I've got a 16' Colorado and the trim piece around the shifter and cup holders needs some touch-up. I've got some trim tools for removal, I'm wondering if it can be removed without taking the shifter apart...it looks close. I'm hoping I can get it off without tearing too much apart. Also, once it's off I plan to paint it. Any advise as far as prep? i.e.- sandpaper or scotch-brite? Maybe I'll just plaster it in stickers LOL =)

If painting plastic, use an adhesive promoter after scuffing and cleaning. The parts can also be wrapped in vinyl, as it has been done numerous times around here.

My biggest concern is whether or not I can remove the trim piece without removing the shifter...

There’s a good write up in the How to Tutorial section about replacing the shifter with the Buick Envision shifter that has good pictures of how it all comes apart, if you want to search for it, for help.
