to help answer the OP's question
I call town driving stop light to stop light no faster than 40mpg whether a ZR2 or a WT, will get about the same gas mileage moving the 5,000 truck around
mine got about 17 in town some will say 20ish, all depends on how one drives.

now living in a city in which you may be going 60mph for 10 miles each way n stopping light to stop light less often, I would say 20 if not better, but if yu are doing 70 in that 60 and in and out of traffice, lets just say 15 on a good day

My 2021 3.6 Gaser and my now 2024 2.7 turbo both basically have not great MPG in city 14-15 L/ 100 kms; not a thing you can do about it. Just need to accept it and ignore it, know on the highway and in warmer weather it gets a lot better.

The 3.0 diesel duramax in my brother's silverado is amazing, destroys my MPG hands down everyday of the week about ; this past summer 8 L / 100 kms. I imagine if you consider the extra cost of diesel, we may be closer in overall cost ? But the duramax has more power and should last longer.

The choice is yours, either way, you will love the truck.
Thank you.

Do you think your 3.6 got better fuel mileage in that new 2.7 turbo?

If I were to buy a truck for the duty you’re describing I think I would go with a gas engine. I like my little diesel but they’re just not made for city driving. It also doesn’t have the “pep” the gas V-6 has. As far as all of the talk about DEF hassles, no. It’s like Drax said, dealing with DEF is a non issue. If you do decide to go with the diesel, you may just have to make an extra effort to keep it “happy”. I do a bit of local driving 25mph-45mph but then I’ll get it up to 65 or so on the highway for a bit, especially during a regen. They do have a very unique personality. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you very much for your honesty.

My 2022 Z71 3.6 gas 4 wheel drive gets around 17 combined for commuting to work 24 miles away. All highway best on a tank of gas was 28 mpg which was impressive ! Tried many times trying to up that on my commute as the best combined I got was 19/20 but being severely conservative ! Everyone tells me that is expected and I am ok with it .... Absolutely love the truck even with its quirky Electronics / Digital Info Center behavior sometimes !

Drive them both and see which one you like. If it’s a daily driver you need to feel comfortable and enjoy driving it.
I’ve done the diesel thing for years, albeit not the baby max. My gasser was liberating for me. I just drive it and don’t ‘think’ about it.
….just blip into a gas station and go!
My commute is 38 miles stop/go each way. I average 22 mpg.

My lifetime hand calculated average is right at 20.4 mpg.

There are 21 traffic lights on my 9 mile commute to work. I do about 18.5 on that trip with warming the truck up for a minute before leaving. That means I stop and accelerate about every half mile. About the worst driving conditions you can have as you just get to speed then stop and start again.

Good morning trying to decide whether to buy a diesel or the gas VVT 3.6. Do a lot of town driving. I was just wondering what kind of fuel mileage people are getting with a stock truck around a 2020 through 2022. Thank you.
Vast majority of my driving on my 2022 LT 4WD is around town so I'm happy if I average anywhere from 15 to 17 MPG. On the highway I can count on 23 to 24 MPG and my highest ever was just over 26 MPG

New to me 2018 3.6L with over size tires, i get 16 to 18 in town if I'm lucky, truck was a steal though so i don't worry about it.

Wow, that’s good fuel mileage. Yours is exactly what I’m looking at right now is a 21Z 71. It’s got 36,000 miles one owner. Is yours completely stock and have you had any issues with the emission
I have a 17 diesel CCLB Z71. 105k miles. I had 11 DPF filter fails through 55k miles. Really! GM extended my warranty to 100k miles and did a $ 3.5k exhaust replacement. I still got the 11th failure! Then I started adding Hotshots fuel additive and haven't had a DPF failure in 50k miles! Wow. There's a good recent YouTube video showing Optilube XPD is much better. So much better that it's been sold out for weeks. Oh well, I'll stick with the Hotshots until I can find some. I think it partly points to the uneven quality of diesel fuel. Despite all my early problems I love the truck and haven't paid a dime for maintenance other than normal maintenance like oil changes and one set of tires. 29 MPG through 70k until I added bed/roof rails and now 27 mpg. And yes I do a lot of highway miles but not exclusively. Love my diesel.

Thank you for your reply. Is your truck that you get that kind of fuel mileage a diesel or a gas? And is it 4 x 4? Thanks again.
At 103k, I consistently get 22-24 City and 28-30 Hwy (calculated-not DIC), however I have a light foot! Also, the DuraMax has a nice torque punch at low rpms compared to the V6 if you plan on any towing.

Good luck with your decision!

Thank you for your reply. I see you added a catch can do you think that helps and is yours completely stock or do you have a tune on it? Thank you.

I added my Provent 200 at 7.5k, and I drain it during every oil change. Considering the 4-6 oz of gunk that comes out each time, it was a good decision. Other than adding a transmission dipstick, my truck Is OEM insofar as drive train.

Another tip which has been referred to in many posts in various threads is to add a good quality fuel additive at every fueling for lubricity and cetane boost. My go to additive has been Power Service Diesel Kleen since day one, but there are other quality additives out there.

The ideas for adding the Provent and transmission dipstick came from following the ColoradoDiesel.org site discussions these past years. That site and this one are good sources of info.
