I found the left hand floor duct laying on the floor this morning. Is this part necessary for the system to work, or can it be left off. I hate to take it to shop just for this to be installed. I had to look up what it was, but have no idea how to put it where its suppose to be.

It probably just snaps right on. . a friction fit. Try lining it up where you can see the place it belongs and push it till it snaps into place. Or inspect and see if any clips or fasteners may be missing.
