I know some people have opted to put vinyl here but I would personally prefer a more factory look with actual hard plastic trim pieces. Anyone try or come across any good makes out there for this yet?

Vinyl is what they use from the factory, probably all that's available at this time. Mine came with vinyl. Aftermarket stuff has been slow to come out for these things it seams.
Bumping this thread again in hopes for some new information. According to this GMAuthority article this trim piece exists on all trims besides the Trail Boss and Work Truck. Also it seems some trucks are optioned with or without it?
go to a dealer lot and you will see it is Vinyl go to Hobby Lobby or even Walmart in their art dept and buy a roll of what ever color you want and flat/gloss/matt/sparkles etc...
I bet any tint shop or sign maker would do at minimal cost. We have company trucks lettered with our logos at our shop, I ask them for remnants every so often for my little projects.
