Reverse lights stuck on

1375 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ddawson
Recently I noticed that both of my reverse lights are stuck on, in park and in drive. They get brighter when truck is placed into reverse. The bulbs are LED. I also noticed the when the vehicle is started the lights start out very dim and get a little brighter. There is a flicker to it.
Could it be the park, neutral, reverse switch (on transmission), a fuse or something else?.
Also I have this device called Speed Turtle, it’s wired in, it alternates on your external lights into flashers (for an emergency vehicle). Right now only my tail lights and 3rd brake are being use for this flasher. Never had any issues before.

what is a speed turtle?
Well, first off, throw that "speed turtle" in the garbage where it belongs.
Report back.
If you have emergency lights, wire them in properly.

Very well could be a “self inflicted” issue with aftermarket accessories. These suffisticated computer systems do not take well to tampering with wiring in added accessories.
I checked and there are 2 speed turtles for the colorado/canyoons, depend on the year as to which one is capatable

The Speed Turtle Easy Flash Module provides a simple and effective way to flash the factory exterior lights of supported vehicles. The system is easily installed in minutes and is a true plug and play solution.

If equipped and supported, the module will flash the following lights:

  • Front Low Beams
  • Front High Beams
  • Front Turn Signals
  • Front Fog Lamps
  • Front LED Accents
  • Rear Turn Signals
  • Rear Stop Lamps
  • Third / Center Mounted Brake Lamp
  • Reverse Lamps
  • Rear LED Accents (2.0 Module Only)
  • Pickup Bed Lamp

Unlike other solutions, these modules do not require any cutting or reconfiguration of the vehicle's wiring harness. This allows the module to be easily installed by anyone in minutes. The plug and play installation also allows the module to be removed and installed in another vehicle without repairing or replacing vehicle components. The system works while parked and in motion. The module has two switch inputs as well as an existing vehicle button that can be configured to activate the module either through a long press or quick cycle.

2017 Chevy Colorado z71. I swapped out the taillight bulbs with LEDS (years back) but you need load manager resistors. I recent replaced some of those resistors d/t corrosion or faulty. Since after that, I notice the reverse lights having issues.
what I did now, process of elimination, to remove the resistors and bulbs.
No change in swapping bulbs. Reached out to my mechanic. Told him about the speed turtle flasher, he’s aware of the unit and a possibly it maybe the issue. I’ve had the unit installed for over a year with no issues. The flasher unit is hook in though the vehicle harness and is specific to year of my Colorado.

As someone who works with electronics, it is likely your "Speed Turtle" is bad.

That is what makes it a "True plug and play solution" is that it is a mini computer. You probably lost something on the circuit board that is interfering with the voltages and not playing nice now with the cars computer.

Take the device out, and I will bet you will have no issues.

Or replace the device.
You may have a bad Speed Turtle. They are very popular in response vehicle's. I have one in my Silverado HD as well as other LED flashers. Try turning off the feature in the application and see if it changes.
