So I've been wanting a black bowtie for the front of my truck for a while, and I really find it dumb to spend 50+ bucks to buy one, so I decided to do it myself.

I'm sure there's a ton of forums on this, but here's how to black out your front bowtie without spending the 50 bucks it cost to buy one. (you can make it any color to match your truck, mines just black)

What you need:
Small Wrench or socket to unscrew your bowtie
Spray Can of car paint(Whatever color you want)- $4 at Kragen
Spray Can of clear paint(optional, but I recommend it) -$5 at Kragen
Some newspaper or box to paint on.
Sandpaper to rough it(if it needs it)

1- Take your front end off so you can reach to unscrew the bowtie

2- Unscrew the backing off the bowtie using a wrench or socket.

3- Clean your bowtie so no dust or more commonly bugs will be under the paint so you can have a smooth finish. Use some sand paper to rough it, it will stick better(i didnt do this because mine already was a little rough)

4- If you want to easily paint it, take a small cardboard box of some sort and poke the screws on the bowtie into it so it lays flat, making it easier to paint.

5- Take your colored spray paint(mine's black metallic to match my truck) and evenly spray your bowtie. Make sure you hold you hand about 10 inches away so you dont get any runs.

6- Apply a second coat after the first has dried if you want to double coat it. If not, skip this step.

7- Apply a clear top coat(you don't HAVE too, but I did just to be safe). Again, spray about 10 inches away so you won't get any runs.

8- Let it dry for a while.

9- Put your bowtie back on...

10- Done! There you go! A black(or whatever color you choose) bowtie to match your truck that cost less than 10 bucks!

Here's what my truck looks like now.

whats that on ur last pic.? is it coming off?
looks like a reflection

it also wouldn't hurt to scuff it with some scotchbrite or sandpaper first to allow the paint to stick better

Great writeup. Something a lot of people on here will suggest when doing this is to a) sand with sandpaper to make the surface a little rough, and easier to stick to. And b) use adhesion promoter as a base coat before spraying the color to it. This will aid in, you guessed it, paint adhesion to the bowtie.

yeah it was a reflection, and yeah i would recommend roughing it, mine already was a little roughed i dont know if you could see that in the first pic or not... but it turned out pretty sweet. posted a new pic, and it's pretty well on there i washed my truck today and scrubbed it with soap to test how durable it was, did nothing. i guess time will tell.

IIRC the nuts on the back of the bowtie are 10mm. Its a nice quick easy mod that turns out real nice. I did my bowtie with bedliner. Black always looks good on the bowties, I dont care what color your truck is.

It's a good mod to do. Really changes up the way the truck looks without spending a lot. Be sure to let the paint cure before slapping it back on. If you don't, it will chip easily and you'll wind up doing it several times. Don't ask me how I know this.

Let it cure for several days after you put on the last coat of clear. The more coats of paint/clear, the longer it needs to cure so each layer hardens properly. Once I did that, it's been good for a couple of years now with no more chipping.

Also, if you make a mistake, don't sweat it. "Oops" takes it off really well and you can start over. "Oops" is available at Wal-Mart and is inexpensive.

yeah, well kragen didn't have any other clear coat, and it doesn't really matter for something small like this. if it were something bigger, i'd wait and find normal clear coat.

Hey Man, Im new to the site. I have a 2005 Z71 Colly and this guide helped out alot on this simple mod. Thanks alot!
