving experience that is unique in a mid size truck - no other power train offers it. Also, with more break in (nearing 6K miles now), the fuel economy is becoming ridiculously awesome.

Don't let the early niggles get ya down, it will be fine. I was a little nervous at first, taking the diesel leap. Now I am glad I sprung for the Minimax. It is just plain cool  I hope you wind up loving your truck as much as I love mine.

I have the driver side seat belt rattle. play with the top adjuster a bit to moderate it.
Had the same seat belt rattle on my 2016 where it came outta the wall. Best advice is the "jostle" it around on the wall a bit. Just seemed to get out of place on occasion and running it up and down the height settings settled it down. Like the worst spot possible for a rattle as well being right at ear level!
I have the same rattle issue coming from the driver side seatbelt area. It sounds like a stretched wire flapping and hitting metal. Sometimes it stops after 15 minutes or so, sometimes it is intermittent. :frown2:

My 15 is still rattle free, and has been from day one.

Way less then I expected

I wanted to like this truck, I love the idea of this Diesel Canyon SLT pickup. I just hate the execution. I should have picked up my money and ran when I saw the paint job on this $45,000 truck. But nooo I took it home just to find out the whole truck is the same quality as the paint job. 3 major warranty repairs and a front seat that looks like it is worn out at 8000 miles, just what kind of leather are they using? No lock on fuel access door! Now I have trouble codes coming on because a stud tore into my wire harness, so it's back to the dealer for another warranty/recall repair. They surely won't have the part so it will be two more visits. Going back to German cars, this is getting traded on a BMW or Mercedes Diesel. GMC should be ashamed with all the cost cutting showing up in quality control.

Just curious, do you have any photos of your worn out seats? I have the Z71 seats and they are still brand new at 13, 000 miles. There really hasn't been any worn out seat complaints on this website for the 2nd gen trucks? There have been a few that have had stitching problems where the dealers replaced the seat covers. But, I haven't seen one compliant about worn out leather with less than 10 thousand miles on the truck. Also, I don't have any rattles at all and my Red Hot paint job is excellent. Maybe GM has more problems with metallic paints? Anyhow, show us these worn out seats at 8,000 miles. I don't believe you. >:)

There is one squeak or rattle you can have that comes from the headliner clips not being secure. I had a squeak and read it here on the forum. I forget where the post is located. Just climb in the back and slowly push up with your palms around the dome light and moving out and you might hear two clicks. Problem solved. Other than that, my truck is probably the quietest vehicle I ever owned.

This kinda goes out to a bunch of people in the forum land. If I was buying a truck and I really didn't need one and just wanted to look cool as truck owner, and my choices are between a truck and a BMW or Mercedes sedan... That would be just stupid crazy! I'd pick the expensive sports car any day. I wouldn't be able to carry **** in it, but it would be fun as hell to drive. I've driven both and they are a blast. Why would you buy a pickup?

#18 ·
Why would I buy a pickup? Well first off I bought this particular truck Because it has a Neutral transfer case setting. It is setup to flat tow behind my Motorhome. There are only a few vehicles that can be used this way. So there now you know. No I didn't buy it to look cool. I've owned several Porsche's that served better in that department. Regardless of why I bought this is the fact that it has pissed me off now and I've begun to start the divorce proceedings. I'm retired and follow the different forums for all my vehicles as a hobby. I maintain them to the highest level and learning from other owners is a strong tool. I want to like this truck, but the last straw is the latest issue. I know they can fix it so maybe I should calm down? It does tow nice behind a Motorhome, but installing the required equipment was a huge job. Took two full days.

#24 ·
You just stated in an earlier post that you are trading this in for a BMW or a Mercedes. What? Does it take less time to set up a different vehicle behind your motorhome? One of those? I'm not getting what you are saying. And, what was the last straw that is the latest issue? Just curious. The leather or the paint? Or a squeak? I never saw any photos of leather looking like that here unless someone damaged it. I would make the dealer replace it, if in fact it just fell apart. This hasn't been a problem here at all. Anyhow, good luck.

Picture of seat wear

Wear that is flaking off outer layer of leather. I used a sharpy marker to cover the exposed white to help hide the issue. That leather panel also is flaking at the seams. This started early on. Clearly a defect in that leather. It looks worse in person and before I put sharpy on the seams and other areas.

Well, to tell you the truth, you are the first person on this website to ever post a picture of this problem. That's a fact. I know because I was a mod here when these trucks were brand new. I'm sure if it wasn't a problem caused by you, that GM would fix it. It kinda looks like scratches to me. No? Maybe it's bad photo? Maybe make the dealer fix that?

#20 ·
I'm with JBT, over 12k and not a single problem that i didnt cause, like light surface scratches from tree branches in the woods. No rattles even after running 40-45 thru washouts on red clay roads. Bad enough to cause the rear end to drift around some curves. I have not notices and paint defects nor rattles in the seat belt. I guess I got a Wednesday truck instead of a Monday truck.

No matter the make model or Brand there are problem models.

Often web sites are flooded with low post number people complaining. That is not to say they are lying but the nature is to vent so you see the post. As it gets here the complaint post are low compare to most vehicles.

But even the Germans and Asian.

Mfg all have cars with issues as most brands are close in quality anymore.

Mostly this all comes down to how the mfg and or dealer deals with the issue.

Sorry to see trouble here most of this can be corrected by a good dealer and nothing more will come of it.

most here have not had issues and those who have had them dealt with and got on enjoying truck. Give it a shot and let the dealer address it and odds are good you will go on trouble free.

I've had many 'interior' panels come unsnapped & such (rattles, noises).
My Collision Alert plastic cover comes unsnapped. I think I've snapped it in place at least twice. Door panels / speaker rattles - press and snap panels back in place. Just the other day washing the interior....the whole side panel between front door & back door was sticking out farther than normal. Oh....look....push and snap in place. I had my 'wood looking' panel on the passenger door replaced becuase the snaps were bitched up from the factory and I couldn't snap it back in place.

I admit that if I had paid 45k for this truck I too would be tremendously unhappy. In my eyes, It's a 25k platform and there is nothing on earth they can do to make it worth 20k more.

#32 ·
I completely agree, except that the way to fix it is not buy the Truck if you believe it isn't worth what GM wants for it....not cry about it after the fact...

The prices of these trucks and their accessories are slowly creeping up and up. At the beginning of the 2016 model year in July of 2015, you could build and price a 2016 Colorado Z71, V6, 4x4, extended cab at under $32,000 sticker price. My Chevy black bow ties were only $100.00 which is still a rip off. I think the only accessory that hasn't gone up in price is the Bose radio with nav. I guess people are buying a lot of these trucks.

#40 ·
I agree. I've been looking at the new Twins since 2015 before we finally ordered out 2017 in January. Prices have creeped up but improvements were added also.

Still , with a bit of rebate and discounts we were able to get our 2017 LT CCSB just under $32K. This is with the Luxury and Convenience Packages which includes leather and quite a few other upgrades.

We were ok with the sale price.

Here is the deal $25,00 does not buy much anymore. The average. Out of a car is now $35,000 and that is just average.

This truck is not an opened end price model where they can start low and go up to what ever they get. Let's face it this truck becomes a tough sale north of $38,000.

They sell in numbers of what 200k 250k but not like the full size that sell nearly 2 million in half ton and then shares parts with the larger platforms. This leverages the cost more making it stil, profitable with even large discounts due to volume.

You can get a $25,000 truck but you are going to lose something along the way like size, even more quality or level of ability.

The fact is all vehicles are over priced and will continue to get more expensive hence why GM and others are investing in ride sharing companies.

The reality is everyone wants to be a millionaire but they want to shop at WalMart. The trouble is that just does not work.

The one thing we have true solice in is the resale value of our trucks is much greater than most vehicles out there generally in the top 5 in the American market.

I was at a dealer today with used Canyons with 30k miles and twonyears old priced at $32,000. Few vehicles would lose around $5,000 over two years as most do more than that in the first month.

The used truck market is broken right now... mostly because of suckers who think used is always a better deal. I've met many of them in real life. I can't get a used v6 2015 Colorado for what I paid for my new 2017, and that's with the inferior old motor and trans. I got my truck for $26k (granted I had to walk away from 2 dealers 3 times to finally make that price happen) and I am super happy with it. Everything I need and nothing I don't. Everything right down to the I0B radio with android auto is perfect, AA is all you need. If you get the custom special edition package, nobody will even realize your WT is a WT if you care what people think. Even If you felt like you needed 4x4 you would still be under 30k. The best part is you can just upgrade the specific things you want. Say you felt like you needed fog lights, no problem you can get those for $70. You want the leather look dash, no problem $500. Different seats? Plenty of them out there. You want the leather center console, sure, $100. Bose speakers, $60. Just keep an eye on the junkyard listings and replace everything you want. In my case the only thing I really felt was missing was a softer center console lid.

All it would take to decimate the used truck market is a $1 a gallon increase in gas prices. Suddenly they will be giving used trucks away, mid-sized trucks will probably do the best though. It seems people are obsessed with buying as much as they can possibly afford and this brief lul in gas prices thanks to shale oil has made many Americans think they can afford a truck.

While there has been slow downs the truck market and CUV markets continue to thrive.

Gas has only had limited effects over a limited time. If anything it would enhance the appeal of the smaller trucks.

you can slow it but it is one segment hard to stop.

The reality most will not play the buy the work truck game and then buy everything to fix it up. ,Amy can't do it and many more won't do it.

#37 · (Edited)
Don't even get me started with CUVs. LOL. Things that really grind my gears. At least toyota's commercials are honest about who these stupid, slow, and overpriced lifted hatchbacks are being made for. I've never met a CUV driver that wouldn't be better served by a Honda Fit.

#42 ·
I may be missusing the term 'CUV' I thought that term was used specifically for compact SUVs like the Trax/Encore, HRV, CHR, etc. I take much less issue with larger SUVs that actually provide some utility over a small hatchback, I used to tow my boat with a ford escape. But yes you are right, people don't buy cars for purely practical reasons.

#43 ·
No you are fine. CUV is mostly car based FWD vehicles with AWD options. The line is getting blurred on many anymore as the CUV is expanding in size to take over some Compact SUV models. The morphing will never end.

To be honest most of us can get by with a Chevy Spark but where is the fun in that.

At one time people bought cars for style and image. Now they buy them for utility and many CUV models for more room inside. Most cars have large trunks but the opening is so small you can not get much in there. My Malibu is a perfect example.

The companies are just scrambling to find what people will buy and adapt. The market has really changed. Sedans and Coupes are hard sells today.

Just a look at the mall almost all are Utility vehicles of some kind.

I would hate to be a product planner today.
