Cabin air filter arrow direction.

I’m getting mixed answers on up or down. I replaced mine. And swore the arrows were up indicating upward air flow.

Second guessing myself because the top side of the filter is the dirty side. If the air flow was upwards, wouldn’t the bottom of the filter be dirty?

Mine always had arrows down and trapped dirt on top.

EDIT: here's a video I found on the interwebs that confirms arrows should point down. But if you pay close attention, the filter they pulled out had an arrow pointing up. [emoji23]
Exactly. So I’m not nuts. Mine was definitely up. I mean what’s the downside of it being backwards? Restricted air flow.

Air should be coming from outside to the blower motor.

So air flow should be in a downward direction.

A Dealership Quick-Lube service installed mine wrong (air flow up).
I found the error while doing a DIY filter change.

The filter will work up or down . . .
However, they work much better when installed in the correct orientation to the air flow.

These are multi-stage (layer) filters. The 'air holes' on the layer Facing the incoming air are larger than the 'air holes' on the opposite side outer most layer when in the correct orientation. So when installed backwards the filter will clog faster and there will be a deeper layer of dirt/dust on the filter then when they are installed with the correct orientation.

To me it’s pretty simple it’s just as your furnace filter has an arrow showing air flow. The arrow shows direction of air flow. On your furnace the air comes from the outside and flows toward the furnace. Your cabin filter gets its air coming into the top of of the filter. So therefore the arrow would go down showing direction of the air flow just like your furnace outside to inside.

Just changed my own (2016 Colorado), and it was indeed installed upside down, with the air flow indication pointing upward. WTF!?!

Well it only matters if the Cabin Air Filter actually has a "sticky" side, to catch debris and smaller particles

Yes since the Air is coming from the higher part of the firewall to the Cabin Air Filter in our trucks the Arrow should point down
But, unless you are you a specialixed filter that has a "sticky" side. It does not matter
The air will flow through fine.
I have seen them come from the Factory by all the Manufactures with the Arrows pointing in the wrong direction
