Belt Tensioner, how long?

I am supposed to have my tensioner replaced two weeks from now. They are telling me two days, but I a leaning toward not doing it at all. Its only a squeak...an annoying squeak...but I don't want them taking apart the engine. They told me they have to take apart a large part of the engine and it will take two days. I am no mechanic but this sounds like a bunch of bs to me.

I've been told it's at the rear of the engine and they drop the tranny to get to it.

It's the Balance shaft chain tensioner.

They told me its not necessary to get this repaired. Is this true? I am trying to decide if its worth the hassle for just a chirping sound that last 10 seconds.

Thanks

It's not...

...the Balance Shaft Chain Tensioner replacement eliminates the "turbo-type" whine that some early production engines had. This sound occurs 24/7 while at about 1500-2500 rpm. It doesn't matter how long the engine has been running. Some engines have it worse than others, but it IS an "optional" replacement. I mentioned it to my dealer in passing; he asked for info from this board and had a tech investigate further. They did the work without hesitation.

I'm glad I had it done because I can hear the REAL engine and exhaust sounds rather than the whine.

If your sound only lasts 10 seconds, it's most likely NOT due to the BSCT.

Well, I cancelled the repairs. I would not describe mine as a turbo whine. Mine sounds like a belt squealing, but it only does it when I start it after the truck sits for hours at a time (like overnight). After I drive for a few minutes, the sound is gone.

Does this still sound like the tensioner needs ot be replaced? I am going to a different dealership for repairs and maintenance now, so I will see what they say if it really starts to annoy me. Its difficult for them to hear it because by the time I drive it there, it is no longer making the noise.

The issue I had was last week the temps were below 10F, and the humity was very low. The serpitine belt would not stop squealing. I was driving 60 miles /day and it did not stop the whole time, even after warming up.

It warmed up and rained alot and it finally shut up, but I had the dealer replace the belt. They said it was glazed and replaced it under warranty.

So i'd suggest you have the dealer order a belt and replace the belt and see if it goes away. I'd suggest you call because it seems they dont stock this part yet.

I decided to give it another shot, this time at the new dealer. I am leaving it overnight Thursday into Friday morning.

I have the parts on order for this problem...they told me when I do it that they will have it back that same day.

I get a whine in the morning, but I mostly get a engine noise at 2K rpms...they say it is not the heat sheild. The whine doesn't bother me much it is the lawn mower noise that is bothering me.

I am getting a second opinion because mine isn't a whine. Its a chirp...like a bird... when I start the truck after it sits overnight or for several hours.

If you listen to my exhaust sound clip (here: http://www.naivesoftware.com/colorado/gibson.mp3) , you'll hear the tensioner whine when I rev the truck.
That's exactly it... when he lets off the throttle you can hear the "turbo" spool-down in the background.

Brinsmaid, your description does not fit the tensioner issue.

I have heard your exhaust file and I am interested in hearing more because I am considering the gibson exhaust.

But back to this point...I think the dealer I went to is totally wrong about the problem my truck has. I dod not have a whine at all. It sounds exactly like a bird chirping or a squeaky wheel on a grocery cart.

I totally agree. Do you guys have any idea what could cause my chirping problem? Someone here mentioned a serpantine belt.

Sounds like a serpentine belt issue. Does the sound get worse/better with the AC on or off (causing the AC compressor to engage)?
The first dealer I went to for this issue told me that the tensioner needed to be replaced and that they would need to drop the transmission to get to it. I decided to get a second opinion. The second dealer I went to just finished up looking at my truck. They said they had a bulletin for the serpantine belt. According to them, the original belt was too long...just by a little.

well I lied...I dropped it off wednesday morning and they are saying it maybe ready friday if not by saturday morning.

Guy said something about having to take 4x4 off, transmission ect.....wish they had told me how long it was actually going to take. I don't like being without a vehicle this long.
