Im looking to buy some 31x10.50x15 Mud Terrain Tires for my Z71. Im looking at the obvious brands Good Year MT/R, Yokohama Geolander MT, Firestone Destination MT, Pro Comp MT and BFG Mud Terrain. What experiences if any have you guys had with these if any? Also is there any other tires out there I should look at? Hows tread wear on them?
I had some Futura MT from Pep Boys on my 91 Cherokee and they preformed really well. Plus they they had 35,000 miles on them and still looked brand new. But unfortunately they were discontinued because they didnt sell that well.
Im wanting something that preforms well in snow, rain and of course mud. I hunt and fish so I use a lot of back roads. Plus the truck is my daily driver so I dont want something that will wear out quickly because of in town and highway driving.

Most any mud tire is only going to get you on ave. 35k miles, some less some more.
I have had the GoodYear maxium terrian tires before. They are a great tire untill wear them down and they become slick as snot. I have heard that they have had problems with the puncture resistant side-walls and they do puncture. But that was only in a extreme air-down situation for crwaling over large sharp rocks. If you were into rock climbing you would have to purchase insurance on your tires or Goodyear will not even look twice at your problem.
GY's run about 155 dollars a tire, too expensive for me to put on my truck for 35k miles.

Right now i'm looking into finding a very cheap mudding tire for summer use only and running my BFG TA KO's in the winter for better traction.

Really i would not pay over 110 dollars for a set of maxium or mud terrain tires, becareful there is diffrence in the two. The tire must claify if it is a MUD TERRAIN or MAXIMUM TRACTION tire.

CUMHO"S are pretty cheap.

Your cheapest tires are going to be the weird off brand tires, and not bogger tires like INTERCO'S Swamper series.
Although you can pick up a set of Interco Trxus MT for 105 dollars if you can find some one to order them. Them are more of a Mud tire built for the road. They got high marks in snow and ice and was decent in mud. This tire kinda breaks the mold of the Super Swamper and is narrower and has siping in the tread which makes it good in ice and snow. Somthing no other swamper tire has.

The Pro Comp M/T's have some siping in them and would make a better tire than the BFG's the Destination Fire hawk and the GoodYear tire.

If you see all big rubber knobs and no small slices in the rubber knobs it has no siping and is strickly a mud tire with little traction in ice and wet slick conditions.

Also the deeper the tread on the tire the more of a chance that the tire will "WALK" meaning float on the rubber giving you the false feeling of the road. It will make high speed cornning kind of scary at first because your truck will float arond side to side while the tires are still planted on the ground. It may make you think that the tires are unbalanced, but they are perfectly fine.

There have been people here that have tried the Interco Trxus and have taken them off thinking they were to unbalanced. They Have like 19/32 or more of tread, once you get away from about 16.5/32 the tire begains to walk and also our truck are not that heavy.

Well hope i have not scared you off, just wanted you to know what you could get into. Don't beafraid to buy something with deep tread or somthing that does not have siping. If you like the expensive tires, that is quite all right too. I just wanted you to have a heads up on what to expect.

Good Luck

I got my 31x10.50R15 Goodyear MT/Rs (Maximum Traction/ Reinforced) from Discount Tire for $450 installed, siped, and lifetime warrantied. I traded my crappy Generals for them. Honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better tire. They were a little loud, but not bad compared to the BFG KMs. Offroad, they couldn't be stopped. Mud, snow, sand, dirt, whatever...you throw it at them, they throw it back. On the street, they had really good manners. The siping helped them grip during the wet conditions. Also, don't let anyone who hasn't owned them fool you. If you rotate them every 3-5000 miles and keep proper air pressure in them, you can get 50-55k miles out of them. I had almost 15k on mine and they hadn't even lost 2/32nds of an inch. For what its worth, I've never heard anyone that owned MT/Rs say that they sucks. Thousands of Jeepers can't be wrong.

Also, it isn't really the deep tread that causes your truck to wander. Its usually that big tread=big tire. Big tires, until recently, weren't offered in radial. They were offered only in steel, nylon, or kevlar belted. Belted tires have a BAD wandering problem, especially on lighter vehicles. They rely on the air pressure to keep the sidewalls stiff, rather than the radial belts of a typical radial tire, so air pressure is CRITICAL on belted tires. Your typical belted tire is almost anything by Interko (Swamper LTB, Thornbird, Swamper STS, Bogger, and the infamous IROK). I'd recommend staying away from that whole brand unless you're buy them as an offroad only tire. They are killer offroad, but are too expensive for street use.

Anyways, the choice is yours in the end. Take a look at your options. Read reviews online and in offroad mags. Everyone has their brand, like beer, so stick to facts, rather than "my friend says...". Make your own opinions and you'll be happier in the long run. 8)

Ive been looking at the Pro Comp Xterrain tires and think they look pretty good. I have read some reviews but its just like any tire one guy says they are the greatest the other says they are crap. I found a set on eBay for around 600 and free shipping. Then there are some I have never heard of before for around 450 shipped.

Take a look at the Pro Comps. http://www.procomptires.com/xterrain1.html

Here are the other off branded ones I have never heard of.

Does anyone know much about these. I kinda like the aggressive sidewalls of the Pro Comps's more than the others.

I personally don't care for Procomp tires. They are overpriced and perform no better than MT/Rs or BFG Mud Terrains. Plus, the xterrains aren't really a good mud tire. They are better suited at rockcrawling and sand, but anything is better than stock. The Trailcutters are a Liberty tire, I believe. They look like they are more of an all-terrain pattern, since the center tread blocks are closer together. They would pack up with mud in a hurry if you get into anything thicker than pea soup. You might be better off looking at the Maxxis Buckshot Mudders (or whatever they're called). Maxxis makes quad tires and good ones at that, so I can't imagine that they would make truck tires any worse. Plus, they are cheap. I think a set of 31x10.50R15s goes for around $399-450 on ebay.

Again, no personal experience with that actual tire, but I've run maxxis tires on every quad I've built and never had a complaint.

Good luck with your choice and those Xterrain's do look nice.

I installed Big O BigFoot XT 30x9.5 R15 and got nothing but good experience in the dirt and water with them out here, in the desert. The one thing I'll mention is they affected my MPG's and pretty significantly.

With the General's I averaged 22.9 MPG but, I had to replace them in March. Got the BigFoot XT's and with 3k logged; I now see an average of 19.1 MPG. Right about 4 MPG drop. I paid $559 for the tires, with labor and tax my total came to $670.

Here is Big O spiel on the tire:

if u go with bfgoodrich dont get the MT's there not worth the money and treadlife if ur not gonna be in the mud everyday, the AT's work just good for everyone who uses off road on this site
I agree. These are the only tires I put on my Colorado and my 4Runner. They are great in the summer for a smooth ride and they work great in the mud and snow.

Good Year is just what it's name says... Good for a Year! That's it. I believe that they have gone downhill in the last few years as posted above.

Those tires are ok. I dont like the center two treads in the tire because the up and down look of them. They dont seem to get as much traction as something that is going across the tires not in the same directions the tires spin. If the tread is the other way it causes friction and therefor more traction in off road situations. Just my opinion.

I've had Good year MT/R's in fact i had to wait 6 week to get mine because they were so new at the time i bought them.
It is true tire will WALK because of the tread depth and yes becauuse they are big tires but mainly because of tread depth. The deeper the tread the more the tire is going to walk. It is like the truck is floating on the rubber and give you a false sense. It is perfectly normal for a mud tire to do that. I never got 50k out of my Mt/R's mayby if you run them untill there is no tread. I took mine off when i still had some tread left. Where can you get MT/Rs for 450 mounted and siped and balanced?
That is incredably cheap.

31's are like a 150 a tire.

if you want a mud tire on a budget like I did, go with the maxxis bighorn. So far they have had good traction in the mud and I haven't lost traction in the rain on the roads at all yet. The whole set was 410 installed because I talked to place down. Thats about as cheap as you can get the generals, lol! But they have made great ATV tires for a long time so I thought I'd try them out and I have to say they are a great buy, saves $200 over other brands that can go toward tuition for me.

If you aren't on a budget, I'd say BFG A/T's for many of the reasons stated above. Good luck!
