What tune should I get???

9872 Views 31 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  GreenDiesel
Ive owned my 2020 Colorado ZR2 Diesel for about 2 years now 45000km and im getting to that point where i need to start upgrading and adding some more fun to my daily drive. I use the truck for just about everything from my daily commute to towing, and off-roading of course. Im interested in getting a tune with a switch on the fly capabilities however, im having a tough time finding reputable companies/tuners. Ive read through the forums on what has been posted already for the Diesel tuning, though could not find a concrete winner here. So what do you have and what do you think i should get.

Leave recommendations and links are also helpful....

If you skipped everything in a nutshell i want a switch on the fly tune with trans tuning also.

Thanks...

As long as you understand the possible ramifications of a tune, should a problem arise, then read through the exhaustive posts that have been made in the diesel section (where this topic has been beaten to death) and make your choice. Be aware that many of the tunes originating in the US have effectively been outlawed by the EPA and may no longer be available.

hold out to see what the new turbo brings to the game. thats my move
I've seen several people running a tune from a Canadian company, HD Diesel Supply. That's all I can offer, sorry. There's probably a few threads still lingering
In your shoes, I would get a plug in throttle booster that is removable.
Pedal Commanders come up for sale here often. Get one for ( PC-07) on the cheap and play with it. All reversible.
Just don't pay full price for any plug in Throttle controller.

You need to state your trucks year model.
"Ive owned my **** for about two years" isn't usable information. We usually need more specific model information to help out.
Subscribed.

If not pursuing a weight loss program, there are a plethora of tuners available south of the border. GDE immediately comes to mind as a reputable tuner with both ECM/TCM tuning.

If pursuing a weight loss program, reaching out (calling) to a few Canadian suppliers may net you some results. I don't believe mentioning any of those suppliers by name would be wise for several reasons.

Another upvote for GDE here. They've got an EPA-friendly tune now that gives better performance and fuel economy with longevity of the engine in mind. They've also been really helpful about answering more in-depth questions about the tech behind the tune if you're interested in learning more about tuning in general.

Is GDE just diesels?
Is GDE just diesels?
Yes sir, just Diesels.

one of my issues with EPA certified tunes is they have to maintain the "xxx miles till speed limited" feature which can be a big problem on road trips.

I've had NoX sensors go out in the middle of nowhere , hate to imagine what that would have meant with EPA or stock tune .
Calibrated Power/Duramax Tuner has a 50 State EO approved tune for the 2.8.
I installed the updated tune on my original Sport/Tow tune last month and had no issues on getting my truck to pass emissions testing here in CA.

If not pursuing a weight loss program, . . ..
That went over my head when posted--another thread today brought meaning.
Yeah im probably going to go with the weight loss program because from what i hear is that the emissions systems on these trucks start having problems after a certain point. Its sad to see the EPA killing of business's products because not all of us want to roll coal we just want a reliable diesel without the hassle of the emissions systems that cost thousands to fix should they fail. Ive alrea looked into the Canadian companies that offer the tunes, however i was looking for a company that offers switch on the flies but still can't seem to find any that offer wight loss versions of that. I know duramax tuner has that feature in they're tunes but its not weight loss friendly.

Just checked their website. They do not offer anything for the 2.8 duramax.

Yeah use dirty diesel customs from Canada they offer “compliant” tunes for weight loss programs.

Yeah I don't really keep track, that comment was aimed at the Canadian guy as well.

I know this isn't helpful to you, but you probably are not going to find a lot of help on here since deleting is illegal by federal law. You'll be hard pressed to find a delete tune now in the US. Also with the way the wind is blowing with the EPA's law enforcement arm I'm not sure I would recommend anyone delete nowadays. 2018 ? Sure, if it fit your needs. Not now. The EPA is probably just about finished up going after all the delete tuners in America and may even start going after individuals named in the records I'm sure they received during the investigation or subpoenaed at some point.

42 U.S.C. § 7522(a)(3)(A) states: [Enumerated prohibition] for any person to remove or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this subchapter prior to its sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser, or for any person knowingly to remove or render inoperative any such device or element of design after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser; or

Definition of a motor vehicle: (2) The term “motor vehicle” means any self-propelled vehicle designed for transporting persons or property on a street or highway.
The key word here is "designed"; the actual usage of the truck really never mattered (A common "bypass" for delete tuners was to have the buyer sign an "Offroad only" agreement)

I'm more Interested in tuning. Unfortunately the spade tuner offers single tune from 2019 and up. I just happen to have a 2019. No flexibility with a single tune. GM must have changed their protocols on the 2019 and up.

Are you looking for a weight loss tune or a compliant tune ?

I believe it's a new/different ECM programming from GM. I believe they're also password locked/encrypted. I've seen some posts/advertisements for pre 2019 which doesn't require your VIN+Unlock fee.

What is the benefit of multiple tune profiles over a single ? I guess in my mind I'd rather have something that is safe/reliable/works 100% of the time rather than having to remember to change one more thing before getting into a certain situation (towing vs street driving, etc...).
