I bought 5 for mine. total weight in the back around 300lbs or so.

I used to put #240 in my S-10.

Haven't needed to in the past, although I've been slipping around quite a bit on the BFGs thusfar this year. Maybe I need to air them down of something, I'm incredibly unimpressed with them thusfar :?

That should be more than enough.

I've herd bad things about placing them after the axle, like taking weight off of the front "braking" wheels. Is there any truth to this?
I doubt it'd hurt your braking enough for it to be noticeable.

When I put them in my S-10, I always put them right over the axle, though, and they didn't tend to move much.

I only ever needed 2 70 pound bags in my old peg legged Ranger. But it also had a hard fiberglass tonneau cover. So depending on the cover's weight I'd guess between 225-250 worth of weight. I also put the bags against the tailgate to create better leverage of the added weight on the axle. They hopped around a time or two but a 2x4 in the bed prevented them from sliding around.

I only plan on 2 of the 70 lb bags for my Colorado with the G-80 and a vinyl tonneau. I figure that with the traction aid of the locking rear compared to my old one wheel wonder Ranger that it should be similar in getting around. Except i fully expect the Colorado would have its @$$ sticking out sideways most of the time! lol

This is the 2nd Winter my BFG's have seen and I knew from last year that they are pretty bad in the snow and ice, but it doesnt bother me too much, if it gets really bad I just go into 4WD and then I can crawl through anything.

well even with 6 back there my a$$ end is still sliding around i have a 2x6 in the slots in the bed so they don't slid around on the bedliner. It might be to much weight possibly tho? like swingin a bag of sand around its easier to stop with less weight maybe i should lose a bag or 2. I'm all ears here i've never been through a winter in a truck before so any info you guys got to make it handle better is more then appreciated

I threw my BFG A/Ts off last month. Never been a huge fan of them but they do look great on a truck. I had a problem w/ almost hydro playning when i was comming to a stop on a wet highway, not a good feeling so i threw a set of BFG long trails, on and much better. Kinda worrysome that you all are having problems w/ sliding all over the place. I have a explorer also so if these trucks are not exactly the best in the snow, might be driving the blue oval lil more in the bad weather. Also i've had other trucks w/ 5-7 sand bags in the back. Might help some!

My first winter I bought 6 65lb bags and immediately found that it was too much, so I cut it back to 4 bags. then last winter I only used 2 65lb bags and got by fine. This year I am again going with only 2 bags.

I don't put any in my 07 4X Crew, just good tires and hit 4X when i need it.
In previous 2X trucks I used about 300 - 400 pounds over the axle

You guys putting the weight all the way in the rear are playing a dangerous game. Now the center point of the load is all the way in the back and if you slide sideways that weight is
going to spin you around like a whip. Not to mention the extra load on
the springs back there. This issue arose with i believe Dodge extended vans
a few years back when several students in a college I believe
were killed as the extended van was simply an add on with a long bench seat past the
rear wheels. With 4 people sitting past the wheels the van was unstable
and when the accident happened the van rolled or flipped due to the
instability.

WOAH 6 sandbags? That's way too much weight in my opinion. I have used 4 with no problems. I am currently using 3 this winter. They are 70 lbs apiece. I put one on each side next to the wheel tubs in the bed and one in the middle. I don't have any problems and drive 140 miles round trip to work here in illinois and i'm in a rural area so i encounter anything and everything in winter conditions. The problem with that much weight is your front end is up in the air reducing your steering ability not to mention your lights will blind any oncoming traffic. Believe me i used to get the brights from a lot of oncoming traffic when i had 4 bags in there including the police! Also you will wear your front tires weird along with the rear and lets not forget your gas mileage will plummet. I have a 5 speed so that helps but i think most of the problems i'm reading here is the driving ability or habits in this type of weather. believe me i have drove through blizzard conditions with 4 wheelers in the ditch and my little 2wd colly just trackin on through

Well i understand what your sayin with the headlights i get flashed allot, but i did before i put the bags back thre. I've learned from on here that its because our lights are angled to high from the factory. I started with 4 bags and it didn't help any. I have junk tires, i meen there brand new but they suck, they came with the truck when i bought it a few months ago. I am tryin to supplement for poor tread patterns with the weight, but i'll lose a few bags ansd see if that helps. I need tires but i can't find any for a good price. I live in illinois also where abouts are you from?

I "borrowed" 4 bags of softener salt from work each weighing about 45lbs so roughly a 180lbs. I had slid into the ditch twice on the same corner going to and from work one day without any weight in the back. The weight makes a big difference.
