Would you buy? Or run?

Hey everyone , I'm on the hunt for a 1st Gen 4x4 on a super tight budget ... I came accross one that is perfectly in budget but comes with trade offs of course.

Mechanically he says it's been good , always reliable , he's the third owner . One of the previous owners was a tree faller so it was constantly driven into the bush but apparently all shocks were replaced after that.

  1. Cosmetically there's a lot of scratches and little dents overall and the interior of the box is pretty banged up ... Kinda sucks, but isn't a total deal breaker as I was planning to paint whatever I got flat black anyways.

My main concerns...
350k km
Rusty underneath ( see pic )
Been sitting most of a year (fired up right away )

sooo... Would you buy if cheap enough ?(what would you offer/pay ?)
Would you walk away? Would you run lol 😂

I’d run.

Too many 1st Gen 4x4s out there to choose from to get high mileage and rust.

I routinely see guys picking up used Collys with low mileage and good maintenance records.

The frame rust on that one looks pretty bad. The frames usually rust on the surface but that one looks serious.

Keep looking around and you’ll find one in better shape. Their prices keep declining in the used market.

Just out of curiosity, what year and engine is that one?

Can’t be cheap enough with the Rust problem. With this being only your 2nd post, we hate to sound this negative, but we are looking out for your best interest and you did ask for input.

Run.

Bad body’s will drive, bad frames will break.

The owner of that truck might make more money, parting that one out, might!
Thank you everyone!
This is exactly why I came here , honest real answers . I grew up in a car family , but I also know what some people may not even consider , others will based on condition and work they are willing to do.
Seller wants $3500, I had offered 2grand at most for it at first glance , he wanted more but accepted ... But I let him know I'm going to research a bit more regarding the condition underneath and if it's worth it to me to risk it ....

As I said , super tight budget. I miss having a truck but also don't need to get stranded 30km in the bush lol 😂

I found another , MUCH better condition and about 60k less km , but $4500 ...

What year is this one? And what engine. . I4 or I5 ? Also.. . the year matters because there were engine improvements . I would really try for a 2007 or newer.
I'm 70 trs old and have been buying/trading/selliing off cars for 50 years.......RUN AWAY!

If you're that limited in funds I'd suggest an even older Ranger. Those were pretty bulletproof, the main issue being water pumps. Motorbiscuit (sp?) just did an article saying buying a 1992 Ranger would be an invitation to have a lot of future repairs, and since little they say is correct, that's probably a good sign!
