Radio quit working short term

I have a 2016 Canyon SLE with the standard 8" infotainment system. Last Friday when I got in my truck to leave work the whole screen remained blank when I started the truck. When I did get the normal radio setup to display the radio wouldn't play and none of the buttons would do anything. Turned the truck off and restarted with the same results. Stopped at the post office to pick up the mail which meant the truck was off for a couple of minutes. Started it up for the final short drive home and still no radio.
Packed up the truck to leave for a weekend out of town which means the truck was off for half hour or more. When I started it up to leave on our trip the system started up as it has every day for the last three years and I haven't had the problem again since.

Now I have had a couple of times when the volume control on the dash didn't work but the steering wheel control did. This always corrected it self by shutting the truck off and restarting and like i said it has only happened maybe three times total.

Has anybody else experienced anything like this? I'm wondering if it may be a battery problem... still have the OEM battery in the truck and typically you don't get much more than three years from them and I just passed the three year mark on mine. Been looking at getting it changed out before I get stranded somewhere since they usually don't give you any clue that it's about to die they just die.

Logic will tell you it can't be the battery when it starts and runs. That should not stop a radio but I think our radios are more computer than radio. Computers are very sensitive to power. I'm pretty sure I've read on this very forum people having all kinds of strange problems because of a dying battery.

Why not just take it to a battery place (I would not recommend Autozone or whatever) and get it checked at least? Most do that for free and if they use a real load tester you will know for sure. They will check the alternator at the same time too.

A sure sign of a dying battery is you will notice after the truck sits overnight (or longer) it just doesn't crank as fast as it used to, that is the battery voltage being too low and it is dying. When you drive it, it will charge back up very quickly letting it start again until that day when it just doesn't. ;(

With all that being said it very well could be something wrong with the radio system but at least the battery is an easy thing to check.

My son in law is a Chevy tech yesterday he was telling about fixes for blank screen issues. These trucks have a lot of electronics sometimes it can be a battery going bad. Thay also have had problems with corroded connections in the dash that can be cleaned or your radio just needs to be updated. These are some common fixes that they do all the time.

And if that doesnt work, maybe I'll part with my radio. It came out of my 2016 when it was 3 days old as I updated the entire system. Not sure what its worth but Im sure we could come up with something in the middle somewhere.

:::::reminds himself to put it in the FOR SALE section one of these days:::::::::: :wink2:

Funny ****... My truck has had a ghost that has caused audio to fail in the same basic way, after a few off/ons (sometimes more than a few) it's always comes back.

Ever since I replaced my battery, I haven't had that happen.....

I never even thought of a connection, and I don't see HOW it can be connected, but your post made me scratch my head.

Experienced the same conditions when I left work yesterday. Continued to persist after several stops and restarts.
Had the local auto supply store test my battery and he said it was week, but not terribly bad.
Went ahead and had a new battery installed and so far so good... Function was restored on the first startup and again this morning. Will update this thread if that changes, but for now I'm going to believe that the radio problems were a result of my battery going bad.
A few days ago I not only lost the radio but the whole Intellilink screen, never came on at entry or start up. Tried key off/ restarting several times, nuthin'.

Drove 15 miles to work, let sit for 8 hours and the screen and radio returned on entry and start up.

No problems since, just frickin' weird.

This is what mine was doing prior to it dying. Would not come on or would randomly reboot while driving. Finally went off and didnt come back on.

The module from GM is like $250, I bought one off ebay for $75.

They BOTH have to be flashed at the dealership. Mine charged me $129 to do it even though it took a good 6 hours as it failed 3-4 times before it took (sounds like that it normal from the service guy).

Good it and you will see this is a fairly common issue with the mylink's. They use the same module in multiple vehicles (trucks, caddy's, cameros etc). Pic of the module I replaced:

How are all these batteries going bad after 2 years?

.
3+ years and about 120,000 miles on a stock battery, of course I would rather it lasted longer...
I read on a Jeep forum,(wife has a Jeep) similar failures, all heat related, to hot for the screen and controls to work, all down in the southern states
I swapped my battery out in January 2018 for an AGM as a part of my competition stereo. Best battery I have ever had! Mine was already getting weak so with the extra load on it I decided to bit the bullet and do it.

I had a couple times where the screen and/or dic went crazy (fun to see every warning light at once), but that was due to -10 through -40 temps ?

Wow thats a bit too cold for me lol!

These Mylinks are pretty crappy radios. If I wasnt using SPDIF/Toslink for my system I would yank the whole unit and put in an aftermarket Kenwood Excelon with a maestro and be done with it!

I had the same issue with my 2015 several times. First few times I pulled the fuse and put it back it and it worked fine - third time I flipped the fuse over and haven't had the issue since. It has been over a year. Never replaced the battery. now as long a Murphy and his Law don't show their head..
Still a Problem

Got in my truck this morning (almost one week after getting the battery changed) and no Mylink/radio. Tried pulling the fuse with no luck. After a couple of stops and starts the blue tooth connects and the radio comes on, but I can't change the channel or activate any of the dash controls and the only volume control that works is the one on the steering wheel.
I'm starting to wonder if something is going wrong inside the radio module itself??? I'm at wits end trying to figure this out. I'd buy myself an aftermarket radio, but from what I see you have to butcher the inside of the dash to install one, which makes it impossible to reinstall the factory setup.

Can our son in law expand on the corroded connection in the dash statement and/or what it is that could possibly need updating with the mylink/radio. From the Youtube videos that I've seen it looks like the radio is really just a module mounted inside the dash, which is connected via several quick connectors to the video screen in the dash. Does that sound about right?

Yes the module connectors can get corroded. One of the things the radio update is for is for screens blacking out. If your truck is still under drivetrain warranty the update is free.
