i have an 04 z71... i hit a pot hole about a year ago and the traction fault doesnt go off... i honestly think it just snapped a wire in the back or something... but about 2 years ago my cruise control quit working for about 2 weeks and randomly started working again... well now its doing it again.. i use cruise control a whole lot and its killing me not being able to... i've disconnected the battery thinking it would reset the system... anyone have any ideas?! ive also tried swearing at it and snatching the blinker around thinking it was a faulty button and it didnt work..

OH!! and ill try it and like 1 out of 20 tries it works... thought that might help

I do know there was a recall for the brake lights and cruise control not working on the earlier trucks. But I think that when it broke it didn't come back on. In my 2004 Z85, every once in a while the cruise control wouldn't work, then it would start working again. I got the recall notice after I traded it in so I don't know what the fix was. I would check recalls on early models you will find it. I'm sure tons of people here know what I'm talking about. But your brake lights would stop working too if this is the problem.

Not fuses. Check the colorado recalls. It's like a resistor or something(man that sounds stupid) I don't remember what it's called. Somebody here as the answer. I'll see if I can find it but do a search. It's a recall and a dealer should give the part for free. Or call GM.
This is a really old problem, like 2005, 2006.

It's a brake light switch, I think. Just search here. type in " Brake light switch"

Here's what Naskie 18 wrote:

The GM part number for the switch is 15912229, and its about $10 from a GM dealer. They should even have it in stock, due to the recall...and you should be able to get it replaced under recall despite the lack of warranty. Recalls are not limited to vehicles within warranty. Take it to the dealer and make them perform the recall (and they may have an updated part number for it, depending on whether or not GM released a new part).

And if they haven't released a new part number for it, or if when you had it performed the first time they hadn't released a new part number, you should be able to have them perform it again at no charge to you.

Have you changed any of your lights (maybe your 3rd brake light) to LED's? This seems to be an issue in our trucks. Other members have changed out their 3rd brake lights to those EBAY LED taillights and then the cruise control stops working.

It's the brake light switch. It is a recall. It should be a free fix at the dealer. Have them look it up. Let us know how you make out. Good luck :D

Helllppp

I have an 04 Colorado and at 70 mph it usually runs at 2100 RPM and now its running at 2500 and never settles out and my cruise control has went out when this started happening as well. I checked the transmission fluid and its fine and the trucks shifting into overdrive and shifting fine. I was wondering if anyone my have a an idea what it is!

hey all, I realize that this is an old post, but I am having very similar issues, my brake lights sometimes stay when driving, and sometimes just come on after sitting for a few hours, and my cruise control which has always worked intermitenly (sP) no longer works at all- it stopped working a couple of months ago...could this all be related to the brake switch?

no cart, it has not, and I was reading further after this post and it does all seem to be connected, have put a call into the dealership for "expert" advice as it seems there was recall on the switch..am going to search thru my papers as I might have gotten a recall notice

I too noticed that my cruise control was not working and that I didn't have any rear brake lights (of all places to determine the failure I was on the interstate).

Here is what I did to determine whether or not my switch was bad - I removed the switch which is located behind the brake pedal. The top of the switch was badly scorched (maybe a possible overheating issue? IDK). After determining that it was indeed faulty - I went to my nearest Chevy stealership and the switch was replaced.

On the Colorado on the brake. Left switch is for the brake lights and GM put bad switches in it. On the right side, the switch fails and cruise control will not turn on. You can take the switch apart and clean the contacts or purchase a new one and replace easy.
