I’ve been using a bed extender (locked into the hitch) for my 12’ kayaks and its working pretty well so far. I did pad it with one of those pool noodles to soften the impact on the yaks. No problems yet

What are you using in your 5.5' bed to haul kayaks? Bed extenders, over the cab, etc?

I'm thinking this. My kayaks are 10'

That looks like the one I picked up. The only thing I did was pad the cross bar with one of those pool noodles and use a bit of truck cap foam tape on the uprights.

so far this has worked out really well for us. I fit the 2 ‘Yaks side by side and it’s been super easy to load and tie ‘em in.
