Don't you think it quite ironic that with the amount of chrome removal and chrome delete and Pasti-dipping that takes place within this community that Chevrolet had the sheer audacity to place chrome on our KEY FOBS as well!?!?!? :)

I actually like the feel of the Colorado key fob in my hand - compared to my sons Cruze fob or my wife's Traverse fob - the Colorado fob as a much more tactile and substantial feel to it - but I never liked the aesthetics of the fob itself - looking at it - its ugly. It looks like a bulk order that Chevrolet had to "use up" before they could get to something better that has some semblance of style. They had 5 million of them laying around from Tahoe's and Yukon's and they said Viola! - we will add chrome wings and use them for the Colorado as well! Now to be fair - have you seen some of the Ford, Toyota or Jeep fobs - good hell - horrible. If I paid $70K for a Ford Raptor and the dealer handed me that horrible fob I would be like - "you have to be kidding".

So what is a Colorado owner to do? Here is what you do - you go to the AJT Designs website and buy a replacement fob. I think that they look light years better than the stock FOB, they actually have style and will be more rugged and shock resistant over time. And here is the best part, you get to customize the fob to our own tastes - novel idea. You can get a black, gray, orange, blue, red, hunter green, lime green, white or tan fob - and get this - you can then customize the button color AND the screw/hardware color used to put the whole thing together. Creating a completely custom design for your fob based solely on your own preferences.

Now the process does require you to disassemble your current Chevrolet fob and pull out three parts -

  1. Battery
  2. Battery contact
  3. Printed Circuit Board
And then clear instructions are given via a video of how to replace these parts into the new fob to ensure its fully functional. The Chevrolet fob is not easy to get apart - especially ours with the chrome wings - but it is doable and I was able to salvage the OEM fob case in case it is ever needed in the future. The kit comes with the proper allen key to insert and tighten down the screws on your new fob as well.

In the end - you get a fully functional key fob that looks like this:

393396

Comparatively about the same length and width as the old fob - but with a MUCH improved feel in your hand and one that can potentially take some abuse and not crap out prematurely. I chose a gray case, with black button and red screws to match my Shadow Gray Metallic Colorado. I think its a very nice match. You could even order more than one color buttons or screws and really mix things up if you wanted to.

The fob is $35 with free shipping. I ordered mine on 7/1 and it was delivered on 7/6 - which I thought was fantastic service. Mine shipped the same day it was ordered. I will most likely replace the other fob housing in the near term with the same type - may a different color so that the family knows which key is MY KEY.

The company has some tremendous products from shift knobs, to climate control rings to vent rings - but none of that for Chevy yet. They are heavily Toyota invested at this point, but hopefully will expand their product line the future to include more GM coverage.

Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks for bringing this up for the newbies, as I think there is a 62 page thread on the AJT fob...

I like my OEM FOB, if dropped at night in the pasture the chrome will shne with a flashlight. I hunt but do not buy camo flashlights, knives and other stuff I may drop...

You dropping the keys in the pasture quite a bit? :) I would not call the new fob camo by any means, just better looking and more durable.

I like mine, except for the fact that the buttons dont click sometimes. Not sure if its something that can be adjusted. Had my AJT fob for almost a year i think.

and when did chevy change to that weird looking key top? Mines square looking, not rounded. haha

I just assembled my AJT tonight. I destroyed my old silver winged devil. The buttons on my old fob were totally worn flat. Seems pretty nice, I agree with assessment.

I have to ask how the "silver winged devil" bit the dust? Dropped off a rocky cliff? Ran over in the driveway?

What color fob did you get from AJT?

What year is your truck? Mine is a 2020 so the rounded key could be the "new shape".

The "silver wing devil" had literally worn the buttons out, and the rubber coating over the button pads had delaminated. I wasn't real careful on the disassembly, so I destroyed the plastic removing the silver wings. My keys are basically in one of 3 places at all times: On my dresser waiting to be put in my pants' pocket, in my pants' pocket, or in the ignition. I have dropped it a time or two I guess.

I went with simple black, nothing fancy. Black srews, black remote, grey & red buttons. I used red for the panic, and I used red for the door lock to stand out. Rest are grey. It is dull, but I am not into flashy. Again, it is either in the ignition or my pocket most of the time.

I am pleased with the design and assembly. I have seen issues with other plastic remotes. My garage door opener housing is one where i have seen issues with the buttons not working. I was worried this would be the case with the AJT design, but it fit well together and after 15 hours of ownership, no complaints.

It has been a long time since I took geometry, from the same teacher who taught my uncle. He must have been a troublemaker, because she remembered him and blamed me for all of his shortcomings. Only time I ever got kicked out of a class in my life. Anyway, I think my key is more trapezoidal in appearance as opposed to rounded or square.

I actually had trouble finding the thread that @Hunter62 mentioned. Took me a while to find the AJT link to order. I ordered late on a Friday, so it was Monday before they did much with my order. Took 2-3 days to ship, then we had the 4th of July holiday, so it took 11 days to reach me. I tracked it after shipping, and the holiday definitely impacted the USPS shipment. In any event, I purchased the AJT design not because it is rugged looking, but simply because my old one was plumb worn out. I imagine you could do some interesting things with the color schemes, if you are not half color blind like me. I am told cataract surgery could fix some of my issues.

I was able to get mine apart with a little bit less carnage - that if I ever had to use it again - I could. I don't plan to. I think that the soft rubber buttons on the Chevrolet remote are obviously the weak point of the remote. That same weak point does not exist in the AJT design from my perspective. In your case where they are just worn out, I'm sure many people just go to the dealer and pay an exorbitant fee to get a new remote and have it programmed. Not know that these injection fobs exist.

I should have gone with a red panic button - may do that in the future - can always order a set of red buttons.

@CaryBosse Could I get a picture of your all black one? I'm not a huge fan of this design but I'm so tired of the chrome bouncing reflections around the cab on a sunny day.

They do look nice. I went with the silicone jacket. They hold up nice.

I drop a lot of things, in the pasture, in the ditch, from a tree, sometimes I even drop things in my pockets and still cannot find them...

Just installed(?) mine yesterday. I boringly went with all black. I have completely de-chromed my truck (except the headlights), so I had to get rid of the chrome key fob. I've had AJT fobs for my 4Runners for years and they hold up really well.

I really think that they could do without the text on the buttons - I can't even read mine except in bright light or a maginifying glass. That is why I put my panic and lock buttons in a different color. I set off my alarm a couple of times with my worn out remote buttons because I couldn't remember the PANIC and START locations.

I don't think I realized that was an option. I would have done panic in red.

Just have to purchase an extra set of buttons - is only $4 when you purchase with the covers, and free shipping. If I really would have been thinking, I would have ordered a set of black as well, and used the black in the two positions for the liftgate that we don't have.

I see what you are saying - and the LOCK button does have the "nubs" on it so you can feel it as being unique in the dark...without having to see the lettering.
