I've been looking for a way to upgrade the output of my stock projectors and high beams. I came across an easy mod where you use a 9011 HIR bulb in place of the stock 9005 high beams.

The 9011 HIR puts out just over 2500 lumens. It's much brighter and whiter light than the stock 9005.

Best of all, I didn't have to trim the locking tabs on the bulb. These fit the Canyon housing perfectly!

As for the H11 low beam, you basically do the same thing as above but you swap it for an H9 bulb, which puts out considerably more lumens than the stock H11. However, you do have to trim the base and the locking tabs on the H9 bulb. Here's some pics I found online... Picture says for fog light housing, but it's the same mod for our headlight housing.

These two mods keep the same stock beam pattern, but both are much brighter and whiter light.

Just out of curiosity. How is this better than just going to a higher output version of the stock bulb?

If the stock low beam bulb is say a 35w, h11; then why not upgrade it to a 55w h11?

H11 Stock "high" output(info from Autozone)
Compatible Bulb Number: H11

H9 Modded Bulb(info from Autozone)
Compatible Bulb Number: H9

High Beam Wattage: 55
Lumens: 2099

Longer life, more light output for VERY minimal work with hand tools.. (Serious takes 5 minutes with a pair of sidecutter and a utility knife to mod the base of the H9.

Granted, this is only a "safe" mode in projector style housings. Because the H9 does not have the coated tip that the H11 has.

Cost is comparable between the two, and the light increase is great. I've been running with setup for 4 months and I have NOT been flashed yet with no adjustment to my headlights.

There is a similar bump in light output from the 9005 to the 9011 for the high beams..

I did this in my truck. There was a noticeable increase in light output. Downside is the higher output bulbs will not last as long.

The bump between the 9005 and 9011 for those who havn't looked is the following:

Lumens 9005: 1700
Lumens 9011: 2700

Avg life 9005: 350hrs
Avg life 9011: 500hrs

I did the 9011 upgrade last year and really like them, even though 95% of my night time driving is urban driving so do not get to use them much
thinking about doing the H9 upgrade for my low beams rather then LED's

I installed Philips H11 X-tremeVision bulbs.
Wattage: 55
Lumens: 1947
Color Temperature: 3400 (Appears much whiter than the stock bulbs)
Rated Life: 300+ Hours

Yes, they cost more, however I'm very satisfied with them. They're not HID or LED, however are a good improvement over stock.
I did install the DRL relocate harness so I won't be "burning" them all day.

I’m more likely to go with the halogen replacement considering the few bcm freak outs with led conversions.
At this point I don’t know if they are connected, my personal experience and thoughts would tend that they are not, however the LED light conversion is the common denominator and one dealer (whom I don’t trust as most hire avg at best mechanics) said it was a direct cause.

As such, I am going to wait on the led light upgrade (if needed) until after everyone figures out if the bcm uses the light circuit for any sort of base line. Who knows, I want to say it doesn’t, but the crap the bcm does now and how sensitive computers are, I guess it is possible...

Sorry for the total thread jack.

When I do the bumper light bar brackets I will
Do the brighter halogens.

I did this mod a while back. Although it is noticeably brighter they still suck. Ended up with after market projectors and 55 watt HIDs.

Reviving an old thread to see if anyone has any long-term feedback on the H9 bulbs? Specifically, any issues with the extra heat? I suspect these run hotter than the stock H11.

Not super long term, I've had H9 halogens in for around 8 months and haven't had any problems. I do have the DRL relocation mod so my low beams aren't my DRLs anymore which I'm sure helps with heat, etc. TBH, the higher wattage has always been a little bit of a concern in the back of my mind but if the choice is being able to see well or generating a little less heat I'll choose being able to see well. Prior to the H9s I was running some Sealight LEDs, they were marginally better than stock. I also tried the Diode Dynamics SL1s and wasn't happy with them either (not much of a hotspot, light output was pretty diffused and not focused well) and returned them. That's when I switched to the H9s.

I've heard and seen a lot of good feedback regarding the Auxito H11 LEDs, so out of boredom and curiosity I decided to order a pair. I'll post up initial impressions and comparisons to the H9 probably this weekend.

thanks for the feedback. I too have gone through a lot of light options. The first leds were Sealight and they were better but one failed a few months after installation. They did not have a replacement so refunded my money. Next I tried DD SL1 which like you, I was not impressed with. Next up was a set of Lasfit LEDs but the passenger side has started to randomly flicker after 22 months of service.

@kcmtnbiker I still need to take some pics, but these Auxito H11 LEDs are the best upgrade I've done to the factory lights (aside from replacing the factory fogs with DD SS3s) and are the 5th bulbs I've used for the lows; OEM, Sealight S1 (banned), DD SL1, H9 mod, and the Auxito H11. The OEMs were the worst, the Sealight and DD were pretty equal and marginally better than OEM, the H9 definitely put out better light than the previous 3 bulbs (OEM, Sealight, and DD all resulted in me having to run my fogs with them in order to see comfortably). I was missing having all LEDs (cosmetically, having LED everything but low beams just seemed out of place) so I decided to try the Auxito as others had positive things to say. They're definitely a great upgrade for anyone that has the OEM projector housings. I can't comment on how well they work with the reflector housings, but I suspect they would cause a bit of scatter/glare which is common with LEDs in reflector housings. I've got a solid hotspot in front of the truck and they actually overpower my DD SS3 Pro fogs directly in front of my truck but the fogs still light up the sides of the road better. They also fit with the factory dust covers.

Here's a quick video showing low, low+high, low+fog.

Thank you for this detailed review. I'm tempted to buy based on your feedback but I fiddled around with my passenger side this weekend and found the connection was loose. I snapped it together tightly and haven't had any random flickers since. But it's only been two nights of driving. I'll keep the Lasfits for a bit longer to see how they hold up.
