Just had the 500 mile break in oil change done at a oil change place........... I know these fellows aren't mechanics, but the one under the truck said he smelled gasoline in the oil "pretty strong". Is that normal ??? I'm now completely paranoid !!

I smell gas in the oil on every vehicle I have ever changed oil on, including my Colorado, pretty normal IMO.

Well guess that depends on the dealership and there service shop reputation. I live in small town, know the owner and have known the service manager for years. He knows how picky I am and doesn’t have the constant turnover employed oil change guy change my oil but the service guy that is picky about doing his work right. Been doing that for years on different GM vehicles and very confident will be done right. When done not even a fingerprint any where.

Walmart messed up my treads on my drain pan and had to go back and forth with them and after they finally decided to pay for a new pan they didn't give me any money for a rental so yeah lesson learned only the dealership for everything. Full synthetic multipoint and tire rotation $83 after tax

Since the high pressure fuel pump is driven by a cam lobe the pump can leak gas into the oil. Generally it's a small amount and it evaporates out. If you can smell it, that's not good, replace the pump. Gas in the oil will make the oil less effective at lubrication and you know what that means for bearing surfaces. I didn't smell any gas in the oil during my first oil change at 5k miles preparing for a long road trip, drove another 4700 miles and getting ready to do another, hopefully I smell nothing but oil.

I got to witness first hand, someone who went to the same oil change place I did, before I started doing it myself.

Brand new Chevy 3/4 ton in for its first oil change, back in 1988. He was inside and I was waiting in line behind him. He left and I went in. Before they finished my 88 Ford Ranger, that guy came walking back with no truck. Apparently they just started the drain plug in and never tightened it. It fell out and engine seized. He was screaming and not happy.

So I have been changing my own oil ever since. I only got 2 free oil and filter changes from dealer. Have already used them both.
