Hi all, I just got my '24 Tundra bought back with Lemon Law due to ongoing transmission issues and I'm really eyeing down a Colorado or Canyon due to the price tag. Lets me honest, new fullsize trucks are a lot of $$$

Has anyone stepped down from a full size to a mid size? I really like the feeling of being in a full size truck in terms of safety. All that room and being higher than most cars definitely gives me peace of mind from all the crazy drivers down here in Florida. We are planning on having a kid in the next few years so obviously safety is a priority when it comes to which vehicle I'll be purchasing.

What are your thoughts on safety in regards to these trucks and fullsize? Is there much of a difference?

Nope. Mid-size trucks are not the tin cans of the 70's through 2000 mid-size trucks, I have had them...

Depending on what model you get, you can be as high or higher than a full size. In my ZR2 Desert Boss I often pull up next to an F150, Tundra, or Silverado and am looking down on them. My DB sits higher than the Tundra I drove before this - granted it was a Gen 1 Tundra so smaller than the current Gen Tundras.

As for safety - haven't seen any crash tests on the Gen 3s yet, but I'm sure they will be out soon.

Perhaps consulting the folks that do crash testing would be best. None of us work in actual crash testing, so it would just be personal opinions with no hard data.

They don't have 3rd Gen results yet, so the 2022 will have to do for your comparison.

I would say safety is firstly in the hands of the drivers habits, but the visibility of a midsize nowadays is very good. Parked next to a fullsize from 10yrs ago, it dwarfs it somehow. Additionally, a midsize is going to be more maneuverable and also narrower/shorter, giving it an advantage for escaping bad situations over a fullsize.

I stepped down from a 2500HD Duramax and it was night and day. I wouldn't go back to daily driving an HD truck... maybe a fullsize, but modern midsize is just right IMO.

I went from a Dodge 2500 4X4 SLT diesel to my Canyon Denali diesel. Comfort and ease of maneuverability are greatly improved. The Dodge SLT to GMC Denali trim levels isn’t a fair comparison nor is it fair to compare the 5.9 Cummins to the 2.8 Duramax. My Canyon feels much more controllable and secure in the handling department. The extra 10 mpg isn’t disappointing either. The third gens mileage may not be that much of an advantage over a full size. If you have a large dog, talk to them. Mine isn’t happy with her loss of back seat room!🤣

Yeah, it is important the dog is comfortable
My Boxer loved the room she had in my Tahoe, TransAm, Equinox and Ex-Wifes Windstar

I went from a Silverado to a Colorado. The Silverado is quite a bit bigger, especially in the back seats, and front to be honest, and it’s only about a $1,000 more. But keep in mind that the Colorado was a full size truck in 2000. As far as safety it is a full frame truck. As far a room, don’t get the extended cab in the Colorado it’s only good for kids to about 6yrs old, in the Silverado the extended cab is good to about 15-16. I live in the City now and wanted something smaller, it is a lot easier to get around. Defiantly go to the dealer and set in the back seat. If you want a V8 or even a V6 you have to go with the Silverado.

Don't know about the Midsize, however, if they build them like my 05 Colorado and my 06 Canyon, they impressed the heck out of me.

I owned a 05 Colorado Xtreme. Some young kid in a Nissan Pathfinder hit me head on while he was texting. We were both doing about 50mph. I truly believe that I am alive today because of how well the Colorado/Canyon design is in these vehicles. The 05 was destroyed, but I wasn't. A little sore, but still alive. It is why I bought the 06. It saved me once. I'll trust it again. If the new midsize are built as well, I would recommend it.

@delta1seven I have a 2009 Silverado and bought a 2023 Colorado last year. Both are WT, RWD models. I needed something to pull a small travel trailer, which my '09 was not set up for.
The step in height is 1" lower on the Colorado. The hitch and tailgate height are the same. It is a bit narrower, but that is really mostly in the width of the center console. Handling in the wind is similar to the Silverado.
The seats sit more like a car (lower to the floor board), but the drivers has a manual lift on the drivers side, even on the base model.
Safety wise, I feel as comfortable in the Colorado as I am in the Silverado.
My biggest complaint is the lack of a tilting headrest.

Traded my Ram for a2023 Colorado Z71. Happy at first but a lot of problems. Chevy Dealer can not duplicate the problem, works as it should . Advance Cruise does not work from day one on window sticker in very small print future update??? Was supposed to be November/ December it is now April no one knows anything. Auto headlights come on when very dark out. After putting in reverse and into drive reverse camera stays on. Bottom rubber on drivers side has plastic clips keeps coming off. Safety lights on mirrors flashing no audio. Etc
