I have had my CC Z71 EC for one month now. It has been to the shop three times and only has 550 miles on it. Within the first week, I was driving to the store, put it in park and the key would not turn all the way off(stayed in ACC position). Therefore, I could not remove the key. No matter what I tried, turning the truck on and off again, shifting gears back and forth it would not turn and the key would not come out. I took it in to the shop the next day and they ordered a new shifter for me claiming it was not shifting all the way to park and not allowing it to turn off. The battery later died that week as a result of it being in the ACC position for two days while they were fixing it. Two weeks later, it has happened again(key won't turn all the way off). I will be taking it in to the shop again on Monday and was curious if anyone else has had this problem.

Not in my Colorado, but I have experienced this in my Buick. Could be a faulty solenoid that detects by electrical signal the vehicle is in Park and to release the key. Try this: Apply the brake pedal firmly, ensure vehicle is in Park, and then push the gear shifter knob button in and out repeatedly. Listen for a click sound behind the steering column or under the gear shifter. Gently turn the ignition off and remove the key. If the key won't switch to the off position, the key can be removed by finding a small circular plastic cover beneath the ignition switch. Remove it and then stick a long thin object in, like a pen, to manually release the key. There may be a manual shifter lock release as well on the shifter console.

Edit: the owner's manual indicates this is a shift lock issue, low battery voltage issue, or Ignition Transmission Lock issue

I'm having this same problem too. How about anyone else? It would be nice to know what was found so I could pass it on to my dealer. Out of the five times it's happened, I was able to get it to my dealer only once. It released just when they got ready to take it inside. Told me no use in keeping it if it wasn't stuck. The other times, I was able to remove the key after working with it for thirty minutes. No two things seemed to let it release. We thought it was lint in the laser cut key channel the first time, but all the other times they key was perfectly clean. If there is anyone else out there with the same problem, please let us know what your dealer found out.

Thanks,

IGNITION KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED AND/OR DOES NOT ROTATE TO THE "OFF" POSITION

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

Reference Number(s): PI1429, Date of Issue: March 5, 2015

AFFECTED MODEL(S): 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon

CONDITION/CONCERN

Some customers may comment that they cannot remove the ignition key and/or that the key may not fully rotate to the "off" position (Engine does shut off).

Customers may also comment that the shift lever button appears to be already depressed.

This may be caused by the transmission control lever knob assembly not being fully seated when the vehicle was assembled, causing the shifter button to not fully engage/disengage.

RECOMMENDATION/INSTRUCTIONS

G09871372

Technicians should inspect and verify that the transmission control lever knob is fully seated and engaged and operating correctly before replacing any parts. The shifter knob button should stand out (popped out) and NOT have the appearance of being depressed or pushed in.

If the shifter assembly is properly installed and the condition still exists, refer to SI for further diagnosis.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

For vehicles repaired under the Bumper-to-Bumper coverage (Canada Base Warranty coverage), use the following labor operation. Reference the Applicable Warranties section of Investigate Vehicle History (IVH) for coverage information.

That was one of the first things I tried in the beginning. The way I finally got it to release was to shift if back and forth into and out of Drive / Park. Finally after about ten times doing that it turned loose and came out. I just saw another post from a member who disconnected his battery, and that allowed the key to release. And then another member suggested pressing the shifter button in and out and listening for a "click" from under the shifter or in the ignition area. Not quite sure which one trick has worked.

I was trying a combination of them all at once. It always seems to do it at night after dealer hours. So far I've always been able to get the key out after a thirty minute battle. Wow, this is turning into a soap opera.

I am in contact via a PM with a GM rep and will post it here when I hear back from them.

Key Problems

There are times when my 2015 Colorado will let the key go in but will not turn to start. take key out and fiddle with it a couple times( turn over opposite way) and it's ok.

Same problem with ignition lock

I have the same issue - was in the shop for 10 days awaiting parts while I was driving around a loaner vehicle, got it back yesterday - drove to Home Depot, put some lumber in the back and stopped for a hot dog with no way to get the key out again. Tried for 20 minutes, no luck, drove it to the dealer and there it sits again (with the wood in the back). I'm coming up on 2 years into the lease already, this one isn't looking like the long-term hold that my last truck was.

Anyone else still experiencing this? I noticed the thread is over a year old, but the dealer seemed baffled when I brought it back today and they couldn't get the ignition to turn off either.

At least they gave me a Silverado this time, I had anticipated 1 or 2 days in the shop before, not 10, so I kind of shot 2 weekends of projects being stuck with the small car, I needed concrete, but opted against tossing 20 bags in the little loaner Volt.

This doesn't seem like a problem that should be all that hard to fix... get rid of the stupid security stuff in favor of actually being able to turn the vehicle off? I'm not an idiot, I'm not going to leave it in drive and take the key out or whatever else they are afraid of.

Key stuck in the ignition in the "off" position

My 2015 CC did the same thing yours is doing now. The knob in the shifter head that you have to depress when shifting gears is not "popping" all the way forward when you put it in park. That knob must go all the way forward to allow the key to release from the ignition switch. Either the spring inside the head is not strong enough or the cut-outs in the head are not aligning with the shifter. You can take your finger tips and force the knob forward enough to get the key out. At least I could on mine. They replaced the entire shift lever assembly on mine, and I've not had any problems since then. It's a known problem with the Chevy folks, but not bad enough to create a recall. The new shifter assembly they installed has a much stronger spring in the shift button. It goes fully forward now when I put it in park . It seems to be only with some of the ones built on or about Feb/March of 2015. Tell the dealership what happened to mine and what the fix was. Tell them to use their finger tips to force the knob button all the way forward. Just letting it try to do it by itself will not work. That spring loaded shift knob head must go all the way forward to allow the key to be removed. If they did not replace the entire shifting lever assembly the first time, tell them to do so, unless they don't want to fix the problem. Let me know how it turns out.

This may sound a bit of "out there", but a large part of my business is commercial door locks and locks do not like dirt and 'gunk'.

This is my first experience with the laser cut keys, and in the 3 months I've had my Colorado, I've notice "gunk" piling up in the groove of the key towards the bow, and also notice some resistant in turning the key back out lately. A couple days ago I took a knife and cleaned out all the gunk that had collected in the cut of the key. The problem went away.
I won't say that is the problem here, but I do know lock cylinders are particular to key alignment in them, and the smallest fraction of misalignment can bind the key in the cylinder, and the crap collected in the key 's cut will push against alignment and cause a bind.
Also, Never use WD40 in a lock, as you are promoting dirt collection, as it will stick to the residue.

Crud in the laser cut key channel could surely cause trouble. I use and old tooth brush about once a month to clean mine out. The trouble I was having about this time last year did not come from crud in the key channel. Mine was most definitely the knob in the top of the shifter lever not going all the way forward when I shifted it into park. I eventually figured out that I could use my finger tips to push that knob all the way forward, and then the key would come out. There are contacts inside the shifter assembly that must make contact in order to let the key be removed . That knob in the shifter head must go all the way forward in order to let the key be removed. My dealer went ahead and replaced the entire shift lever assembly. I have not had any trouble with the key getting stuck since then. Before it was almost a daily event. The spring pressure in the new shifter is way more stronger which also helps to make sure it goes forward as intended. Hope everyone out there can use the info from all the posts on this subject to show to their dealer on how to go about repairing the problem. :smile2:

I wasn't really pointing my reply towards any previous post but the topic in general, sometimes an obscure thing can cause big problems.:wink2:
No reason to run to the dealer if it was only because of a dirty "ear wax " cleaner.>:)

The problem still exists. I have a 2015 Colorado purchased in December 2014 and it was fine up until a few months ago. My dealer service guy had not seen this before and thought it might be due to the front wheels not fully aligned straight. That is not it. The dealer did replace the automatic transmission shift control lever knob assembly (9/28/16). Okay for awhile but began acting up again in early October. It happens less often than before, but it is really annoying. I have to back up and pull forward a couple of times or more before the key releases. I'll take it back as the problem is still there.

Well, yesterday I pulled my 2016 Canyon (17k miles) into the driveway, shifted into park and... can't turn the key all the way over to the OFF position. After a few minutes of trying different things, I cranked it back up, put it in reverse, backed up a few feet, shifted back into park and I was able to turn the key all the way to the off position and remove it.

Hoping this was just a one time thing. Unfortunately not. Every time I stop now, I have to go through the same procedure. So frustrating. Going to call the shop this morning and schedule an appt to bring it in.

Mine did the same thing and the dealer replaced the entire shift lever assembly. Here I am a few months later and having the same issue, almost every time I drive it.
