kinda random conversation here, just rambling about not much ;)

As long as I can remember, since I've owned a car, regardless if new / used, I have always washed them and did interior detailing. Sometimes weekly, most times every 2-3 depending on time / weather. Never really thought much about the waxing side of it, until 2019, when I bought a brand new Chevy Equinox. There I was waxing every few months or so, by hand. Although I didn't do it much at all over the past year (before selling), I didn't mind waxing at all. It's not a horrible task, but certainly takes a chunk of time out of your day. Never found the time to wax. Washing became a "Mikes Car Wash" type routine. I really enjoy washing cars, but again, i think it might have been due to time. With my new 2022 Colorado, I'd like to get back into the washing by hand, detailing, and waxing.

As a kid I used to use the good ol Armor All brand from the local department store / auto part store. That was then, Now I am loyal to Griot's Garage Products. I have turned into a detailing product snob :D . I got into that product line in 2018 when I purchased my 63 Beetle, which I still have. Although that is my show car, I have learned to spend a good amount of time in the details of giving it a show car shine. There are so many products out there, and brands. I think I watched a few reviews on youtube a few years back that talked about Griot's, and I decided to go with it. Although I don't have the experience to say Griots is better than another brand, I can say it certainly serves me well with the results I get.

I have gone back and forth about getting a paint correcting polisher, but I don't know if that would be as satisfying to do, than it is when i think of the final results. There are so many products, steps, and hours involved ans I don;t know if it's all worth it. Other than the satisfaction of having a squeaky clean / mirror finish paint job. I guess I can only answer that.

For me, I am a white collar employee that does a lot of site work, but always indoors. Never going through dirt / mud / rain. Always in a parking structure and / or parked in my garage at home. So sitting in the sun for long lengths of time is very rare. So a wash / wax will last me a good while before having to redo due to the elements that Mother Nature brings my way. Washing / interior detailing / and every few month waxes will always be a routine.

With all that random rambling, I ask this. Regardless of your occupation, year of your truck, etc, how much detailing do you do to your truck? How often? How involved is the process?

Probably once a month I do a deep clean of interior, exterior. The whole 9 yards. Two bucket wash, chemical decontamination, mechanical decontamination, clay bar and polish and or wax, to both my truck and my GFs car. It's sort of a meditation routine, helps center me and keep my mind off negative crap, I take better care of my vehicle so interior is a breeze, hers not so much. Cloth seats so extracting is a must probably 6-10 hrs total on hers and 4-6 on mine.

Honestly I’m retired and drive minimum. My 2019 Colorado Z71 4x4 crew cab bought new has now 8,000 miles. It’s kept in a carport. Ever since new I have never waxed it. I wash it with a good wash and wax. And during dry season every day use a California Duster on it and wipe the windows with an Absorber and seldom wash it. Trucks never been on gravel. I know everyone at the dealership where I bought it (I was the custodian there 4 years till I retired) So usually 2 or 3 times a week when I’m out I swing by and b.s. They say that’s the cleanest white truck they ever saw and swear I wash it every day. The truck looks like brand new. I’m sure there’s minor fine scratches but being white they don’t show at all. 😊

I wash mine approx every 3-4 months, as we seem to have some sort of rain every week.
Use Turtle wax hybrid ceramic polish twice a year
wash the inside of the windshield about once every couple months and wipe down the interior, and wash floor mats then also, always sand/dirt/mud on my shoes
Now I keep the wife's Grand Cherokee spotless, do not want her to be seen in a dirty Jeep

Lol same, if some dude saw my GF driving around in a dirty ass car he'd be like hey, she's single, obviously ain't got no man taking care of her or her car

I use it as it's meant to be used, and I keep it spotless. Every truck I've ever owned. I own detailing equipment and keep 'em garaged. I don't cut the paint, just keep it clean and a good coat of wax on it.

Once a month I'll "touchless" (pressure washer + foam cannon ) wash my daily driver and vacuum it out. These cordless or corded Dewalt vacuum cleaners are legit.

I'll also do the above after any trip ~2hrs or longer each way. Or after every offroad outting.

I wash 3 times a year at the pay-n-spray, using the forbidden foam brush/broom. Rubbing compound buff maybe once a year if I'm feeling frisky. Meguiars natural protectant on the interior. Done. She lives in her filth. Dirty girl. 😏

Rarely (very rarely) any off-road for this city slicker, mainly because I keep my truck spotless 90% of the time and can't stand to look at it when it's dirty. I use Advanced RV and Auto Wash Diamond Shield | Shop | Cleaning and Turtle Wax Spray and Dry. Invisible Glass and newspaper on all the windows.

my canyon is the first new car i have ever owned. it seems like it doesn't really need wax at this point but i still wash it by hand w/microfiber towels and a power washer every couple weeks with a wax maybe once a month. not sure how often i should wax it. . . i live in south louisiana with lots of rain and heat so i feel like i'm really just doing it for protection and not shine at this point.

2018 W/T extended 3.6 with tow. Pay and spray maybe monthly, but vacuum every week and clean the glass. It's a truck, and if I wash it more often, it gets cantankerous. Besides clean paint makes the dings more obvious. I use it hard towing, hauling, and doing other truck things with it. I do religiously maintain the mechanicals and servicing.

For those of you that use the foam cannon, how well does that actually work? Are you using that as your sole washing method, or do you also wash it with a microfiber mitt?
I've seen other Youtubers do it, but to me I don't see how it works. Nothing beats a mitt / sponge that you actually have to scrub with (IMO), but I have never tried a foaming cannon in order to compare.

If you use the foam cannon alone you'll end up with a film of dirt once it dries, the foam cannon should be used in conjunction with a microfiber chenille mitt (my preference lol). Won't do you much good otherwise, it's just another step in the process.

I love to keep my vehicles clean inside and out and always wipe out all the inside of door frames with microfiber. I also use rejex twice a year and never claybared it even. When I traded in my 2018 ram dually the dealer was slobbering over how clean it was kept. I used the rejex on the 42ft rv and it kept it new looking on the jell coat. I found it does build up overtime but don't get it on rough plastics cause it ain't coming off at least in 4 years anyway lol

I learned how to clay bar on this truck. Holy cow is that nice! And easy!! Then I used McGuire's hybrid ceramic wax. (Went all in with McGuire's). A guy drove a circle around it in the parking lot. When he saw me he shouted out his truck window, "Shiny!" I just smiled a proud smile.

I really only detail my truck once a year. Wash, clay bar, polish, turtle wax hybrid solution ceramic. The interior gets vacuumed out ~monthly and I use zaino leather cleaner/conditioner on the seats (cleaner only on the steering wheel). I drive it through the car wash (I know, gasp) regularly especially during the winter months to keep the salt off as much as possible.
